أطلعني الحبُّ على غَيبه

فصرتُ أدري اليوم ما في غدِ

Love revealed its secrets to me

So now I know what tomorrow holds

واللَّهِ ما عُورضتُ في مُهجَتي

إِلا لأن أرفَع عَنها يَدي

By God, I was not attacked in my resolve

Except to lift my hand from it

للأهيَف الأغيَد والنَّفسُ ما

آلفَها للأهيفِ الأغيَدِ

For the most noble and pure soul is not

Used to the most noble and pure

يُعجبُها أن تَرتَدي حُسنَه

والحسنُ قَد يَردَى به المُرتَدي

It pleases her to don beauty

Yet beauty can be spoiled by the wearer

طُوفانُ نُوحٍ طبَّقَ الأرضَ لا

يَبرحُ منها آخرَ المُسنَدِ

Noah's deluge engulfed the earth without

Leaving the last pillar

طافَ عَلينا فاستَوَينا على آل

جُوديِّ مِن جُودِ أبي أحمدِ

It washed over us and we relied on the lineage

Of my generous father Ahmad

أبُو العُلى إن ذكرت وابنها

يا ذا المكانَينِ مِن السُّؤدُدِ

Abu Al Ala, if I mention you and her

O you of the two lofty places

غيَّر مِن حالي ومِن نِيَّتي

في غَيرِهِ كَم مُصلحٍ مُفسِدِ

It changes my state and intention

How many reformers corrupt in others

لَو كانَ من أحبَبتُه بعضَ ما

في يدِهِ زارَ بلا مَوعِدِ

If he I loved had some of what

Was in his hand, he would visit without appointment
