ولي طيرٌ أُمَرّنه زماناً
على صيد الظباء من الصباح
I had a bird I'd trained for years
To hunt gazelles at dawn's first light,
رأى شبحاً ففرّ إليه لمّا
رأى جِيداً تلألأ في وشاح
But when he saw a specter loom
His wings flashed toward it swift in flight,
مظنّة أنه ظبيٌ وهذا
يصيد الأُسدَ بالحدَقِ الصحاح
Thinking the ghost a grazing deer
Whose neck the lion soon would smite.
