وكنتُ أرَى تَصاريفَ الليالي

مفرَّقةً على شرفِ اجتِماعِ

I used to see the passing of nights

Scattered on the brink of gathering

فلَم يَخطُر على بالي كأنِّي

إذا ما شِئتُ كنتُ عَلى امتِناعِ

It did not occur to me that if I wished

I would be capable of abstaining

فلما أن تَداعَت للتَّداني

فأسرعتِ التداني بالتَّداعي

But when they came close for intimacy

And you hastened the intimacy in response

رَجعتُ كأنَّ أمراً مُستَطاعا

أحاولُه وليسَ بِمُستَطاعِ

I felt as if it were an achievable matter

I attempt but cannot achieve

إلى أن قيل ألا كانَ ألقَى

حديثَ الحادثاتِ إلى سِباعِ

Until it was said, would it not be better

To tell the tale of events to the lions

جزاكَ اللَّهُ قائِلَها بخَيرٍ

تولَّد بينَ قَولكَ واستِماعي

May God reward well the speaker

Your words gave birth between us

فما أيقظتَ ذا الوَسنان إلا

إلى مُتَيقِّظٍ رَحب الذراعِ

You did not wake this sleepy one

Except to one wide awake and keen

وأنَّ ابنَ الحُسينِ غداةَ يَسعى

إلى أمرٍ لمحمود المَساعي

That the son of Hussein the next morning

Strove for a most praiseworthy effort

شمائِلهُ بما اشتَملَت عَليه

إلى ما في أنامِلهِ دَواعي

His features encompassing what they contained

To what incentives lie in his fingers
