1. عَدِّ عنْ مَنْ لجَّ في قالٍ وقيلِ

    أنا لا أصغي إلى قول العذولِ

    Turn away from those embroiled in saying and telling,

    I do not listen to the words of the fickle.

  2. وأعِدْ لي ذكر مَن صَحَّ الهوى

    منه بالطَّرق وبالجسم العليل

    And recall for me those whose love held firm,

    Made sick by yearning, emaciated in body.

  3. فَقَدْ الصّبرَ مع الوَجد فما

    لاذ بالصبر عن الوجه الجميل

    Patience alongside passion is lost, so what

    Refuge is there for me in patience from a fair face?

  4. من قدودٍ طَعَنَتْ طعنَ القنا

    ولحاظٍ فتكتَ فتك النصول

    With glances that stab like a brave warrior’s spear

    And eyes that slay with the killing of arrows.

  5. دنفٌ لولا تباريحُ الجوى

    ما قضى الوجد عليه بالنحول

    A fawn whom, were it not for the wounds of passion,

    Wasting sickness would not have worn him down.

  6. كلّما شام سنا بارقه

    جَدّ جدّ الوجد بالدمع الهمول

    Whenever his evening came around, the passion

    Flowed copiously with tears.

  7. إنَّ ما أضرِمَ في أحشائه

    من خليلٍ في الهوى نار الخليل

    For in his breast burns the fire of a friend,

    The passion of the lover for his beloved.

  8. وإذا هبَّت به ريحُ صَبا

    راح يستشفي عليلٌ بعليل

    And when the zephyr breeze of morning blows on him

    One sufferer seeks the comfort of another.

  9. كَبِدٌ حرّى ودمعٌ واكفٌ

    فهو ما بين حريق وسيول

    A liver that burns, tears flow,

    So he is in the midst of conflagration and floods.

  10. لو تراه إذ نأتْ أحبابه

    تَطَأ الأرض بوخد وذميل

    If only you could see him when his loved ones depart,

    Head bowed, stumbling on the ground.

  11. لا تسل عن ما جرى كيف جرى

    سائل الدمع على الخدّ الأسيل

    Ask not about what has passed and how,

    Asker of tears down the cheeks they course.

  12. أيّ يومٍ يوم سارت عيسُهم

    ودعا داعي نواهم بالرحيل

    What day was it when his Usayy left

    And the caller called for their departure?

  13. وتراني بعدهم أشكو الأسى

    لبقايا من رسوم وطلول

    And here am I after them complaining of sorrow

    To the remnants of dwellings and deserted encampments,

  14. وبرسم الدار من أطلالهم

    ما بجسمي من سقام ونحول

    By the outline of the abode from their ruins

    Wasting in body, sickly and frail.

  15. بخلوا بالوصل لما أعرضوا

    ومن البلوى نوال من بخيل

    They denied intimacy when they turned away

    And I gained tribulation from one who denies kindness.

  16. ليت شعري ولَكم أشكو إلى

    باردِ الرِّيقة من حر الغليل

    Would that I knew, for how long shall I complain

    To one cold of temper for my fervid passion?

  17. لا أرى المحنة كالحبّ ولا

    كالهوى للصبّ من داء قتول

    I see no calamity like love, no

    Illness for the young man like death from love’s arrows,

  18. بأبي من أخَذَت أحداقه

    مهجة الوامق بالأخذ الوبيل

    By my father, whom the glances of the doe took,

    A terrible, pernicious blow!

  19. وشفائي قُربُ من أسْقَمَني

    بسقام الطرف والخصر النحيل

    And my remedy is the nearness of her who made me sick

    With the illness of eyes and slender waist.

  20. هل علمتم أنَّ أحداق المها

    خلقت حينئذٍ سحرَ العقول

    Do you not know that the glances of the doe

    Were created then to bewitch minds?

  21. يا دياراً لأحباءٍ نَأت

    ألناءٍ عنك يوماً من وصول

    O dwellings of loved ones who came

    One day to visit you and are now departed!

  22. كانَ روض العيش فيها يانعاً

    قبل أن آذَنَ عودي بالذبول

    The garden of life in them was verdant

    Before the time of my return warned of decay.

  23. بمدامٍ أشرقَتْ أقداحها

    بزغت كالشمس في ثوب الأصيل

    With wine whose goblets shone,

    Dawning like the sun in a cloak of silk.

  24. وشَدَت وَرقاء في أفنانها

    أوتِيَت عِلماً بموسيقى الهديل

    And tender boughs in their branches

    Were given knowledge of the music of rustling.

  25. حبذا اللّهو وأيام الصبا

    وشمال وكؤوس من شمول

    Blessed be play and days of youth

    And wine and cups of drunkenness!

  26. وندامى نظمَتهم ساعةٌ

    وَقَعتْ منا بأحضان القبول

    And drinking companions, brought together for a while

    In our embrace, welcomed favorably!

  27. علِّلاني بعدها من عودها

    بمرام غير مرجو الحصول

    After them, their return reproached me

    For a purpose unattainable.

  28. إذ مضت وهي قصيرات المدى

    فلها طال بكائي وعويلي

    Since they went, brief in their term,

    My weeping and wailing have grown long.

  29. جَهِل اللائم ما بي ورأى

    أنْ يفيد العلم نصحاً من جهول

    The critic in his ignorance knows not what ails me

    And supposes his knowledge benefits from the ignorance of fools.

  30. لا ينال الحمد في مدحي له

    من يعد الفضل من نوع الفضول

    He who counts favor as meddling

    Attains no praise in praising me.

  31. وأراني والحجى من أربي

    في عريض الجاه ذي الباع الطويل

    And I see myself, though my pedigree is noble

    Of far-reaching renown and long lineage,

  32. كلّما أنظمها قافيةً

    تنظم الإحسان في قول مقول

    Whenever I string verses into a poem,

    I string kindness into well-turned speech.

  33. وعلى خِفَّتها في وزنها

    تطأ الحساد بالقول الثقيل

    And despite their lightness in meter

    They trample the envious with weighty words.

  34. بالغ في كلِّ يوم مَرَّ بي

    من أبي عيسى نوالاً من مُنيل

    Your father lavished on me every day

    A share from a streaming pool.

  35. لا يريني العيش إلاَّ رغداً

    في نعيم من جميل ابن الجميل

    Life shows me only ease

    In the bounty of the son of the beautiful one.

  36. ينظر النجم إلى عليائه

    نظر المعجب بالطرف الكليل

    The star looks to his loftiness

    With the gaze of one enchanted by a languid eye.

  37. يرتقيها درجات في العُلى

    فترى الحاسد منها في نزول

    He climbs the degrees of highness

    Until you see the envious man descending.

  38. قصرت عن شأوه حساده

    وانثنى عنهم بباع مستطيل

    His enviers fall short of his distinction

    And turn away with outstretched necks.

  39. نُسِبَ الجود إلى راحته

    نسبة السحر إلى الطرف الكحيل

    Generosity was attributed to his open-handedness

    As sorcery is attributed to kohl on the eyelid.

  40. وروى نائله عن سيبه

    ما روى الريَّ عن الغيث الهطول

    And he quenched those he favored from his grandfather

    As heavy rain quenches the thirsty.

  41. كاد أن تمزجه رقّته

    بنسيم من صَبا نجدٍ بليلِ

    His gentleness almost mixed him

    With the soft night breeze of Nejd.

  42. أيُّها الآخذ عن آبائه

    سُنَنَ المعروف بالفعل الجميل

    O you who takes from his forefathers

    The excellent traditions of fine conduct!

  43. مكرماتٌ جئتُ للناس بها

    عَجَزَتْ عنها فحول من فحول

    Kind deeds have I brought for people

    That even the boldest heroes have failed to achieve.

  44. هذه الناس الَّتي في عصرنا

    ما رأينا لك فيهم من مثيل

    These people of our time―I have not seen

    For you amongst them a single peer.

  45. شرفٌ أوضَحُ من شمس الضحى

    ليس يحتاج سناها لدليل

    A nobility brighter than the rising sun,

    It needs no evidence to prove its identity!

  46. إن هَزَزْناك هَزَزنا صارماً

    يفلق الهام بريًّا من فلول

    For if we jostled you we would jostle a blade

    That splits resolve like a piercing spearhead.

  47. أسأل الله لك العزَّ الَّذي

    كانَ من أشرف آمالي وسولي

    I ask Allah for you a power

    That was among the highest of my hopes.

  48. دائِمَ النعمة منهلَّ الحيا

    مورد الظامي بعذب سلسبيل

    Ever blessed, a source of bounty,

    Sweetly flowing for the oppressed.

  49. فلنعمائِك عندي أثرٌ

    أثَرَ الوابل في الروض المحيل

    For your blessings have such influence on me

    As rainfall on the lush meadow.

  50. لو شكرت الدهر ما خَوَّلتني

    لا أفي حقَّ كثير من قليل

    If I thanked fate I would not empower me

    To fulfill even a little of the immense debt.

  51. إنَّما أنتُم غيوثٌ في الندى

    وإذا كانت وغىً آساد غيل

    Indeed you are downpours amidst bounty,

    And when heroes despair, shelter from adversity.

  52. نجباءٌ من كرام نجُبٍ

    والكرام النجب من هذا القبيل

    Nobles from the noble people of Jubayr

    Whose nobles are known to be of this tribe.

  53. ألبَسوني الفخر في مدحي لهم

    وكَسَوْني كلَّ فضفاض الذيول

    They clothed me with pride in praising them

    And covered me in the loose folds of trailing hems,

  54. وأرَوني العزَّ خفضاً عيشه

    والردى أهونُ من عيش الذليل

    And showed me glory clearly in their life of ease,

    While misery is easier than the life of disgrace.

  55. زيَّنوا شعري بذكرى مجدهم

    في أعاريضِ فعيل وفعول

    They adorned my poetry with their glorious feats

    In the meters Fa‘īl and Fa‘ūl.

  56. إنَّهم فضلٌ وبأسٌ وندى

    زينة الافرند للسيف الصقيل

    Verily they are merit, valor and happiness,

    Decoration of the sword's hilt for the polished blade.

  57. وزكَتْ أعراقُهُم منذ نَمَت

    بفروع زاكيات وأصول

    And their roots have been purified since they grew

    With branches purely virtuous and roots sound.

  58. في سبيل الله ما قد أنْفَقوا

    لليتامى ولأبناء السبيل

    What they spent in God’s cause

    For orphans and wayfarers!

  59. أنفَقوا أموالهم وادَّخروا

    حسنات الذكر في المجد الأثيل

    They spent their wealth and invested

    Fair rewards in enduring glory

  60. تخلق الدهر وتكسو جدّة

    وتعيد الذكر جيلاً بعد جيل

    Which defies time, adorns nobility,

    And perpetuates fame for generations to come.

  61. يا نجوماً أشرَقَتْ في أفقنا

    لا رماكِ الله يوماً بالأفول

    O stars shining on our horizon

    May God never make you set!

  62. أنتمُ الكنز الَّذي أدخره

    للملمّات من الخطب الجليل

    You are the treasure I have stored away

    For when disasters strike.

  63. وإليكم ينتهي لي أمَلٌ

    كاد أنْ يطمِعَني بالمستحيل

    In you culminates a hope for me

    That almost made me covet the unattainable.

  64. كم وكم لي فيكم من مِدَحٍ

    رفعت ذكري بكم بعد الخمول

    So many, so many praises have I

    That raised my name from oblivion through you.

  65. فمتى أغدو إلى إحسانكم

    إنَّما أغدو إلى ظلٍّ ظليل

    So when shall I come seeking your grace?

    To seek it is to seek a shady shelter!

  66. لم أزل أحظى لديكم بالغنى

    والعطاءِ الجمِّ والمال الجزيل

    Never have I ceased to enjoy wealth with you

    And ample bounty, gifts and riches.
