1. صاح حيّا الإله حيّا ودوراً

    عند أصل القناة من جَيرون

    The God awoke, long live the God, revolving are the ages,

    At the origin of the canal of Gerun.

  2. طال ليليَ همي وبتُّ كالمحزون

    واعترتني الهمومُ بالماطرون

    My night grew long, and I stayed sad like a mourner,

    Worries attacked me like heavy rains.

  3. عن يساري إذا دخلتُ من البا

    ب وإن كنتُ خارجاً عن يميني

    Whether I entered through the door on my left,

    Or went out through the one on my right,

  4. فلتلك آرتهنة بالشام حتى

    ظنَّ أهلي مرجّمات الظنون

    I was devoted to Damascus, so much

    That my family thought I was possessed by obsession.

  5. وهي زهراءُ مثلُ لؤلؤة الغوّا

    ميزت من جوهر مكنون

    She is as radiant as a pearl of rare essence,

    Chosen from a hidden treasure.

  6. وإذا نسيتَها لم تجدها

    في سناءٍ من المكارم دون

    When you forget her you cannot find

    In glory another of equal richness.

  7. تجعل المسكَ واليلنجوج والنَّ

    دِّ صِلاءً لها على الكانون

    She makes musk, and jasmine and jujube

    Seem like pleas for her favor in winter.

  8. ولقد قلت إذ تطاول ليلي

    وتقلبت ليلتي في فنون

    And I said, when my night grew long,

    And my night tossed in every style:

  9. ليت شعري أمن هوى طار نومي

    أم براني ربى قصير الجفون

    Would that I knew if my sleep flew for love,

    Or if my Lord deprived me, made sleep short.

  10. ثم خاصرتُها إلى القبّة الخض

    راء تمشي في مرمرٍ مسنونِ

    Then I met her at the green dome, walking

    On patterned marble with grace.

  11. قبّة من مراجلٍ ضربتها

    عند حدِّ الشتاء في قيطون

    A dome of bricks, built by her

    Where winter ends, in a fur coat.

  12. وقباب قد أُشرجت وبيوت

    نُطقُها بالرَّيحان والزرجون

    Domes adorned, houses whose dressed stones

    Speak of basil and marjoram.

  13. ثم فارقتُها على ما كا

    ن قرين مفارقاً لقرين

    Then we parted, though we had been

    Two companions, now two separated.

  14. فبكت خشية التفرَّق للب

    ين بكاءَ الحزين إثر الحزين

    She wept from fear of parting for good,

    Weeping of sorrowful after sorrowful.

  15. فاسألي عن تذكري وأطبا

    ئي لا تأبَي إذ همُ عذلوني

    Ask about my remembering, my longing,

    Do not refuse, when they accuse me.
