1. حكمُ الهوى جرَّ عليك الجَرة

    فاتَّفق المَقدورُ والمَقدرَه

    The decree of passion inflicted hardship upon you

    So fate and destiny coincided

  2. في شادنٍ خمرةُ أجفانِه

    تجتمعُ الناسُ لها دَسكَرَه

    In the intoxication of his eyelids is a wine

    That people gather for in throngs

  3. يُستعظمُ الأصغرُ من عطفِه

    فإن شكَوتَ الأعظَم استَصغرَه

    The least of his kindness seems great

    If you complain of the greater, he makes light of it

  4. لو كان طولُ الدهرِ يُنسي كما

    قيلَ إذاً ما خِفتُ أن أذكرَه

    If the passage of time caused forgetting, as is said

    Then I wouldn't fear remembering him

  5. وخبروني أنَّ طَيفاً سَرى

    لغَيرهم عِند الذي أبصَرَه

    And they told me that an apparition passed by

    To others, by the one who saw it

  6. فقلتُ لو نمتُ لحدَّثتُكُم

    ما تشهدُ العينُ بما لَم تَرَه

    So I said, if I slept, I would tell you

    What the eye witnesses but hasn't seen

  7. وكم تَباكَينا وما يَستَوي

    هل تَلحقُ الكحلاءَ ذاتُ المرَه

    How we cried and cried, but are they equal

    Can kohl-lined eyes match those with kuhl?

  8. ولا علمنا أبداً أعين

    فاض علينا أم ندى حيدَرَه

    We never knew if our eyes

    Overflowed or if it was the dew of Haidar

  9. شدَّ العَطايا بالسَّجايا فما

    حال بِه دَهرٌ ولا غيَّرَه

    He tied gifts with poems, so neither

    Time nor change altered them

  10. من المَعالي الطائِعات التي

    تَعجزُ عنها الألسُن المخبرَه

    Of the compliant glories that

    Eloquent tongues fall short of expressing

  11. يقطعُها جودُ بنيهِ ولا

    تقطعُها الكَوماءُ ذاتُ البرَه

    The generosity of his sons cuts them short, not

    The bare hillsides

  12. يسيرُ تيهاً وابنهُ وهو من

    بعدِهما تيهاءَ مُستوعرَه

    He walks lost, and after him his son

    Then lost wanderings in the wilderness

  13. لا تنكِروها شيَماً حُلوةً

    من مرَّةٍ لَيسَت بمستَنكرَه

    Do not deny it is a sweet nature

    Not one to be rejected

  14. كلُّ امرئٍ منهم أبوهُم إذا

    جاد فإن جاد فما أجدرَه

    Each man of them, when his father is generous

    How worthy he is of generosity!

  15. أحسنتَ بل أحسَنَ في الظنِّ مَن

    ظنَّ بكَ الإحسانَ فاستَشعرَه

    You have done well, or rather the one who expected

    Goodness from you sensed it and perfumed it
