تعرَّضتني فلو أنِّي على حَذرِ

لم يَحتَكم ناظِري في لذَّة النَظرِ

She allured me, had I been cautious

My eyes would not have reveled in her allure

وكنتُ أُغضي ولا أقضي له وَطراً

مِنها لِعلمي بعُقبى ذلك النَّظرِ

I would have lowered my gaze and not cast a glance

Knowing the consequence of that gaze

والمرءُ مادامَ ذا عَينٍ يقلِّبُها

في أعيُنِ العينِ مَوقوفٌ على خَطرِ

As long as one has roving eyes

He remains at the mercy of tempting sights

يَسرُّ مُقلتَه ما ضرَّ مهجتَهُ

لا مَرحَباً بسرورٍ عادَ بالضررِ

Gladdened by the joy, though hurt inside

No welcoming a joy that ended in harm

حتَّى تَرى قلبَه للنهبِ معتَرضاً

كأنَّه المالُ في يُمنَى أبي عُمرِ

You see his heart exposed as prey

As if it were wealth displayed in plain sight

تَراهُ فيها مُباحاً ليسَ يَمنعُه

من جاءَ يَطلُبُه من سائِر البَشرِ

To all who seek it among mankind

A nature generous, time does not change

خَليقةٌ في العَطايا لا يُغَيِّرُها

كرُّ الليالي عَلى الحالاتِ بالغيرِ

Though nights change states over time

A resolve forever shining bright

وهمَّةٌ لا تَزالُ الدهرَ مُشرقةً

طولاً وإن خالَفتها الحال بالقصرِ

However short days make it seem

He who lives content finds his quest

من كانَ من عَيشهِ صَفواً فقاصِدُه

يَحظى به وهوَ يَرضى منه بالكدرِ

And is pleased though life may get hard

My words counsel, if you hear them

يُنبيكَ قَولي إذا ما كنتَ سامعَه

وفعلُه أنَّنا جِئنا عَلى قدرِ

We came according to divine decree
