1. Leave the nights alone—for lofty deeds

have a judgment that overrules their tyranny.

  2. As though they had never seen ʿAlī,

in whose hand lie sorrow and joy:

  3. from deaths to bounties

runs the repeated sweep and course of his two hands.

  4. If for an hour they pursue a purpose

    firmly settled, affairs miscarry.

  5. Among the brown-shafted spears he has, when darkens

the night of battle’s dust, a nocturnal companion.

  6. In his palms, the short one among them lengthens

toward the throats of the foe.

  7. What do you think awaits one whom you see

the ages have so greatly shunned?

  8. They have made him drunk while still hungover,

and after their blows they wheel back again.

  9. And you are indeed the finest refuge from them:

you defend even when the protector yields.

  10. Are you content that a turn of fate should befall him

when you have power to turn it away?

  11. His eye never stole a moment’s sleep

without Tyre ushering him into it.

  12. As though his longing were a wing

on which he flies to her land.

  13. Clasped by it, he has alighted and remains,

    awaiting what the prince commands.
