While my eyes shed copious tears

For the one whose love rends me,

For which enamored being does he show kindness,

While anguish lurks within his soul?

He hides his secret with patience until

Tears of sorrow reveal his secret.

Obedient tears of a noble man,

    While patience stubbornly disobeys.

He says, when I mention to him a beauty,

"Each has his faith, and lovers have theirs."

    Eyes have ravaged me until

I am crazed, for passion is naught but madness.

How can you know what slender waists have stabbed

With glances, and what eyes have rent?

This was slain by her, and that

Wounded by her, pierced and bleeding.

She is gentle, yet I complain of her, so often

Cruel to me, while I remain tender.

    Though slanderers turn from her,

I remain hers though fortunes depart.

For those impassioned by eyes in Najd

On the morrow of separation, when the fires die down,

    Hearts held ransom,

    Those ransoms never reclaimed.

No patience remains for an absent one,

No tear remains for a secret kept.
