1. بدائِعُ من أفعالهن البَدائِعُ

    ويتَّفقُ اللَّفظانِ والخُلفُ واقِعُ

    Marvels are their deeds, marvels indeed

    The words accord, though the sequel does not agree

  2. يدافِعُني عَنهنَّ بأسٌ معارِضٌ

    نَصوحٌ إذا ما قَرَّبتني المَطامِعُ

    With might they defend me against the gainsayer

    Lances, if ambition brings me near

  3. أقولُ وقَد ألقيتُ للسَّلم جانِبي

    وبعضٌ لبعضٍ عَن فُؤادي مُدافِعُ

    I say, though I have cast peace aside

    And some with other in my heart collides

  4. علامَ تَجمَّعتُنَّ من كلِّ فِتنةٍ

    كأنَّ عَلى قَلبي لكُنَّ مُنازِعُ

    Why throng ye round from every tempting maze

    As though against my heart your wills ye raise

  5. وما همَّةُ الإنسانِ إلا هُمومُه

    وإلا فما شُغلي بِما اللَّهُ صانِعُ

    Man's purpose is only his cares

    Unless what Allah fashions he bears

  6. وإنِّي لَذو قَلبَينِ صابٍ وَصابِر

    كَما أَنا ذو دَمعَينِ عاصٍ وطائِعُ

    I have two hearts, one cured, one sick

    As I have two tears, one checked, one quick

  7. أَلا إنَّ أَعداءَ القُلوبِ عيونُها

    كَما أنَّ أعداءَ العُيونِ البَراقِعُ

    Lo, the foes of hearts are the eyes

    As the foes of eyes are the veils and spies

  8. وأحمرَ قانٍ باتَ قَلبي يَسحُّهُ

    ومجراهُ من خدَّيَّ أصفرُ فاقِعُ

    A wounded heart my breast within

    From my cheek flows yellow and thin

  9. له نحوكُم سَعيٌ بحالي وما سَعى

    ومَفهومُ قَولٍ ما وَعَته المسامِعُ

    For you my state speaks though I strive not

    And my words you understand though I speak not

  10. بَكيتُ ولم أشعُر لقَلبي لما بِه

    وقد شَرَّقته بِالدُّموعِ المَدامِعُ

    I wept, though for my heart I felt no care

    With copious tears my eyes began to wear

  11. وراميةٍ وجهَ السَّماءِ بمثلِه

    سَراباً فكُلٌّ في مَدى الطرَّفِ واسِعُ

    A lofty one, yet my gaze on high is free

    Each gazes as far as his sight can see

  12. هَممتُ ومالي غيرُ عَزمٍ أعدُّه

    لمَعمورةٍ بالخَوفِ وهيَ بَلاقِعُ

    I purposed, but I have none save a power prepared

    For a habitation of fear, empty and scared

  13. وذكر المُكنَّى بِالفَوارِسِ تاركٌ

    فوارِسَها شَخصي لَها الدَّهر رايعُ

    The mention of the knight now gone is mute

    For its knights are my person, fame is its repute

  14. فتىً خَشيَت في غابِه لأُسد صُحبَتي

    يُدافِعُ عنِّي بأسَها وتُدافِعُ

    A hero whose company I feared in the wild

    Defends me with his might and is my shield

  15. جَزاءً بِما أَضحَى يوقِّعُ رزقَها

    وتَمتثلُ التَّوقيعَ فيها الوَقائِعُ

    Meet guerdon for what he risks as my provider

    And upon him devolves all that betides

  16. إذا استَيقَظَت أَسيافُه لعُداتِه

    فلَيسَ لَها طَرفٌ من الخَوف هاجِعُ

    When their swords for the foe are awake at dawn

    No fear has any place, all rest withdrawn

  17. يَمينٌ لَها في أنفسِ الخَلقِ حكمُها

    وبُرهانُه بَينَ البريَّةِ ذائِعُ

    Their sway in men's souls by decree is bound

    Evidence thereof in the wilds is found

  18. يسارِعُ في يَوم اللِّقاءِ انتِهابَها

    وفي ردِّها يومَ العَطاءِ يُسارِعُ

    Hotly he hastens on the day of gain

    And in reverse on the day of gifts to attain

  19. ينالُ أميرُ المُؤمِنينَ لأَمرِه

    بناءً لَه من رأيهِ فيهِ رافِعُ

    The Commander of the Faithful, his affairs

    Find furtherance in the counsel that he bears

  20. ومثلُ إمامِ الدِّين يأتي صَنيعُهُ

    ومثلكَ يا بكجورُ تأتي الصَّنائِعُ

    The paragon of the Faith comes as his deed

    Comes your action, O Bakjur, among its breed

  21. لتأبى مُساواة المُلوكِ لك العُلى

    وأسمرُ نفَّاذٌ وأبيَضُ قاطِعُ

    You refuse to be matched with kings however great

    Dark in onset, white in fury'sWeight

  22. وخيلٌ سواءٌ عندها الكرُّ والكَلا

    كأنَّ الذي يَلقَى المَنِيَّةَ راتِعُ

    To your horses the attack and retreat are one

    As though the doomed man were still to run

  23. فإنَّ الذي أمسَت فَوارِسُها به

    مِن الناسِ بينَ الخَيلِ والقَومِ شائِعُ

    What your horsemen thereby scale of fame

    Among the horse is to the people's tongues the same

  24. أتيتَ مِن الأَفعالِ ما يقتَدى بِه

    وإن كانَ مَولودٌ لمجدِكَ شافِعُ

    You have wrought such deeds as shall e'er remembered be

    Though engendered by your might, a part of thee

  25. وما غابَ عنَّا ما إِليه مَصيرُه

    ونورُكَ فيه لا مَحالَةَ لامِعُ

    Unseen by us is naught of what is yours

    Your light therein assuredly endures

  26. أقولُ وما غَيري من الناسِ قائِلٌ

    ولا أحَدٌ في النَّاسِ غَيركَ سامِعُ

    I say, and none but I of men says this,

    None hears but you in all the crowd's abyss

  27. وكلٌّ لَه شِعرٌ ولكِنَّ مَسلَكي

    عَلَيهِ وإن نالَ المشَقَّةَ شاسِعُ

    Each has his poetry, but my way herein

    However difficult, is spacious and free

  28. إذا طَلعت خيلٌ فخيلُكَ كلُّها

    لِسُرعتِها عِندَ النِزالِ طَلائِعُ

    When steeds appear, yours are wholly fleetest found

    At the onset, the foremost to astound

  29. فسِر كيفَ ما أحبَبتَ في طلبِ العُلى

    فكلّ امرئٍ في قَصدِها لكَ تابِعُ

    Deem as you please in seeking loftiest place

    For in your course each man of might is bound
