We have lampooned the gathering of backbiting—

The ignorant have slandered us

the shunning of bores.

With the slander of parting and change

A band of fools frequented it,

An evil band I found it

for idle talk and hearsay.

For idle talk and prattle

رُبَّ من يشجيه أمري

رُبَّ من يشجيه أمري

وهو لم يخطر ببالي

وهو لم يخطر ببالي

Many a man is grieved by my affair,

Full many a one my case fires

though he has never crossed my mind.

Though it ne’er was in my thoughts

قلبه ملآن من ذَف

قلبه ملآن من ذَف

ري وقلبي منه خالِ

ري وقلبي منه خالِ

His heart is filled with the reek of me,

His heart with my bile is filled

while my heart is empty of him.

While mine of his is void
