1. قلتُ لمّا أن شبَّهوكَ وقاسوا

    وأتَوا فيكَ بالقياسِ القَريبِ

    When they compared you and judged closely,

    and made analogies about you,

  2. ركبَ البحرَ جعفرٌ فاقتَضى الرا

    كبُ أن لا يقاسَ بالمركوبِ

    Ja'far rode the sea, so the rider deserved

    not to be analogized with the ridden.

  3. وإذا ما تَساجل الماء والما

    ءُ افتخاراً فالفضلُ للمشروبِ

    And if water and water ever vied

    proudly, the merit's with the drunk.

  4. وعلى ذكر ذا وذاك فلِلجا

    لبِ عندي شكرٌ على المجلوبِ

    So for the sake of this and that, my thanks

    to the bringer for the gift he brought!
