1. أبعد الخمس فوق الأربعينِ

    أروم مع المشيب وِصال عينِ

    After fifty five years

    I wish to reunite with my beloved's eyes

  2. ألا يا جارةً بالسفح باتت

    تعلِّل مَن تصافي علِّليني

    Alas! My neighbor at the foot of the hill

    Blames the one who makes peace, blame me

  3. ذِهابَ الأمن عن قلبٍ جبانٍ

    لقد ذهب الرقاد عن الجفون

    When fear leaves the heart of a coward

    Sleep has certainly left the eyes

  4. وقد أفنيت مبيضَّ الأماني

    ومُسِّودُّ الدجى أبداً قريني

    And I have wasted the blossoms of wishes

    The dark night is always my companion

  5. فهل للصبح من خيرٍ يرجّى

    ليكسر سَورَةَ الوجدِ الكمينِ

    Is there any good in the dawn that is hoped for?

    To break the form of anguish lying in wait

  6. كأنّ الليل مهرٌ ذو حران

    بفارسه لدى حروب زبون

    As if the night were a bridled steed

    With its rider at the battles of misfortune

  7. يكرر ركله فيزيد قمصاً

    ويزجره فيأخذ بالسكون

    Repeating its kick to further wound

    And it neighs so he takes to calm

  8. أنجلاء العيون إليك إني

    شُغِفت بحبّ فاترة العيون

    O bright-eyed maidens! I confess

    I am infatuated with the languid-eyed one

  9. وأهلك يا ابنة الأعراب إني

    ببنت الترك قد أضحى جنوني

    And your people, O daughter of nomads, I

    Have become crazy for the Turkish girl

  10. وأعجَمتُ اللسان فظَلت ألهو

    لحبِّيها بلقلقة الرَّطين

    I lisped so I began to indulge

    In my love for her with murmuring clay

  11. فلولا الوشيُ كانت مثل ظبي

    ولولا الحِلي كانت كالرُّدَيني

    If not for the birthmark, she would be like a gazelle

    And if not for the moles, she would be like a willow

  12. فيا خلخالها المثري لماذا

    خرستَ فلست تفصح بالرنين

    So why, her arousing anklet, have you

    Fallen silent and do not murmur?

  13. أكان هواك مثل هواي حتى

    سئمتَ هوى مسامرة الخَدين

    Was your passion like mine until

    You wearied of the whispers of cheeks?

  14. أسيرة حِجلها هل من مجير

    لمأسور القراطق والبرين

    O captive of the shackles, is there a protector

    For the prisoner of chains and open desert?

  15. ألا سُقياً لعصر كنت ألهو

    به بظباء وحِرة والحجون

    Alas! For a spring I used to indulge

    In it with gazelles, hares and ostriches

  16. حُبالَتِيَ الشباب وحسن حالي

    عريشي والنِجار غدا وجيني

    My youthful spirit and good state

    My home and carpenter are now gone from me

  17. فليت سنيه صوتٌ مستعادٌ

    وهل رجعي وقد نفدت سنوني

    If only his voice sounded recalling

    My years though my years are gone

  18. أوَدّ مديحَه فتصد عنه

    مذمّاتٌ لذا الدهر الخؤون

    I wish for his praise but detractors

    Forbid it, in these grim times

  19. وليته رجاله ابصرن شاني

    فأفرغ في نواديهم شؤوني

    If only its men saw my condition

    And poured out my worries in their gatherings

  20. ألا يا جيرةً سكنوا بكرخ

    علامَ مع الدعاة تركتموني

    Alas! O neighbors living in Karakh

    Why have you abandoned me to the missionaries?

  21. جفاني بعد بُعدِكُمُ لئامٌ

    فلو كانوا كراماً ما جَفَوني

    After your distance, rascals estranged me

    If they were honorable, they would not have abandoned me

  22. ومشّاءٌ ومغتابٌ وقال

    وذو حسد أقيه ويتّقيني

    And tale-bearers and backbiters said

    I fear and avoid their envy of me

  23. وإن أقاد في هجروا محلّي

    وحبل الوصل قد قطعوه دوني

    If they visit without me in my home

    They have cut off the cord of connection from me

  24. وأعفو عنهم كَرَماً وحِلماً

    وخوفاً أن اراكم تعتبوني

    Yet I pardon them out of nobility and forbearance

    And for fear that you would blame me if you saw them

  25. همُ قومي وإن والَوا عدوّي

    وهم حِزبي وإن لم ينصروني

    They are my people though they have made me their enemy

    They are my party though they do not support me

  26. فليس براجنٍ فينا اختلاف

    وإن كان الوفاق مع الرجين

    There is no joy in conflict between us

    Though concord is with the disdainful

  27. وماذا تنكر الأعداء مني

    ومجدي حلَّ فوق الفرقدَين

    What do enemies deny of me?

    My glory has settled atop the two noble hills

  28. وماذا تزدري الشعراء مني

    وقد جاوزتُ حد الأربعين

    What do the poets think little of me?

    For I have surpassed the age of forty

  29. بُليت بذا الزمان بكل فدمٍ

    يجاذبني المفاخر وهو دوني

    I have suffered in this time with every blood-price

    Pride and glory toss me about, though below me

  30. وَعَلق لم يزل لهجاً بذامي

    بلا حسبٍ ولا نسبٍ مبين

    An ignorant fool who has never ceased to slander me

    With no dignity or known lineage

  31. يُبيحُك منه عرضاً لم يصُنه

    ويرتع منك في عرضٍ مصون

    You are permitted by him to a violation he did not protect

    And he roams your inviolable honor

  32. فيامن قصدهم ثلبي ونقصي

    وجلّ مرادهم أن لا يروني

    So you who intend my ruin and disgrace

    And whose sole purpose is not to see me

  33. أنا النور الذي بسناه سرتم

    إلى العلياء من دنياً ودين

    I am the light by whose rising you walked

    To the heights from the worldly and the religious

  34. أنا الحامي الذمار فإن جهلتم

    سوابق شيمتي فستعلموني

    I am the protector if you are ignorant

    Of the precedents of my nature, you will come to know me

  35. أنا ابن جلا وطلاّع الثنايا

    متى أضعَ العمامة تعرفوني

    I am the son of glory and the rising of the stars

    When I don the turban, you will recognize me

  36. ألا يا راكباً يفري الفيافي

    ويخترق السهول مع الحزون

    Alas! O rider who spurs his mare

    And traverses the plains with the mourning beasts

  37. إذا جاوزت وجرة عن شمال ال

    كثيب بجهلة الوادي اليمين

    If you pass the left side dune north of

    A hill in the valley of ignorance, to the right

  38. وجزت على الموارد ثَمَّ فانشد

    فؤاداً قد أراقته جفوني

    And stop by the water-holes, then let loose

    A heart its eyelids have spilled over

  39. وخبِّر جيرتي أني على ما

    مضى من حفظ عهدهم المتين

    And inform my neighbor that I

    Still keep the promise I made to them

  40. فحفظي عهدهم طبعي كما قد

    جعلتُ ولاء عبد الله ديني

    For keeping their promise is my nature

    I have made the loyalty of Abdullah my faith

  41. إمامٌ فاضلٌ بحرٌ خِضمٌ

    همامٌ فاصلٌ ليث العرين

    A noble imam, a deep ocean

    Lofty of purpose, fierce lion of the thickets

  42. أخو هِمم تريه كلّ صعب

    من الأخطار ذا سهل ولين

    The brother of determination, whom you see

    Deem every danger easy, of smooth and gentle manner

  43. وآراء تكاد تضيء حتى

    لتغني عن سناء النيّرين

    Whose opinions almost shine until

    They suffice instead of the radiance of lamps

  44. وفكر ثاقب في كل شيء

    يصيب الأمر فيه قبل حين

    A penetrating intellect in all matters

    Hits the point before its time

  45. يدبّر فيه ما أعيا ألوفاً

    وينتج فيه كلّ هدىً مبين

    He deliberates what would weary thousands

    And produces every clear guidance

  46. يخوض بذهنه بحر المعاني

    فلم يُخرج سوى عِقدٍ ثمين

    He plunges into the sea of meanings with his mind

    And brings out nothing but precious pearls

  47. ويسبي المشكلات ولا يحاشي

    فيلبسها ثياب المستكين

    He captures complex issues and does not avoid

    Dressing them in the garb of the commoner

  48. له هممٌ أجلُّ من الرواسي

    له شيَمٌ مع الخُلق الحَسِين

    He has ambitions greater than foundations

    He has a nature of the finest character

  49. طهورٌ كان من ماء طهور

    وكان الغير من ماء مهين

    A purity that was of purified water

    While others were of tainted water

  50. هو ابن الأنبياء هو ابن طه

    هو ابن الأصفياء ابن الحُسَين

    He is the son of prophets, the son of Taha

    He is the son of the pious, the son of Hussein

  51. فيا ابن محمد والمجد رزقٌ

    وقاكَ اللَه أن تردى بعَين

    O son of Muhammad! Glory is sustenance

    And God has protected you from falling with the eye

  52. فأنت على سنام المجد مولىً

    تفوق بذي المفاخر كل عين

    You are the master of the summit of glory

    Surpassing the glorious in every eye's view

  53. ووصفك بالجميل بكلّ دو

    له ذكر وفي سين وعين

    To describe you as beautiful, every abode

    Has a mention, in seen and in eye

  54. وفي قطر العراق وكل قطر

    وفي أم الطماخ ورأس عين

    In Iraq and every abode

    And in Mother of Vegetation and Head of the Eye

  55. فأنت بعصرنا لا سيّما في

    حمى الزوراء أفضل كل عين

    You are, in our time, especially in

    The sanctuary of Zawra, the best of every eye

  56. أود أزور ناديكم لأني

    أُسَرُّ إذا رأيتكم بعيني

    I wish to visit your club, for I

    Am happiest when I see you with my eyes

  57. قدمتَ وأهل منزلكم بخيرٍ

    فإنهم كرام خيرُ عين

    You have arrived, and the people of your home well,

    For they are generous, the best of eyes

  58. جرى إحسانكم في كل روح

    توالي من يواليكم كعين

    Your benevolence flows in every soul

    That befriends you as the eye flows

  59. ونالت عين من يشنا عُلاكم

    ويكرهكم بنادقُ كل عين

    And the eye of whoever opposes your elevation

    And hates you has been struck by all eyes

  60. سبقتم حاتم الطائيّ لمّا

    وصلتم كلَّ مستجدٍ بعين

    You have surpassed Hatim al-Ta'i when

    You connected with every newcomer with an eye

  61. فلو أن الخليل رآك قبلاً

    لجلّك حاقراً لكتاب عين

    If the Friend had seen you before

    He would have deemed his Book of the Eye worthless

  62. وكل جماعة والتلك صارت

    ولو كانوا زعانف خير عين

    And every group that befriended you

    Even if they were the pupils of the best eye

  63. تجود بما تراه ولو نفيساً

    وتمنح من تريد بكل عين

    You are generous with what you see valuable even if it is precious

    And you grant whom you wish with every eye
