Why must I part from a companion each day,
Whom the strokes of fate have cracked?
I see my loved ones scattered,
Tossed by the hands of loss far and wide.
The abodes of the noble are empty,
In them only bones of the eminent lie.
The pious bid farewell in hushed tones,
Bows lowered, voices raised.
After you, my ears are deaf even to duty,
And the rope of hope is severed.
O kindest of people, whom I knew
Noble in nature and deeds.
Had I known regret for what is past
I'd have regretted what went by.
I'm tired of life and weary,
Prolonged exile I no longer desire.
Since the trusted one is gone, he
Who made mountains seem firmly rooted.
I've lost through him gems and gains,
Bounties, spoils and gifts.
I looked upon the living with a knower's eye
After him, and found them dead.
