1. عَجِبتُ لذي طرفٍ فُتِنتُ بسحره

    ووجه يفوق البَدر ليلة نصفه

    I marvel at one whose glance has bewitched me with its magic;

    And whose face surpasses the full moon on the midmonth night;

  2. وصدغٍ لدى هجرانه كعقاربٍ

    وعند وصال الصبّ واوات عطفه

    In his estrangement, his twin temple-locks are like scorpions;

    But in union with the beloved, they are the wāws of his tenderness.
