1. بَكَيْتُ الدِّيارَ وأطلالَها

    وقد بَدَّلَ البينُ تِمثالَها

    I wept for the abodes and their ruins

    And time has changed their appearance

  2. وأخنى عليها خطوبُ الزمان

    فما خالَها تلم من خالِها

    And I lamented the vicissitudes of fate that afflicted them

    None of their ruins equals what remains of them

  3. وفي مهجتي للجوى لوعةٌ

    تُقَطِّع بالوَجْد أوصالها

    In my innermost being is anguish for the past

    That tears my very joints with longing

  4. لقد سوَّلَتْ ليَ سَيْلَ الدموع

    فما قلتُ يومئذٍ ما لَها

    Indeed my tears have given me free rein

    And I did not say then, “What is the matter with them?”

  5. تذكَّرتُ عصرَ الصبا والهوى

    يُهَيّجُ للنفس بلبابها

    I recalled the era of my youth and passion

    That stirs the soul with its first stirrings,

  6. وما اختلس الدهر من لَذَّةٍ

    لعهدَ الصبابة واغتالها

    And the fleeting pleasures that fate stole

    From the days of my youth but killed them

  7. زمانٌ أُعاقرُ فيه العقار

    وأعصي بِلَهْويَ عذّالها

    An era in which the ruins lie fallow

    And my playfulness chastises me,

  8. وأمشي بها مَرَحاً تستميل

    من السكر بالراح ميَّالَها

    And I walk about intoxicated

    Letting the gentle wind incline me

  9. وكم غادةٍ في ليالي الوصال

    جَمَعْتُ مع القُرط خِلخالها

    And many a maiden in the nights of union

    I gathered with anklets and bracelets

  10. وما زلتُ أرشف من ريقها

    لُماها وأشْرَبُ جريالها

    And I still quaff from their saliva

    And drink deep their redolence

  11. لئِنْ كانَ ريقك يحيي النفوس

    فقد كانَ لحظُك قتّالها

    If your saliva brings souls back to life

    Then your glance is their killer

  12. وساقيةٍ عمَّها حُسْنُها

    بجنحِ دُجًى قد حكى خالها

    And a cupbearer whom beauty did cover

    With the wings of night that told of her mole

  13. تديرُ النضار بكأس اللجين

    فتحكي المصابيحَ سيّالها

    She passes around the bright wine

    Relating thereby the sparkling of its pourer

  14. كُمَيْتاً تجولُ بمضمارها

    جآذرُ تَصْرَعُ أبطالها

    Two respective warriors in their arena

    Whose blades make their heroes fall

  15. فيا طيب معسول ذاك اللمى

    إذا هَصَرَ الصَبُّ عسَّالها

    So excellent was that smooth wine

    When the youth poured freely

  16. ولستُ بناسٍ لها ما مضى

    وإنْ كنتُ أعْمَلْتُ إهمالها

    I am not one to dwell on what is past

    Though I neglected it before

  17. ولياليَ لم أبد تفصيلها

    إذا أنا أبديتُ إجمالها

    And nights whose details I did not manifest

    When I gave but their overall picture

  18. وأُبْتُ لمشبهة في المسير

    زفيفَ النَّعامة أو رالها

    And I stride like the gait of an ostrich

    Or the pacing of a seeker for pasture

  19. كأنِّي تَكلَّفْتُ مَسحاً بها

    عروضَ البلاد وأطوالها

    As if I undertook by it to traverse

    The horizons of countries and climes

  20. طويتُ القفار وخُضْتُ البحار

    ورُضْتُ الخطوبَ وأهوالها

    I crossed the barren lands and sailed the seas

    And experienced hardships and tribulations

  21. وجرَّبْتُ أبناءَ هذا الزمان

    وعَرَّفني الدهرُ أحوالها

    And I tried the scions of this age

    And time acquainted me with their states

  22. وإنِّي لَذاكَ الَّذي تَعْرِفونَ

    حَمَلْتُ المروءة أثقالها

    It is I whom you know

    Who shouldered the heaviest of burdens

  23. وإنْ قلَّ ما في يدي لم أكنْ

    لأشكو من العصر إقلالها

    And if little there be in my hands

    I do not complain of the times ignoring me

  24. وإن أنا أتربتُ فالمكرمات

    تُحدِّثُ بأنِّيَ فَعَّالَها

    And if I am raised in the cradle of honors

    It is recent favors that speak of my deeds

  25. وحَسْبك من ذي يدٍ أصبَحْت

    تطولُ ولا ذو يدٍ طالها

    It suffices you from one whose hand

    Becomes long but does not overreach

  26. وإنْ أعْضَلَتْ مشكلاتُ الأمور

    أزال وفسَّر إشكالها

    And if the complexities of affairs limp

    I untangle and explain their complications

  27. وقافية من شرود الكلام

    بأخبار سلمان قد قالها

    And in the rhyme scheme a digression

    From the discourse, Salman spoke it

  28. وأرْسَلَها مثلاً في الثناء

    وخَصَّ بمن شاءَ إرسالها

    And made it an example in praise

    Sending it to whom he wished

  29. فتًى يقتفي إثرَ آبائه

    وحاكَتْ مزاياه أفعالها

    A young man who follows in the footsteps of his forebears

    Whose qualities resemble their deeds

  30. تنال من الله نعمَ الثوابُ

    وتُنْفِقُ لله أموالَها

    They attain from God the blessing of reward

    And they spend their wealth for God

  31. تَفَجَّر من راحتيه النَّدى

    وأوْرَدَ من شاءَ سلسالها

    The dew springs from their palms

    And gives drink to whom they wish

  32. من السَّادة النُجُبِ الطاهرين

    تَزينُ العصورَ وأجيالها

    Of the eminent nobles, the pure ones

    Who adorn the ages and generations

  33. لقد طهَّر الله تلك الذوات

    وأجرى على الخير أعمالها

    God has indeed purified those persons

    And set their deeds toward goodness

  34. بني الغَوثِ غوث فحول الرجا

    ل إذا اشتدَّ بالناس ما هالها

    O sons of succor, the prime of men

    When hardship besets the people with its horrors

  35. وأفعالُها في جميع الصَّنيع

    من البِرِّ تَسْبِقُ أقوالها

    And their deeds in all proper behavior

    In righteousness precede their words

  36. فما زلتُ أذكر تفضيلها

    وما زلت أشكر إفضالها

    And I continue to mention their merit

    And I thank their favors

  37. بكم يُستغاث إذا ما الخطوب

    أهالت على الخلق أهوالها

    With how many in times of hardship

    When horrors beset the people with their intensity

  38. فكنتُم من النَّاس أقطابها

    وكنْتُم من النَّاس أبدالها

    You were the people’s mainstays

    And their substitutes among all people

  39. فَلَو خَلَتِ الأرض من مثلكم

    لزُلْزِلَتْ الأرض زلزالها

    And if the earth were devoid of your like

    The earth would shake with a massive quake

  40. أبا مصطفى أَنْتَ صوبُ الغمام

    ويا ربَّما فُقْتَ هطالها

    O Father of Mustafa, you are the rain clouds

    Cloaking thereby what you pour forth

  41. وقد نَفَقَتْ فيك سوق القريض

    وكان نوالُك دَلاّلها

    The market of poetry exhausted itself on you

    And your gifts were its intermediaries

  42. ولما بَلَغْتُ المنى في العُلى

    وبَلَّغْتُ نفسي آمالها

    And when I attained my utmost hopes

    And delivered myself to its highest aspirations

  43. أتَتْك النقابة تسعى إليك

    تجرُّ من التيه أذيالَها

    The leadership came seeking you

    Dragging the trains of its gowns

  44. وألْقَتْ إليكَ مقاليدها

    وأبْدَتْ لعزّك إذلالها

    And surrendered its reins to you

    Manifesting to your honor its submission

  45. وراثة آبائك الطاهرين

    فما أحَدٌ غيرهم نالها

    A inherited from your pure forefathers

    None other than them attained it

  46. عليكم وفيكم ومنكم نرى

    وجوهَ السَّعادة إقبالها

    In you, through you and from you we see

    The aspects of good fortune turning

  47. إذا لم تكنْ أَنْتَ أهلاً لها

    من الأنجبين فمن ذا لها

    If you were not suited for it

    Among the excellent, who else could make claim?

  48. فقد نلتَ ما لم ينله سواك

    فضائل نشكر أفضالها

    So you attained what none other attained

    Merits for which we thank their Bountiful

  49. كلامك يشفي صدور الرِّجال

    ويرضي الملوكَ وعمّالها

    Your words heal the breasts of men

    And please kings and their officials

  50. وحيثُ أخلَّت بها خُلَّةٌ

    سَدَدْتَ برأيك إخلالها

    And however faults creep into it

    Your sound opinion corrects their imbalance

  51. وكم يدٍ لك في الصالحات

    سَبَقْتَ من البرّ أمثالها

    And how many a hand stretched forth

    Have you preceded in benevolence?

  52. وإنْ أغْلَقَتْ بابها المكرمات

    فإنَّك تَفْتَحُ أقفالها

    And if the door of favors closes

    Then you open its locks
