1. ما قَضَيْنا حَقًّا لرسْمٍ محيل

    ببكاءٍ على الدْيار طويلِ

    We did not fulfill the right to weep long

    For the abodes, out of desire

  2. يا رفيقي وصاحبي وخليلي

    قفْ بنا بين دارساتِ الطلول

    O my friend, companion, and confidant

    Stand with me among the tall date palms

  3. نَقْضِ حقّ البُكا لها والعويل

    فالمطايا وَهَتْ وأَنْتَ تراها

    To weep and wail their right

    For the camels are exhausted as you see

  4. يأكلُ السَّيْرُ ما ترى من ذراها

    قفْ بها كي ترتاحَ ممّا اعتراها

    The journey eats what you see of their thinness

    Stand with it so it can rest from what ailed it

  5. وأنخها قلائصاً قد عراها

    ما عرانا من الضنى والنحولِ

    Tie its reins, for the journey has exposed it

    That which has exposed us to misery and leanness

  6. إنَّ غِبَّ الغرام منذ امتطاها

    أطلقَ الوَخدُ والذميلُ خطاها

    The passion of love has gripped it since it rode it

    The cheeks and the wrists let its steps go

  7. خلّها من لغويها أنْ يطاها

    وأرِحها سُوَيْعَةً فمطاها

    Leave its nonsense that agitates it

    And rest it a little, for the journey has tried it

  8. قد دهى من وجيفها والذميلِ

    أصْبَحتْ بعدَ ريّها تتولّى

    It has become emaciated from its withers and wrists

    It proceeds after being watered to roll

  9. كبدا من غليلها النار تصلى

    علّها ما وَرَدَتْ ماءك عَلاّ

    A liver boiling with its bile, praying

    In hopes that your water has reached it

  10. واسقها من مَعين وجرةَ نهلا

    فعَساها تطفي لهيب الغليل

    Quench its thirst from a spring and urn of water

    Perhaps it will put out the flame of bile

  11. خَلّها لا عدمتَ ذا اليوم خلاّ

    إن تحاولْ بقطعك البيد وصلا

    Leave it today, may you never lack solitude

    If you try to cut your hand, it will seek connection

  12. وإذا سرتَ بالمطيِّ فمهلاّ

    وتَرَفَّقْ بها فيما هي إلاَّ

    When you walk with the mount, then go slowly

    And be gentle with it, for it is only

  13. عُدَّةً قد أعدَدْتُها للوصولِ

    فَسقى مربع الحِسان وجادَتْ

    Gear I have prepared for arrival

    So the square pool of goodness gave drink

  14. مُزُنٌ أحْسَنَتْ به وأجادَتْ

    تبلُغ النفسُ عنده ما أرادَتْ

    Pleasant pools from which it drank and gave drink

    The soul attains what it desires from it

  15. يا لمغنًى به الغواني تهادَتْ

    وخَلَتْ من مؤنّبٍ وعذولِ

    What bliss it is, for the lovesick and enamored

    Free of discomfort and arduous ascents

  16. كم لَهَوْنا بكلّ ظبي غريرِ

    وشَرِبْنا في كلّ رَوضٍ نضيرِ

    How we have sported with every antelope

    And drank in every blossoming meadow

  17. شمسَ راحٍ من كفّ بدرٍ منير

    وأُديرَتْ لنا كؤوسُ سرورِ

    The sun at rest from the grasp of a shining full moon

    And cups of joy were passed to us

  18. من ثغورٍ رضابها من شمولِ

    حبّذا أوْجُهٌ تروقُك وَصْفا

    From lips whose sips encompass kisses

    Beautiful faces that please you and purely describe

  19. وثغورٌ تحكي المدامةَ صِرْفا

    فالثنايا العِذاب تمنح رشفا

    Lips that speak of wine most purely

    For the dimples grant honor when they torture

  20. ومياهُ الجمالِ تقطرُ لُطفا

    فوقَ خدٍّ من الشباب أسيلِ

    And the waters of beauty drip gentleness

    Above a cheek of youth, smooth

  21. قد رَعَينا لذاذةَ العيشِ رغدا

    وطرِبْنا به مَراحاً ومَغْدى

    We have enjoyed the pleasures of life in bliss

    And with it we have lived blissfully

  22. في رياضٍ من المحاسن تندى

    وطيورُ الهَنا تغرِّدُ وَجْدا

    In gardens of beauty where the air is fragrant

    And the birds of bliss trill joyfully

  23. بهديرٍ مستعذبٍ وهديلِ

    يا لعيشٍ ما كانَ أمرى وأحلى

    With a pleasant murmur and sigh

    What a life it was, and how sweet!

  24. وزمانٍ من جوهر الرُّوحِ أغلى

    فالشبابُ الَّذي قَلَّص ظِلاّ

    What days of purest spirit and most precious

    For youth that stayed but briefly

  25. قد مضى وانقضى وفاتَ وَوَلّى

    كشموسٍ قد آذَنَتْ للأفولِ

    Has passed, ended, gone, and deserted

    Like a sun whose setting is foretold

  26. أينَ قومي لهم على النَّاس فخرُ

    وإباءٌ بأنْفِهِ مشمخرُّ

    Where are my people, proud among people

    With disdainful pride and loftiness

  27. قد دَهاهم من المنيّة أمرُ

    وتمطّى بساعدِ الغَدْرِ دهرُ

    Brought down by fate, which grinned wickedly

    As time bared its teeth, that traitor

  28. غالَ أهلَ النهى بأنياب غولِ

    كم كريمٍ لدى عذابٍ أليمِ

    Destiny seized the people of prohibition in the jaws of injustice

    How many generous souls have suffered pain

  29. ولئيمٍ من دهره في نعيمِ

    إنَّ دهراً عَدوَّ كلِّ كريم

    While many wicked enjoy bounty!

    Fate is indeed the enemy of the noble

  30. فهوَ سلمٌ لكلِّ فدمٍ لئيم

    وهو حربٌ لكلِّ حرِّ نبيلِ

    It is a ladder for every despicable villain

    And war upon every free, noble soul

  31. ساءنا الدهرُ مأخذاً ونزاعا

    واتّصالاً وفرقةً واجتماعا

    Fate has treated us badly, scheming and competing

    Connecting and separating, gathering and dispersing

  32. غادرٌ باسطٌ لغَدرٍ ذراعا

    ولَكَمْ مَدَّ للخيانةِ باعا

    A traitor, hands outstretched for betrayal

    How far it has extended its hand to treachery

  33. رَدَّ عنها الحجى بطرف كليلِ

    عَمَّ سوحي حال الزمان وخصّا

    Turning from them the covering of discretion by a slight gesture

    My state in these times, when considered deeply

  34. وأرى فيه كلّما زِدْتُ نَقْصا

    لا تظنَّن أنّها تُستقصى

    Seems to me to decrease, the more I increase

    Think not that they can be completely fathomed

  35. فأحاديثُ دهرِنا ليسَ تُحصى

    خلّ عن شرحها العريضِ الطويلِ

    Our stories in these days cannot be counted

    Leave off explaining them in detail

  36. كمْ أمورٍ لدَهْرِنا مهلكاتِ

    لاحقاتِ أبناءه مدركات

    So many deadly matters has our time

    Pursuing its sons and overtaking them

  37. زَمَنٌ ظلّ أهلُه في شكاةِ

    كم له في الكرام من فتكاتِ

    An era whose people live in worry

    How many noble souls has it killed

  38. كلَّ آن يسطو بأمرٍ مهولِ

    إنَّ هذي الأيام منذ ابتداها

    A new disaster appears every instant

    To attack the generous souls

  39. قَلَّ ما تَمْنَحُ الكرامَ نداها

    ما استَقَرَّتْ بريّها وصداها

    Indeed, since the beginning of these days

    They seldom grant the generous their brilliance or echo

  40. والليالي لا تستقرُّ مداها

    كلَّ يوم تأتي بحال محلولِ

    They did not settle in comfort and calm

    Nights do not settle in their spans

  41. نرتجي الفوزَ في بلوغ أمانِ

    بزمانٍ يَعِزُّ كلَّ مُهانِ

    Each day brings a new dissolved state

    We hope for success in attaining security

  42. ما ثنى عِطفَه لحرٍّ مُصانِ

    ليتَ شعري ما يرتجى من زمان

    In a time that respects every despised soul

    That does not refuse kindness to free souls

  43. عَطفُه للكرامِ كالمستحيلِ

    كيف نلتذُّ في الحياة وُجودا

    I wish I knew what can be hoped from a time

    Whose kindness to the generous is impossible

  44. إذ نرى حيثُما التَفَتْنا فقيدا

    لك يكنْ طيبُ عيشنا محمودا

    How can we delight in life or rejoice

    When we see, wherever we turn, loss

  45. ومتى نستطيبُ عيشاً رغيدا

    والمنايا تحدو بنا للرحيلِ

    Your life would not be good if you never enjoyed

    And when can we enjoy a pleasant life

  46. إنَّما هذه الحياة ابتلاءُ

    ولغوبٌ وشِقْوَةٌ وعَناءُ

    While fate comes to us for departure

    This life is but a tribulation

  47. ثم قد يُعقِبُ الوجودَ فناءُ

    والرزايا مع المنايا بلاءُ

    And vain toil, misery, and sorrow

    Followed by extinction of existence

  48. وعظيمُ البلاء رفع الرذيل

    فالبلاءُ الشديدُ أنْ يُستَعاذا

    And calamities with death are tribulation

    The greatest tribulation is to raise what is base

  49. بالذي لمْ يكنْ لعَمري مَعاذا

    أو يكونُ الدنيُّ فينا ملاذا

    The harshest tribulation is to seek refuge

    In one who has never been a refuge

  50. وبلاءٌ أشدُّ من ذا وهذا

    ذلُّ حُرٍّ إلى لئيمٍ بخيلِ

    Or the lowly become a shelter

    Even worse than this or that

  51. ما أراحَتْ يوماً من النَّاس حيًّا

    بلْ أساءتْ إليه مَوتاً ومحيا

    Is the humiliation of the noble to the mean of spirit

    It has never eased a living soul

  52. نحنُ نبغي في هذه الدَّار بُقيا

    ومضِرٌّ بنا البقاءُ بدنيا

    Rather, it has done it harm in life and death

    We seek eternal life in the abode

  53. غَدَرَتْ قبلَنا بآل الرسولِ

    لأناسٍ عَلَوْا فخاراً ومجدا

    Yet our remaining in the world is harmful

    It betrayed the People of the House before us

  54. وأباً ماجداً كريماً وجدّا

    كيف كانت إذ ذاك خصماً ألدّا

    Noble, glorious people of great deeds and fathers

    How harshly hostile it was to them then

  55. ما رَعَتْ فيهم ذماماً وعهدا

    وحمى المستجير والمستنيل

    It did not respect their pact or promise

    And protect the seeker of refuge and the despairing

  56. يا نجوماً في كلِّ بَرّ وبحر

    هاديات الأنام في كلّ عَصْرِ

    O stars, in every land and sea

    Guiding mankind in every age

  57. يا بدوراً في حالكٍ مكفهرّ

    شَتَّتْ شملَهُم وكانوا حماة

    O full moons in your rising

    You have dispersed their unity, and they were protectors

  58. وهداةً إلى سواء السبيل

    خيرُ من حَلَّ بقعةً ووطاها

    And guides to the clear path

    Better to settle on a plot of land and inhabit it

  59. قد كشفْتُم عن العيون غطاها

    وحميْتُم ممَّا يروع سطاها

    You have uncovered what covers the eyes

    And protected them from what shakes its ground

  60. يا بني أحمدٍ ويا آل طه

    يا هداة الورى ومأوى الدخيل

    O sons of Ahmed, People of the Cloak

    Guides of mankind, refuge of the outcast

  61. بولائي لكم قديماً وحبّي

    أنا أرجو النجاةَ من كلّ كربِ

    By my long loyalty and love of you

    I hope for salvation from every hardship

  62. يا شفائي إذا اعتَلَلْتُ وطبّي

    ضِقْتُ ذَرعاً من عِلَّةٍ بَرَّحَتْ بي

    My healing when I am sick, my doctor

    When an illness wearies me, you are my cure

  63. ودوائي أنتم وبرءُ العليل

    عن خلوصِ الولاءِ صِدقُ مقالي

    And my health, recovery of the sick

    The sincerity of my loyalty and word

  64. في طفوليَّتي وحالِ اكتهالي

    لم تغيِّرْه حادثاتُ الليالي

    In my youth and time of maturity

    The nights' events have not changed it

  65. صرتُ شيخاً وما تَغَيَّر حالي

    عن ولائي لكم بِصدقِ المقولِ

    I have become old but my state

    Is unchanged in loyalty, in truthful speech

  66. تركَتْني الأيامُ من غير جِرم

    حاملاً عِبءَ كلّ همٍّ وغمِّ

    The days have left me, blameless

    Bearing the burden of every care and sorrow

  67. حيث فَقْدُ الشبابِ انحل جسمي

    وأنا اليوم شابَ رأسي وعظمي

    Where the loss of youth has sapped my body

    Today I am old of head and bone

  68. أوْهَنَتْه أثْقال وِزرٍ ثقيل

    إنَّ ضُعْفَ القُوى وفقدانَ عَوني

    Weakened by the weight of heavy burdens

    The weakness of my strength and loss of aid

  69. قد أحالا من بينَ قَصدي وبيني

    طَعَنَتْ في مضاضة العيش شنِّي

    Have prevented my purpose and me from it

    The bitterness of life has pierced me

  70. وانقضى العمرُ كلُّه بالتمنِّي

    واتّباعِ الهوى بقالٍ وقيلِ

    And my age has passed in wishing

    And following desires in saying and speaking

  71. أنْتُم مَطلَبي وأنْتم مرادي

    وعَليكم بَعدَ الإله اعتمادي

    You are my pursuit and my desire

    And in you I trust after God

  72. فإذا كانَ بَعْدَ بدئي معادي

    حبّكم يا بني الوصيّ عتادي

    So if after my beginning comes my return

    Your love, O sons of the successor, is my habit

  73. في معادي عند الإله الجليلِ

    قَرَّبَتْني منكُمْ دنوًّا بقربِ

    In my return to God, the Exalted

    A relationship in glory by the grace of my Lord

  74. نِسْبَةٌ في الجميل من فضل ربِّي

    حينَ أدعى ما بين قومي وصحبي

    Has drawn me closer to you in seeking nearness

    When between my people and companions I claim

  75. أنْتُمْ أَنْتُم الجميلُ وحَسْبي

    بينَ قومي أُدعى بابن الجميل

    You, you are the beautiful, and enough for me

    Among my people I am called the son of the beautiful
