1. Saʿd blamed me for

    my passion for Suʿād’s people.

  2. So leave off blame, and pay no heed

    to error or right guidance.

  3. I am in one valley, and whoever

    blames passion is in another valley.

  4. The caravan struck camp at morning,

    and a camel-driver urged it onward.

  5. So my tears pour down,

    and my heart is aflame.

  6. Passion has led me, though

    I was hard for it to rein.

  7. And for al-Jazʿ and the people of al-

    Jazʿ, this heart is thirsting.

  8. May al-Jazʿ and all within

    al-Jazʿ be watered by pouring morning rains.

  9. They brought my death close to me

    the day they resolved to go far away.

  10. By their departure they desired,

    in love, what I did not desire.

  11. My appointed death has come, O my two companions,

    O sons of my affection—

  12. you who are bliss to my eyes

    and torment to my heart.

  13. This is the final end in love

    of those beginnings.
