With what sorrow did you fold your ribs,

And shed the tears that you found?

And from what state of love do you complain,

A frightened heart and terrifying longing?

I recalled our days in fever,

When the thickets adorned those plains.

And I did not know when I recalled days gone by,

Were they tears that flowed or sobbing?

And your companion said when he saw you,

You were never one to broadcast sorrow before.

For something makes these tears flow,

When you sense a flash of agony in grief.

And when you lost the beloved of your heart

The morning after cloudy days, you lost consolation.

And the morning love called you

To carry passion, obedient and compliant.

And I advised you against her before,

And blamed you more, so your torment grew.

And when you desired to carry passion’s load

You shouldered passion, and will no longer have the strength.

And you came to weep at the abodes of those departed,

For an era when dawn used to rise over the living.

And our days in the springtime of youth,

Even if they are not caravans returning.

So if you weep for their loss, O Hathaym,

Then take me with you and let us cry together.
