1. حبلُ الهَوى ملقىً على الغارِب

    فما لها ترقِلُ بالراكبِ

    The rope of passion lies discarded on the ground

    Yet she continues restless with the rider

  2. وأنتَ لا تنفك في إثرها

    تحدو بحثِّ المَدمع الساكبِ

    While you tirelessly pursue their trail

    Urged on by the tears of the weeping eye

  3. وراءَك ارجِع إنَّ خيلَ الهوى

    لا تلحقُ المسلوبَ بالسالبِ

    Turn back, for the steeds of passion

    Will never catch up with the robber and the robbed

  4. ويا مدير اللحظات التي

    توجب أن أتركَ من واجبي

    O director of the moments that oblige me

    To neglect my duties

  5. أوصيكَ خيراً بالسقام الذي

    فيهنَّ واعلم أنه صاحبي

    I advise you kindly of the malady

    That afflicts them, and know it is my companion

  6. وقَرقَفٍ في مقلَتي أهيفٍ

    عذراءَ لا تُمنعُ من خاطبِ

    A timid doe in my eyelids, a graceful maiden

    Denied to her suitor

  7. حلّت ولَكن حرَّموا أختها

    من ريقةٍ تُجلى على الشاربِ

    She arrived but they forbade her sister

    A sip that would shine on the drinker's lip

  8. وعللّوني بالذي عندَهم

    كمُستتابٍ ليسَ بالتائبِ

    They reproached me for what they possess

    Like one pressured to repent but not remorseful

  9. جاؤا بدنٍّ زعموا أنَّه

    من آدمٍ من طينِه اللازبِ

    They brought a religion they claimed

    Came from an Adam made of clinging clay

  10. قلت احبِسوا عن شيخكم سَيحَكم

    فليس ماضي العمر بالآيبِ

    I said, "Detain your Shaykh, for the days of my life

    Are not those of one who returns"

  11. وجرَّ قولي أنَّني تائبٌ

    منها حديث ابنَي أبي التائبِ

    And my saying I had repented

    Brought, from the two sons of Abi al-Taib

  12. المانعَين الواهبَين انظروا

    هل يوصفُ المانع بالواهبِ

    The withholders, the granters - see

    Can the withholder be called the granter?

  13. مالاهما جنَّة عرضَيهما

    قد يُحرَسُ المخزونُ بالسائبِ

    They have no Paradise, their two widths

    That may be guarded by one who roams around

  14. كلٌّ عليٌّ في بناءِ العُلى

    إذا انتَهى في نسبٍ عازبِ

    Each a lofty Ali in lineage

    When ending in a proud, unattached lineage

  15. فخلِّه فيما تَرى أنَّه

    صعبُ المساعي خَشِن الجانبِ

    So leave him to what you see as

    Arduous, rough-edged

  16. إلى الملبَّى والمسمّى به

    بردِّه معروفَه الناسبِ

    To the wished-for one, called by it

    Known by its coldness, suitable

  17. كم كذّبا من حذرٍ صادقٍ

    وصدَّقا من أملٍ كاذبِ

    How they lied about many a truthful warning

    And believed many a false hope

  18. وكلّ من يُجدي على قائِل

    فإنما يُملي على كاتبِ

    And each who profits by speaking

    Merely dictates to a scribe

  19. كلاهُما في فِعله كاسِب

    والفضلُ ما يَبقى على الكاسبِ

    Both profit by their deed

    But virtue belongs only to the doer
