1. حَثثْتُ على عنيف السَّير نُوقي

    وقدَّمت الطَّريق على الرفيق

    I urged the camels on through the night

    Putting the path before companionship

  2. وقد فتق الزَّمان على فؤادي

    هموماً فهي بارزة الفتوق

    Time has ripped my heart open

    With worries that stand out clear

  3. خرجت إلى جميل أبي جميل

    إلى الرحب الفضاء من المضيق

    I went out to the beautiful, very beautiful Abu Jameel

    To the open space from the narrow

  4. ولولا تمره والبرّ منه

    بقينا صابرين على السويق

    And were it not for his dates and blessings

    We would have remained patient on barley broth

  5. فلو جاد النقيب لنا بسمنٍ

    حَمِدْنا التمر يعجن بالدَّقيق

    So if the patron would grant us clarified butter

    We would praise the dates kneaded with flour

  6. رأت عيناي في سفر عجيب

    أعزّ لديَّ من بيض الأنوق

    My eyes saw on an amazing journey

    Dearer to me than the eggs of ostriches

  7. أخا رشد يغضّ من المعاصي

    وزنديق يتوب من الفسوق

    A rightly-guided brother who avoids sins

    And a heretic who repents from immorality

  8. وقالوا إنَّ قدّوري تردَّى

    رواء الناس كالبرّ الصدوق

    And they said that Quddoori had slipped

    And people avoided him like wholesome grain

  9. فآونة يصلّي في فريقٍ

    وآونة يسبّح في فريق

    For a while he prays with one group

    And for a while he glorifies God with another

  10. وأخبرني ثقات الناس عنه

    بأنْ لا زال في كرب وضيق

    And trusted people told me about him

    That he still remains in hardship and distress

  11. فكاد الشوق يحملني إليه

    فيستشفي مشوقٌ من مشوق

    So longing almost took me to him

    A longing one finding solace in another

  12. ولكنِّي كتبت له كتاباً

    كما كتب الشفيق إلى الشفيق

    But I wrote him a letter

    As a sincere friend writes to a sincere friend

  13. أُعزِّره على ترك الحُميَّا

    وأهديه إلى بئس الطريق

    I apologize to him for abandoning modesty

    And guide him to the misery of the path

  14. أقول له وبعض النصح غشٌّ

    بما بيني وبينك من حقوق

    I say to him, though some advice is deception

    Based on what is between us of rights

  15. وثوقك بالعذاب نهاك عنها

    وعفو الله أولى بالوثوق

    Your certainty of punishment prevented you from it

    And God’s forgiveness is more deserving of certainty

  16. وكم لله من فرجٍ قريبٍ

    وكم للعبد من سعة وضيق

    And how much relief does God have soon

    And how much capacity and distress the servant has

  17. أتنسى لا اقترفت الإِثم إلاَّ

    كبيراً بين مزمارٍ وبوق

    Do you forget when you committed the sin

    Great between pipe and trumpet

  18. ليالينا الَّتي انصرمت وولَّت

    حَلَتْ إلاَّ بكأس من رحيق

    Except through a cup of wine

    Our place wherever we got drunk

  19. وكان مكاننا أنَّى سكرنا

    مكان الكلب قارعة الطريق

    Was the place of the dog on the side of the road

    The wretched passes by us so we afflict him

  20. يمرُّ بنا الشّقيُّ فنبتليه

    ونزهد بالتقيّ المستفيق

    And we preach to the vigilant pious one

    And your saying to her who got drunk and slept

  21. وقولك للتي سكرت ونامت

    فعلت بك المقابح أو تفيقي

    “You have done ugly things to me, will you wake up?”

    I blocked the hearing of the beautiful woman by force

  22. سددت مسامع الحسناء قهراً

    بمثل الجذع من نخلٍ سحوق

    With something like the trunk of a bent palm tree

    Your guests inform me wherever they came from

  23. تخبّرني ضيوفك أين جاءَت

    بأنَّك قد بعدت عن اللحوق

    That you have distanced yourself from sobriety

    You call for food without drink

  24. تنادي بالطعام بلا شراب

    كما نهق الحمار على العليق

    Like the braying of a donkey over fodder

    And what is this that you have substituted for it

  25. وما هذا الَّذي عوّضت عنها

    وهل يُغني الحديث عن العتيق

    Can talk make up for the old?

    Was I not corrupted just as you see me

  26. ألم تك بالفساد كما تراني

    يشقُّ عليَّ أن أعصي شقيقي

    It pains me to disobey my brother

    So enjoyment did not last for a shouter

  27. فلا طابتْ أُوَيقات لصاحٍ

    رمى أُمَّ الخبائث بالعقوق

    Who threw the mother of evils with disobedience

    You certainly disturbed my serenity that day

  28. لقد كدَّرْتَ يومئذٍ صفائي

    وقد أيبست بالتأنيب ريقي

    And my saliva dried up from the rebuke

    And I became pleased with you, displeased

  29. وأصبح عنك راضي غير راضٍ

    فلا ترْكن إلى سخط الصديق

    So do not incline toward the anger of a friend

    And I was granted happiness through sins

  30. وقد رزق السعادة بالمعاصي

    بسلطنة ابن سلطان رزوقي

    With the sultanate of the son of the sultan Rizuki

    He has come to bite his hands

  31. لقد أمسى يعضُّ على يديه

    ويختار الرَّحيق على الحريق

    And he chooses wine over inferno

    And how much mature wine he saw

  32. وكم خمرٍ معتّقةٍ رآها

    ففضَّلها على الخلِّ العتيق

    He preferred over old vinegar

    The lowly kind did not quench him

  33. وكانَ الدنّ لا يروي مناها

    فأصبح يشمئزّ من النشوق

    He has come to disdain cravings

    And how many penitents before this

  34. وكم من تائبٍ من قبل هذا

    مروع من كبائره فروق

    Were frightened of their major differences

    And the distinction of penitents for me today

  35. وحدّ التَّائبين اليوم عندي

    اختياراً رميهم بالمنجنيق

    Is their choosing to pelt them with the catapult

    So what a repentance that returned upon him

  36. فيا لك توبة عادت عليه

    بأن يهوي سحيقاً من سحيق

    To plummet far down from heights

    We saw him praying the five obligatory

  37. رأيناهُ يُصلِّي الخَمْسَ باقٍ

    بمحراب الصَّلاة على الشَّهيق

    At the prayer niche loudly sobbing

    So we unleashed poetry demons upon him

  38. فسلَّطنا شياطين القوافي

    عليه بالصّبوح وبالغَبُوق

    In the early dawn and during dark night

    And we tempted him during obvious sorcery

  39. وأغوينا في سحرٍ مبينٍ

    من التبيان بالشعر الرقيق

    Of eloquence with gentle poetry

    Until he returned more corrupt than before

  40. إلى أن عاد أفسق من عَليها

    وأَسرَعَ بالإِجابة من سلوقي

    And faster to respond than a beardless boy

    Whenever he drew closer to the devil

  41. فما يدنو من الشيطان إلاَّ

    تَمَسَّكَ منه بالحبل الوثيق

    He clung to the strong rope from Him

    He had a blessing, had he duly preserved it

  42. وكان بنعمةٍ لو كانَ يرعى

    لها حقًّا ويوفي بالحقوق

    And fulfilled the rights

    But here he is after it in any case

  43. وها هو بعدها في كلِّ حالٍ

    تغيّر بالمجاز عن الحقيقي

    Changed in metaphor from reality

    He spent a lifetime serving patrons

  44. قضى في خدمةِ النقباء عمراً

    وتلك نضارة العيش الأَنيق

    The elegance of pleasant living

    You are drowning, Abu Salman, in it

  45. غريقك يا أبا سلمان فيها

    وكم في بحرِ جودك من غريق

    And how many are drowning in your sea of generosity

    Raja, who takes refugee in you, says

  46. يقول رجاء من آوي إليه

    لقد حنَّتْ إلى الخيرات نوقي

    My determination has tilted toward good things

    He hopes high hopes from your magnanimity

  47. يؤمّل من مكارمك الأَماني

    ويرقبُ منك صادقة البروق

    And awaits from you the truthful lightning

    When the suns of the Family of Ali have not gone down

  48. فلا غابت شموس بني عليٍّ

    وقد أَذِنَتْ علينا بالشروق

    Informing us of the dawn

    The images of glory shine for us

  49. تلوحُ لنا بهم صُوَرُ المعالي

    فتهدينا إلى المعنى الدَّقيق

    Guiding us to the subtle meaning

    To your door, Master of Patrons, running

  50. لبابك سيِّد النُّقباء وافت

    منبِّئةً علاك عن العلوق

    Informing about your utmost glory

    The hidden becomes revealed to you, revealing

  51. وتكشف عندك الأَستار كشفاً

    بحرّ القول عن حال الرَّقيق

    The essence of speech about the condition of the weak

    Urging the camels hastily treading

  52. تحثُّ السَّير مسرعةً تهادى

    إلى علياك من فجٍّ عميق

    To your glorious heights from a deep ravine

    People stand over them equal

  53. تقوم على الرُّؤوس لهم أناس

    تساويهم على قَدَمٍ وسوق

    On foot and marketplace
