    O men of God—succor and rescue

    for one who is drowning in a sea of hardships!

    O men of God, stand by a band

    who long ago joined together to uphold God’s faith.

    O men of God, stand by brothers

    who vied with one another in every kindness toward their father.

    فلَبُّوه لمّا أن دعا وتسابقوا

    Their father called them to noble virtues and piety;

    when he called, they answered him and raced one another.

    You know their suffering and the calamity that befell them,

    for an arrow shot by Time has struck them.

    ينادون إن من صوبكم لاح بارق

    All of them look in hope to none but you;

    they cry, “Indeed, from your quarter a flash of lightning has gleamed.”

    Their intimates: a talebearer, a hater, an envier—

    a dissembler, a backbiter, and a dull-witted hypocrite.

    So be a shield for al-Suwaydi’s children,

    that through you each oncoming calamity may be turned from them.

    Swiftly, swiftly—come to our aid with support,

    that the haters may see plainly that we are deserving.

    For you are a fortress shielding this whole world from destruction,

    and for these people, what excellent bonds you are!
