1. سفَرَت فهيّجنا الصباح الثاني

    وبدَت لنا فتثلّث القمران

    She traveled, so the next morning we were stirred,

    And the two moons appeared to us as three.

  2. وتكلّمت سحر الحلال كمثله

    أو خندريسٌ من دنان الحاني

    Magic of the dawn spoke to us, like it,

    Or a drinker from the cups of the wine-pourer.

  3. فبدا لنا برقٌ حكى برقَ الدجى

    وبدت لآلٍ غُصنَ في مَرجان

    So lightning that told of the lightning of darkness appeared to us,

    And for Alil a branch in the meadow appeared.

  4. خودٌ من الأعراب يقتُل جفنُها

    طرق السهام وطرفها سيّان

    A Khawlani who kills her eyelids,

    Hit by arrows and her glance is lethal.

  5. من أحسن الأتراك أضحى وجهها

    والشَعر أمسى من بني السودان

    Of the best of the Turks her face became,

    And her hair turned to that of the Sudanis.

  6. كالغصن إلا أنّ فيه شِدةً

    تهتزّني ورقٍ من العِقيان

    Like a branch, except that in it there is firmness,

    Shaking me, and leaves from the bent twigs.

  7. عبلاء خرساء الخلاخل من جوىً

    فيها فقد كتمت على الأشجان

    Dumb Blaa, her anklets of fever,

    As if she has concealed the passions.

  8. أدماء ما صلَبَت مُذَهَّبَ قرطها

    إلا لتنصر مذهب الصلبان

    Adamaa did not embolden her gilded earrings,

    Except to champion the creed of the crucifixion.

  9. ما رقّ خدّاها وأُمرِض جفنها

    إلا لِتَمتُن فتنة الشيطان

    Neither did her cheek mellow nor her eyelid sicken,

    Except to perfect the seduction of Satan.

  10. قد ستَّرت قمراً بجون غمامةٍ

    فبدا كبدرٍ لاح وسط دخان

    She veiled a moon with a cloud's abyss,

    So it appeared like a full moon amidst smoke.

  11. بدوية لم تعرفنّ تستّراً

    بل كان ذاك الستر من جرّاني

    A Bedouin woman who did not know to conceal,

    But that concealment was imposed on me.

  12. قد كان طاع القلبُ حبَّ فريدةٍ

    ونهيته عن حبِّها فعصاني

    My heart obeyed love for Farida,

    And I forbade it from loving her, but it disobeyed me.

  13. وتركت كل التُرّهات بحبها

    وقصرت مدحي في عظيم الشان

    And I neglected all reproaches for loving her,

    And restricted my praise to the Greatest of Fame.

  14. من جاءنا يدعو الأنام إلى سبي

    ل الحق والمهدي من الرحمن

    Who came to us calling people to the path,

    Of truth and the Mahdi from the Merciful.

  15. قد خصّه الرحمن بالحِكَم البهي

    ة والدليل القاطع القرآني

    The Merciful singled him out with brilliant wisdom,

    And definite proof, the Quran.

  16. فغدا مقيماً للشريعة آمراً

    بالبِرِّ والإسلام والإيمان

    So he spent the day establishing law, commanding

    Righteousness, Islam and faith.

  17. خرَّت لسطوته الملوك وأفررت

    وانشق خوفاً طاق ذي الأيدان

    Kings bowed to his authority and knights scattered,

    The arch of He With the Many Hands split in fear.

  18. وتساقطت أركانه وتزعزعت

    أركانه واهتزّ كالنشوان

    And his pillars were made to shake and crumble,

    His pillars were shaken as if they were plant shoots.

  19. قرمٌ مقيم الدين بالمسنان

    ليثٌ مدمِّر دولة الأوثان

    A Karami maintaining religion with his blade.

    A lion destroying the state of idols.

  20. في فتيةٍ بذل النفوس يسرّهم

    في عزّ دين اللَه ذي الأركان

    Amongst youths who freely gave their souls,

    To elevate the religion of God, the pillar.

  21. قومٌ إذا اغبرَ السماء رأيتهم

    تركوا فلاناً غائثاً بفلان

    A people, when the sky clouded, you would see them

    Leaving So-and-so to come to the aid of So-and-so.

  22. لا يرعون عن العدى كي يلبسوا ال

    غبراء من حُلل النجيع القاني

    They do not refrain from injustice in order to wear

    The dust-laden garments of the fine Naji.

  23. سل عنهم في بدر بل في خندق

    كم جندلوا من أشجع الفرسان

    Ask about them at Badr, no, ask about them at Khandaq,

    How many stalwart horsemen they finished off.

  24. سل عن أبي جهلٍ ببدر إذا بدا

    بين الصفوف يجول في الميدان

    Ask about Abu Jahl at Badr when he came out

    Amongst the ranks roaming about on the battlefield.

  25. أين الشجاعة منه إذ أُلقي على ال

    ومضاء مطروحاً من الشبان

    Where was his courage when he was thrown

    Onto the glowing embers, discarded by the youths.

  26. شبّانهم ترمي الكهول من العدى

    وكهولهم ضرباً بكل يماني

    Their youths shoot the elders with injustice,

    And their elders strike with both hands.

  27. من جُبِّهم ناران تبدو للقرى

    نار الحديد ونار فوق رعان

    From their bosoms fires appear to the towns—

    The fire of iron and fire above meadows.

  28. نالوا السيادة والعلاء بصحبة ال

    طهر الزكيّ المنجب العدناني

    They attained sovereignty and supremacy in the company of

    The Chaste Zaki, the Auspicious Adnani

  29. من فاق كل الأنبياء وآدماً

    فضلاً كذا الكرسي مع الرضوان

    Who surpassed all prophets including Adam

    In virtue—thus did the Throne and Contentment.

  30. بل تربة المختار خير من ذرى ال

    عرش الرفيع وخير كل جنان

    Nay, the soil of the Chosen One is better than the

    Lofty Throne’s sphere—and better than any paradise.

  31. يا أيها الشفّاع إني مذنب

    أرجوك يوم الهول لا تنساني

    O Greatest Intercessor I am a sinner,

    I hope on the Momentous Day you do not forget me.

  32. بل واسقني يا كوثراً من كوثر

    يوم الرجوع بحشرجٍ ملآن

    Nay, and quench my thirst on the Day of Return

    With a filled cup, from Al-Kawthar.

  33. فلأنت لا ترضى لنا بمذلّة

    ولأنت لا ترضى لنا بهوان

    For you do not accept humiliation for us,

    Nor do you accept disgrace for us.

  34. ترضى يا كريم وإننا

    في شدة من زفرة النيران

    You accept, O Bountiful One, even if we

    Are in dire straits from Hellfire’s blaze.

  35. ثم الصلاة عليك يا علم الهدى

    وكذا السلام كوابلٍ هتان

    Then blessings upon you, O Guide to Righteousness,

    And likewise peace in profuse bundles.

  36. والآل والأصحاب أهل الخير

    والتقوى وأهل البر والإحسان

    And to the Family and the Companions—the people of virtue,

    Godliness, righteousness and beneficence.
