My sorrow increases, though you have no more to offer

Act unjustly, for neither fairness nor foul play console me

Nor does my heart find peace in ceaseless union

Or separation leading to distraction and discord

With one you punished into obedience, or another left free in desire

Tell me which of the two you decreed should slay me?

How many a glance like an unsheathed blade

Disdaining to be burnished, careless of its shine

With power over spilling blood, so casually they watch

While my eyes, beyond their gaze, betray my deeds

The blossom of a cheek no tears could water

Yet sorrow’s bloom is the brightest in that place

The darkness of the mole amid the cheek leaves

Black as the hearts of lovers, beyond console

When we were alone, he revealed the reason in desire

His nature refused to linger, insisting on my blame

Leave love to ruin my heart as it pleases

Its dwelling crumbles and its clothes wear thin

She, for whose love you struggle and vie

Leave her be, and take the rugged path to the plain

For these days do not leave us

To live, even briefly, without disgrace and humiliation

Consider my eyes dispassionately, can you envision

Any merit but what Abu Al-Fadl has seen?

Word came to you, I am among a people

Wavering between refusal and return to my abode

As if the nights, oh Abu Al-Fadl, have destined

Their most generous one to forgo all generosity toward me

The most liberal among them is he who spared no expense

Of himself, though nothing else is worthy of expense
