1. Tell the sons of al-Ashtar, if you come to them:

    What befell the sons of Banu Wāsiʿ,

  2. while the lion towered over him with its fangs,

    as he lay in the dust, steeped in his deep-red blood,

  3. when they abandoned him, though he called upon them

    by ties of kinship, both close and distant?

  4. May the All-Merciful never raise your fallen man,

    nor weaken the strength of him who struck him down.

  5. One evening, the mules carried Maslama away.

    So graze, Fazāra—may the pasture bring you no joy.
