  1. إنَّ ابنَ مَعدانَ وإن لَم يَدَع

    في الجودِ مَجهوداً ولا وُسعا

    Though the son of Ma'dan does not profess

    Generosity or capacity unstressed,

  2. فيما تَراهُ أنَّه واقِفٌ

    وهو مُجِدٌّ ذاهِبٌ يَسعَى

    You see him pause before the next excess,

    Glorious in onward motion without rest,

  3. يَلتَقِطُ الأَخبارَ عَن كلِّ ما

    يُطلَبُ في الناسِ ويُستَدعى

    Gleaning news of all that men request,

    Or summon to a hasty interest,

  4. ويَبتَديهم مُستَنيراً بِه

    مكانَ ما يَستَرق السَّمعا

    Lighting them clearly onward to the best,

    Where hearing falls short of full attest.
