My two friends, if you go to the land of Baghdad
And see those schools and clubs,
And find my loved ones, convey
The greetings of a loving, yearning wanderer,
And tell them that the lover is suffering
And misfortunes have shackled him in chains.
He remembers you all the time and repeats your name
Whenever longing moves him and stirs him to passion.
God did not allow me to enjoy your company
And passion for you is all the water and food I need.
How can I be patient without you when the agony of love
Has set my heart aflame?
I would sacrifice my soul for a moon among you
That when I remember saddens me like predators.
O people of Badr, help me and double
Your efforts, do not abandon me in estrangement and exile.
For intentions are bitter in taste, but you
Are the sweetness of meeting, you I hold dearer than scent.
Memories kill me and hope brings me back to life
And between them my heart is torn to shreds.
How much anguish took hold of my heart in Karbala
And laughed at it like the fangs of lions!
The greatest of which was losing my beloved, and the glory
Of never meeting again, despite the envy of my detractors.
