  1. أرأيتَ ما صنع القريبُ النائي

    أيامَ أغرب في حديث بُكائي

    Have you seen what the distant relative has done

    In the days I complained bitterly of estrangement?

  2. متساقط العبراتِ كالجمراتِ من

    حَولي فواعَجبي لجمرِ الماءِ

    My falling tears like embers around me

    And my wonder at the embers of water.

  3. وأَظلُّ أعترضُ الرياح تنسماً

    فأعالجُ الأهواءَ بالأهواءِ

    And I remain intercepting the winds breeze

    So I contend with the winds using winds.

  4. ومهفهفٍ صحت على طول الضنا

    أجفانُه فدواؤها من دائي

    With drooping eyelids he shouted the length of reproach

    Its cure is through my malady.

  5. إِن نختلِط فقد اختلَفنا فانظروا

    فالخلفُ داعي فرقة الخلطاءِ

    If we differ then we have parted so look

    For difference calls for the parting of the commingled.

  6. كم أحمل الهمّ الغريب لصاحب ال

    حُسنِ الغريبِ بليت بالغرباءِ

    How much strange sorrow I carry for the friend of

    The strange beauty. I am afflicted by strangers.

  7. مِن كلِّ أسمر جفنُه أذخلتُه

    لولا ذبول الصعدةِ السمراءِ

    I have entered into the heart of every dark-eyed one,

    If not for the withering of the tawny rose.

  8. لا ينكرنّ العاذلون تفردي

    من دونه بالوجدِ والبرحاءِ

    The blamers cannot deny my uniqueness

    Apart from him in passion and devotion.

  9. فبما أكاتبُه أجيبَت دَعوتي

    وفديتُه من سائِر الأسواءِ

    So in what I write to him my call is answered

    And I ransom him from all misfortunes.

  10. جعلت مراشفه تلوذ بلحظه

    حتى حمى اللمياء بالنجلاءِ

    I have made his pillows take refuge in his glance

    Until the new moon is protected by the full moon.

  11. نكبت كِنانتها وقامت دونَها

    ترمي فم الداني وعين الرائي

    She turned away her cheeks and stood up without them

    Assailing the mouth of the repenter and the eye of the seer.

  12. لئن احتمت لقد احتمت من قبلها

    بأبي الحسين رئاسة الرؤساءِ

    If she sought refuge, she had sought it before

    In my father al-Husayn, the chief of chiefs.

  13. وأباحَها لمن استقلَّ نعيمها

    فأباح منها أصعب الأشياءِ

    And he permitted her what he had exclusive joy of

    So he allowed her the most difficult things.

  14. قوموا انظروا ما قام يصنعُ فانظروا

    ما يستحق به من الأسماءِ

    Arise, look at what he is doing, so look

    At what names he deserves for it.

  15. لقد استقامَ على طريقٍ في العُلى

    خشناءَ موحشةٍ من الرفقاءِ

    He has proceeded on a path of loftiness

    Bleak, desolate of friends.

  16. ربطَ المكارمَ في جوانبِ بيته

    لحوادثٍ يحدثنَ في العلياءِ

    He has tied virtues around all corners of his house

    For events that happen in the sublime.

  17. فالمجدُ رُبتما وهت أركانه

    حتى يُردَّ إلى يدَي بناءِ

    So glory was tied down and its pillars weakened

    Until it is returned to the hands of the builder.

  18. نهضَت لتدبيرِ الممالكِ نفسه

    فاستنهضَته لأثقلِ الأعباءِ

    His soul rose to administer the kingdoms

    So it roused him to the heaviest burdens.

  19. فقواطعُ الأسيافِ في أغمادها

    محبوسةٌ كقواطعِ الأراءِ

    The swords in their sheaths

    Imprisoned like the decisive judgments.

  20. إلا تكن نلت الوزارة ناشئاً

    فلقد نشأت مدبر الوزراءِ

    Unless you had attained the ministry as a youth,

    You would have grown up administering viziers.

  21. في نور مكرُمَةٍ ونارِ عزيمةٍ

    يتناهبانِ غياهبَ الظلماءِ

    In the light of an honored deed and the fire of resolve

    That contend with the gloom of darkness.
