The tears of parting are still wet upon my cheek,
And still my heart remains with my beloved.
I drank the wine of love though it was bitter,
As I had poured it for the cupbearer.
Since you decided, my heart no longer yearns,
No longer desiring, though blamed for detachment.
Never despair except for your beloved,
For no remedy cures love but the beloved.
He who fails the people is more excused
Than one slain by glances and eyelids attacking.
Languid eyes reveal lovesick distress,
As if my body suffers from its harm, unprotected.
I remained his captive by his watcher’s will
Until my cheek’s hair was freed by his release.
If I feared the blows of fate in dread,
My confession reveals my excess of caution.
Do not think that I am blind to destiny’s nights
When you see me turn my eyes away from them.
For fate has its times, and in the end
Its events are fulfilled from the palm of the Ordainer.
A hand that gives dew and glory to its greeter,
Until it nearly equals the hand that meets it.
Rising in the morn, the sword of glory fills it,
Then it spares the blood of those withholding generosity.
