1. Bear patiently what Time has done,

and what it has wrought, Abu al-Hasan.

  2. For so often you made it serve you

    amid death-dealing and beneficence.

  3. And through it you pursued every kind

of noble deed and lofty attainment.

  4. And you kept diverting Time’s vicissitudes

from us, leaving it humbled and abased.

  5. So if it should visit you with a misstep,

    overlook it—and know for certain

  6. that the nights have been forbidden

to settle into any fixed state.

  7. Especially since what has passed is not

    brought back by prolonged sorrow.
