1. لمَنْ أيْنُقٌ يا سَعْدُ تُرْقِلُ أو تخدي

    تُغَوّرُ في غَوْر وتُنْجِدُ في نَجْد

    For whom do you gracefully move, O Saad

    Do you wander in the valley and help in Najd

  2. حَوَانٍ كأمثال القسيِّ سهامها

    أَعاريب ترمي بالسّرى غرض القصد

    Like the arrows of the unerring archer

    Arabs who aim surely towards the target

  3. لهم فتكاتُ البيض والبيض شُرَّعٌ

    بأَغبر من وقع الحوادث مسوَدّ

    They have the murders of the innocent

    Blackened by the news of calamities

  4. صَوادٍ إلى وِرْد المنون وما لهم

    من العِزِّ إلاَّ كلّ صافية الوِرْد

    Hunters heading to the meadows of death

    With no honour but the pure meadows

  5. جحاجحةٌ شمُّ العرانين هُتَّفٌ

    بكلّ بعيد الغور ملتهب الزّند

    Clamouring, perceiving the smell of fox

    Every distant valley has an ignited firebrand

  6. على مثل معوجّ الحنايا ضوامر

    طَوَيْنَ الفيافي كيف ما شئن بالأَيدي

    Like the bending of the eyebrows are warriors

    Bending their slender waists however they wish

  7. أقولُ لحاديها رُوَيْدَك إنَّها

    بقايا عظام قد تعقَّفن بالجلد

    I say to their guide: Gently, they are

    But remains of bones wrapped up in skin

  8. زجرت المطايا غير وانٍ فسرْ بها

    على ضعفها لا بالذميل ولا الوخد

    I scolded the riding camels when they startled

    For their weakness, not for vigour or firmness

  9. أَلَسْتَ تراها في رسومٍ دوارسٍ

    لها وقفة المأسور قُيّد في قيد

    Do you not see them in the forms of young women

    Standing like captives, tied up

  10. وما ذاك إلاَّ من غرامٍ تُجِنُّه

    وما كانَ أنْ يَخْفى عليك بما تبدي

    That is but because of love that maddens them

    What they show cannot be hidden from you

  11. وإلاّ فما بال المطِيّ يروعُها

    رسيسُ جوًى يعدو وداءُ هوًى يُعدي

    Why else would the stallion shy from them?

    The neighing of a mare startles, the illness of desire infects

  12. وشامَتْ وميض البرق ليلاً فراعَها

    سنا البارق النجيّ وقداً على وقد

    They saw the lightning flash at night, it scared them

    The sparkling of lightning and fuel over fuel

  13. وعاودها ذكر الغَميم فأصْبحَتْ

    تلوذُ بماد الدَّمع من حرقة الوجد

    The memory of clouds reminded them

    So they sought refuge in teardrops from the heat of passion

  14. فَسِيقَ إليها الشَّوقُ من كلّ وجهةٍ

    وليس لها في ذلك الشوق من بُدِّ

    Longing was brought to them from every side

    With no escape from that longing

  15. وقد فارقت من بعد لمياءَ أوجهاً

    يسيل لها دمع العيون على الخدِّ

    After the beauty of their faces left

    Tears flow down their cheeks

  16. وساءَ زمانٌ بعد أنْ سرّها بهم

    فماذا يلاقي الحرُّ في الزَّمن الوغد

    Times changed after they enjoyed them

    What will the free experience in hostile times?

  17. ويوشك أن تقضِي أسًى وتلهُّفاً

    على فائت لا يستمالُ إلى الردّ

    It almost makes them die of misery

    For those departed who cannot be brought back

  18. سقى الله من عينيَّ أَكناف حاجر

    إذا هي تستجدي السَّحاب فما تجدي

    May God water the sides of Hajar from my eyes

    When she begs the clouds but finds no rain

  19. ورَعياً لأيَّام مضتْ في عِراصِها

    تُؤَلِّفُ بين الظبْي والأسَدِ الوَرْدِ

    Keeping the memory of days past in her plains

    Bringing together the gazelle and lion in harmony

  20. قَضَيْنا بها اللّذّات حتَّى تصرَّمَتْ

    وكنَّا ولا نظم الجمان من العقد

    We enjoyed pleasures till we were satiated

    And we were like a pearl necklace

  21. سلامٌ على تلك الدِّيار وإنْ عَفَتْ

    منازلُ أَحبابي وعَهْدُ بني ودِّي

    Greetings to those lands though abandoned

    The houses of my loved ones and days of friendship

  22. فمن مبلغٌ عنِّي الأَحبَّةَ أنَّني

    حليف الهوى فيهم على القرب والبعد

    Who will convey to my loved ones

    That I am a lover near or far

  23. ذكرتُهُم والوجدُ في القلب كامن

    عليهم كمُونَ النَّار في الحجر الصّلد

    I remembered them while passion lies latent

    In my heart like the spark in solid stone

  24. فهل ذكروا عهد الهوى يوم قَوَّضوا

    وهل عَلموا أنِّي مقيمٌ على العهد

    Did they remember the days of love when they left?

    Did they know I'm still true to those days?

  25. وما اكتحلت عينايَ بالغمض بعدهم

    كما اكتحلت بالغمض أعينهم بعدي

    My eyes were not lined with kohl after them

    As were lined their eyes after me

  26. وما رُحْتُ أشكو لو حَظِيتُ بقربهم

    زماناً رماني بالقطيعة والصّدِّ

    I wouldn’t have complained if I met them

    After times estranged me with separation and avoidance

  27. أما وعليّ القَدْر وهي أليَّةٌ

    رَفَعْتُ بها قدري وشدتُ بها مجدي

    But fate is against me, yet an ally

    With it I raised my status and strengthened my glory

  28. لقد سدَّ ما بيني وبين خطوبه

    فهل كانَ ذو القرنين في ذلك السّدِّ

    If God wills, he shows me in this life by his grace

    Face to face what's said of the eternal garden

  29. أراني أسارير الزَّمان إذا بدا

    وأَقبلَ إقبالَ الكريم على الوفد

    And he guides me to his generosity which presents its chastity

    And does not deny favour to the rising Crescent

  30. ومنه متى حانت إليَّ التفاتَةٌ

    فلا نحسَ للأيَّام في نظر السّعد

    The light of Muhammad's family appears in him

    As shone the Indian sword from its sheathe

  31. كريمٌ إذا استعطفت نائِلَ بِرِّهِ

    وقد يعطف المولى الكريم على العبد

    The light of his forehead almost reveals

    His noble lineage and guiding nobility

  32. إذا شاءَ في الدُّنيا أراني بفضله

    مشافهة ما قيل في جنَّة الخلد

    Born of honourable Imam fathers

    Rightly guiding by God's command to righteousness

  33. وأَمَّنني إلى جَدواه يهدي عفاته

    ولا ينكر المعروف بالقائم المَهدي

    They were raised in the burrows of glory until they grew

    Above the steeds and the plumed horses

  34. يلوحُ عليه نور آل محمَّد

    كما لاح إفرندٌ من الصَّارم الهندي

    So I have with them the bond of allegiance—why not?

    They were not created but as deserving ties and pacts

  35. يكاد يدلُّ النَّاسَ ضوءُ جبينه

    على النسَب المرفوع والحسب المعدي

    If one aspect of their description comes

    I read on their events Surat Al-Hamd

  36. نتيجة آباءٍ كرامٍ أئمَّةٍ

    هُداةٍ بأمر الله تهدي إلى الرُّشد

    For I was raised by them since the cradle to grave

    I live in comfort by their generosity

  37. رُبُوا في جحور المجد حتَّى ترعرعوا

    وفوق جياد الخيل والضمَّرِ الجُرْد

    And I wouldn't be in Baghdad without their kindness

    Quenching my thirst and living in plenty

  38. فلي فيهم عقد الولاء وكيف لا

    ولم يخلقوا إلاَّ أَولي الحلّ والعقد

    Blessings to one whose wealth still enriches me

    And reminds me of David's days

  39. إذا ما أتى في هل أتى بعض وصفهم

    قرأتُ على أجداثهم سورة الحمد

    He is the vast, roaring sea to the hopeful

    Did minds comprehend his limits?

  40. على أنَّني فيهم ربيبٌ وإنَّني

    أعيشُ بجدواهم من المهد للَّحد

    He has the lightning of pouring rain yet no

    Thunder like your father’s—not at all!

  41. وما أَنا في بغدادَ لولا جميلهم

    لدى منهلي عذبٍ ولا عيشة رغد

    You are not like gushing springs in their commotion

    With your generosity and provision

  42. فبُورك من لا زالَ يُورثني الغنى

    وذكَّرني أيَّام داود ذي الأَيدي

    I angered rivals till you found me

    Filling the age’s breasts with hatred

  43. وهب أنَّه البحرُ الخضَمُّ لآملٍ

    فهل وَقَفَتْ منه العقولُ على حدّ

    You gave Abu Salman to all the people

    The desert was not frightened when you were absent

  44. له بارق الغيث المُلِثّ وما له

    لعمر أبيك الخير جلجلة الرَّعد

    The hopeful were not deprived of your virtues

    Whose taste at my hands is made lawful

  45. وما أشبَهَتْكَ المرسَلات بوبلها

    بما لك من جدوًى وما لك من رفد

    My soul ransoms you, and all people

    Not just me among them all

  46. أغَظْتُ بك الحُسَّاد حتَّى وَجَدْتَني

    ملأتُ بها صدرَ الزَّمان من الحقد

    You rise above the nobles of Hashim’s sons

    And destroy their towering glories

  47. سلِمْتَ أبا سلمان للناس كلّها

    ولا رُوِّعَتْ منكَ البريَّة في فقد

    You were kind, then you changed

    Benefiting at times, failing at others

  48. ولا حُرِمَ الرَّاجون فيما تُنيله

    مكارم تُسْتَحلى مذاقتُها عندي

    You are like a sun in the sky

    But the radiance of the sun is veiled by cataracts

  49. فداؤك نفسي والأَنام بأَسرها

    وما أنا من يفديك من بينهم وحدي

    I bear witness that there is no god but Him

    The nectar of your palms is sweeter than honey

  50. لتعلو على الأَشراف أبناء هاشم

    وتقضي على علاّتها إرَبَ المجد

    The blessed Eid returned your happiness

    So you gave tidings after that of return

  51. وما زلتَ مرَّ السّخط مسْتَعْذَبَ النَّدى

    فآونةً تُجدي وآونة تردي

    To you, so I present unto you verses

    Beauties narrated, not out of obligation or effort

  52. كأَنَّك شمسٌ في السَّماء وإنَّما

    بضُرّ ضياء الشَّمس بالحَدَقِ الرُّمدِ

    A client of your hands that are sought in pardon

    Your poet known for wit and wisdom

  53. شَهِدتُ بأن لا ربَّ غيره

    وأنَّ ندى كفَّيك أحلى من الشهد

  54. لقد عادك العيد المبارك بالهنا

    فبشّرته من بعد ذلك بالعَوْد

  55. إليك فمُهديها إليك قوافياً

    محاسن تروى لا عن القدّ والنَّهد

  56. ربيب أياديك الَّتي يستَميحها

    وشاعرك المعروف بالهزل والجدّ
