عَدِمتُكَ مِن بَعلٍ تُطيلُ أَذاتي
O husband of Layla, how often—how often, through the pain you cause her—
damn you as a husband!—you prolong my own anguish.
بِنَفسي حَبيبٌ حالَ بابُكَ دونَهُ
تَقَطَّعُ نَفسي إِثرَهُ حَسَراتي
My life be ransom for the beloved whom your door has barred;
my soul is torn apart in his wake with all my bitter regrets.
