1. O radiant moon—

    —and O tender, supple bough!

  2. I marvel indeed at my passion for you:

    It is a wondrous thing.

  3. Eyes bleed with their tears because of it,

    And hearts burn.

  4. Why, when I called you to listen,

Do you neither listen nor answer?

  5. If my sin is that

I adore you, then I shall not repent.

  6. O full moon, neither waning

Nor sunset has gained its desire of you.

  7. Visit me when the watchman is heedless;

Perhaps the watchman will be heedless.

  8. And show compassion to a wasted lover, alarmed

When you shun him, and filled with doubt—

  9. A passionate lover, stricken in his very soul,

    Whose tears pour down forever.

  10. Do you know what lies beneath these ribs?

    A heart's core melting away.

  11. Alas! How have I been smitten

By one in whom I have no share!

  12. The physician is helpless—and what a malady

Lies in the heart, making it throb!

  13. How can passion be cured

In love, if the physician is helpless?

  14. One whose beloved is his affliction

Has no cure but the beloved.
