1. حَنانَيكَ أنَّ الشيءَ بالشيء يُذكر

    فلا تعجبي يا هنذ إذ صرتُ أضجر

    Your affection, that a thing is remembered through its association

    So do not wonder, O fair one, that I have become sad

  2. رايت على العشّار بنتاً صغيرة

    كزمزم بنتي وجهها متغيّر

    I saw at Al-‘Ashshār’s a little girl

    Like my Zamzam, her face changed

  3. فلما رأتني مقبلاً فوق حجرتي

    بعِمَّتي الكبرى غدَت تتعثّر

    So when she saw me coming over my room

    With my advanced age, she started to stumble

  4. من الخوف مني وهي في القلب حبّها

    كرامة من في القلب لا زال يُذكر

    Out of fear of me yet in her heart was her love

    A gracious one whose heart cannot forget

  5. فهاج غرام القلب غبّ سكونه

    وسالت من العينين للوجه أبحر

    So the heart’s passion was provoked, disturbs its calm

    And rivers streamed from the eyes to the face

  6. أزمزمُ إني ما نسيتُك ساعةً

    من الدهر هل إني بقلبك أخطر

    Zamzam, I have not forgotten you an hour

    Of time, am I of concern to your heart?

  7. أزمزم إن قد كنت أنت نسيتني

    لِلَهو فإني بالجَفا لك أذكر

    Zamzam, if you have forgotten me

    For play, then I will remember your aloofness

  8. أزمزم إن أبصرت كل عشيرتي

    فإني أبوهم لست أنسى وأحقر

    Zamzam, if I saw all my tribe

    I am their father, I do not forget and belittle

  9. وإن كان لعبُ الدرب أنساك والداً

    فإني لا أنسى وإن كنت أُقبَر

    If the play of fate made you forget your father

    I do not forget even if I am buried

  10. أأنسى بُكاك إذ خرجتِ عشيةً

    عليَ وهذا الذِّكر للقلب يفطر

    Would I forget your weeping when you left one evening

    Over me? This memory splits the heart

  11. كلانا سنسلو غير أنك خِلقةً

    لك الضعف لا يأتيك منه تكدّر

    We will both pass away, but you are vulnerable

    Weakness comes not to you, to trouble you

  12. وإني من شوقي إليك وحرقتي

    غدوتُ ضئيلاً ربما لست أُبصَر

    And from my passion and burning for you

    I have become frail, maybe invisible

  13. نسيتِ قروش الروم كيف أذبّها

    عليك ولا خرجاً عليك أقتّر

    You forgot the Roman coins, how I sought

    Them for you, nor was miserly toward you

  14. وفي كل يوم ربع رومي تناله

    يداك وللرقّيِّ أشري وأكسر

    Each day you got a Roman quarter

    Your hands breaking and buying your freedom

  15. أروح بحرٍّ كنت تدرين ضُرّه

    وآتيك بالرقيّ ولا أتكبّر

    I traveled dangerous seas you knew

    Bringing your emancipation, not boasting

  16. فيا بنت قلبي ليس ذلك منَّةً

    عليك ولكنّي بهذا أُذكِّر

    My heart’s daughter, that was no favor

    Upon you, but to remind you I did

  17. فلم لا بقيتِ يا ابنة الروح عندنا

    طعامك ممزوج حليبٌ وسُكّرُ

    Why didn’t you stay, daughter of the soul, with us?

    Your food mixed with milk and sugar

  18. وعندي من الهيل الذي عزّ وقعه

    من الحمّص الكرديّ في الحجم أكبر

    I have the hilal wheat, mighty is its dough

    Syrian burghul, bigger in volume

  19. وعندي يا بنتي كثير قرنفلٍ

    وعندي نبات ليس في مصر يُذكر

    And I have, my daughter, much clove

    And plants not found in Egypt, memorable

  20. وعندي حلاواتٌ عجيب صنيعها

    وعندي طاقاتٌ من الهند تؤثر

    And I have wondrous sweetmeats

    And I have fabrics from India preferred

  21. وكل الذي قد مرّ مدّخر لك

    إذا جئت آتيك بذاك وأكثر

    All that has passed is stored for you

    If you come, I will bring that and more

  22. ولا تعط منه عائشاً حبّ خردلٍ

    ولا آمناً والكل عندك يُحصَر

    Do not give ‘Ā’isha a grain of mustard

    Or safety, all is reserved with you
