I asked you about our dwellings in Najd
And those far and wide open spaces
The clouds abundantly watered them
Quenching the surrounding regions
Did the thymes or other wild plants grow
And fill the air with the fragrance so fine?
Did the anemones smile with cheeks
Blushing over the meadows' laughter?
Did the doves court them with an eloquence
Fluent upon the highland?
How could I forget people most noble
Whom I hope I meet and greet?
Did I remember my early friends
My drinking-friends in times long past?
The abode of my childhood and land of Wajd
Where my despair and hope were born
My heart is almost winging with longing
To those dwellings, O Hudhaim, with no wings!
