1. لفُقْدانِ عبد الواحد الدَّمع قد جرى

    وأَجرى نجيعاً لمدامع أحمرا

    The tears of Abdel Wahid flowed

    And copiously ran down his cheeks

  2. تذكَّرته من بعد حول فأَذْرَفَتْ

    عليه جفوني حسرةً وتذكّرا

    I remembered him after some time and my eyelids

    Shed over him regrets and remembrances

  3. فكفكفْتُ من عيني بوادر عبرة

    وما خِلْتُها لولاه أنْ تتحدَّرا

    So I held back the first signs of lament

    From my eyes, had it not been for him they would have streamed down

  4. أَقامَ عليَّ العيدُ في النَّحر مأتماً

    وأَظهرَ ما قد كانَ في القلبِ مضمرا

    The feast stood over me like a funeral

    And revealed what had been hidden in my heart

  5. لئنْ غيَّبوهُ في التُّراب وأَظلَمَتْ

    معالم كانت تفضح الصبح مسفرا

    Though they buried him in the soil and the landmarks

    That illuminated the dawn were darkened

  6. فما أَغمدوا في الترب إلاَّ مهنَّداً

    ولا حملوا في النَّعش إلاَّ غضنفرا

    They only sheathed in the earth a drawn sword

    And only carried in the bier a brave hero

  7. أُصِبنا وأيم الله كلّ مصيبة

    بأَروع أبكى الأَجنبين ولا مِرا

    We were afflicted, by God, with every misfortune

    That made the closest one cry and the distant one wail

  8. فيا لك من رزءٍ أصاب وحادث

    ألمَّ وخطب في الجلاميد أثَّرا

    Oh what a calamity that has befallen and what a tragedy

    That has distressed the stony hills and left its mark

  9. تفقَّدْتُ منه وابل القطر ممطراً

    وفارقتُ منه طلعة البدر نيّرا

    I missed from him torrents of rain pouring down

    And parted from him the radiant full moon

  10. وما كانَ أبهى منه في النَّاس منظراً

    ولا كانَ أزكى منه في النَّاس مخبرا

    There was none more beautiful to behold among people

    Nor was there any purer in speech than him among people

  11. أفي كلّ يومٍ للمنايا رزيَّةٌ

    تكاد لها الأَكبادُ أن تتفطَّرا

    Does death have a calamity every day

    That nearly ruptures the livers with sorrow

  12. تهيِّجُ أحزاناً وتبعثُ زفرةً

    وتُرسلُ في فقد الأَحبَّة منذرا

    It stirs sorrows and elicits a moan

    And sends warnings of losing loved ones

  13. تكدّر أخوان الصَّفا في انبعاثها

    وأيّ صفاءٍ لامرئٍ ما تكدَّرا

    It troubles the sincere friends with its advent

    And what serenity remains for anyone when it is troubled

  14. أجلُّ مصاب الدَّهر فَقْدُكَ ماجداً

    ودفْنُكَ أجداث الأَكارم في الثَّرى

    The greatest affliction of fate was losing you, Majid

    And burying you, the noblest, in the soil

  15. وقولكَ مات الأَكرمون فلم نَجِدْ

    زعيماً إذا ما أورد الأَمر أصدرا

    And your saying the generous have died, so we did not find

    A leader when matters required one

  16. وما حيلة الإِنسان فيما ينوبه

    إذا كانَ أمر الله فيه مقدَّرا

    What can man do against what befalls him

    When God's decree regarding him is determined

  17. وهبكَ اتَّقيتَ الرِّزءَ حيث أريته

    فكيف بمن يأتيك من حيث لا ترى

    You feared tribulations whenever they appeared

    But how about those whom tribulations come upon unbeknownst

  18. ونحنُ مع المقدور نجري إلى مدًى

    وليس لنا في الأَمر أن نتخيَّرا

    And we flow with what is destined for a period

    Having no choice in the matter but compliance

  19. إذا لم تُمَتَّع بالبقاء حياتنا

    فلا خيرَ في هذي الحياة الَّتي نرى

    If our lives are not adorned with longevity

    Then no goodness is there in this life that we see

  20. على ذاهبٍ منَّا يرغم أُنوفِنا

    نُعالِجُ حُزْناً أو نموت فنُعذرا

    Over everyone of us who passes we resentfully mourn

    Grieving or dying, so we are excused

  21. وما أنا بالناسي صنائعه الَّتي

    تذكّرنيه كلّ آنٍ تذكّرا

    And I am not one to forget his qualities

    That fully remind me, time and again

  22. فأُثني عليه الخير حيًّا وميّتاً

    وأشكره ما دمتُ حيًّا مذكرا

    So I will thank him, alive or dead

    And appreciate him as long as I live and remember

  23. وإنِّي متى ضَوَّعْتُ طيب ثنائه

    فتَقْتُ به مِسكاً وأَشممْتُ عنبرا

    And whenever I perfume myself with the fragrance of his virtues

    I scent musk and ambergris

  24. تبارك من أنشاكَ يا ابن مبارك

    جميلاً من المعروف لن يتنكَّرا

    Blessed is He who created you, O son of the blessed

    Beautiful in doing good, never denying it

  25. وما زلت حتَّى اختاركَ الله طاهراً

    فكُنتَ ماء المُزن عذباً مطهَّرا

    You remained immaculate until God chose you

    And so you were pure, cleansing water

  26. إلى رحمة الرَّحمن والفوز بالرّضا

    سبَقت وما أسبقت فينا التَّصبّرا

    You preceded to the mercy of the Compassionate and triumph in contentment

    And your steadfastness in beautiful patience did not precede ours

  27. وما كانَ بالصَّبرِ الجميل تمسُّكي

    ألا إنَّ ذاك الصَّبر منفصم العُرى

    Alas, that patience has broken ties

    The days suffice as lessons and insights

  28. كفى المرء في الأَيَّام موعظةً بها

    وتبصرة فيها لمن قد تبصَّرا

    And our souls are destined to meet death

    Though we lived an epoch or more

  29. ولا بدَّ أنْ تلقى المنون نفوسَنا

    ولو أنَّنا عشْنا زماناً وأَعصرا

    The nights never ceased to stab us

    With their crescents, time and again

  30. وإنَّ اللَّيالي لم تزلْ بمرورها

    تسلُّ علينا بالأهلَّة خنجرا

    Do our hopes make us covet eternal life

    In every unreal tale and fiction?

  31. أتُطْمِعُنا آمالُنا ببقائنا

    بكلّ حديثٍ ما هنالك مفترى

    Death, you spare no multitude of people

    Herding them in panic and terror

  32. وإنَّ المنايا لا أبا لك لم تَدَعْ

    من النَّاس سرباً ما أُريع وأذعرا

    It seized the heavy clouds of the House of Ghumayr

    And came upon Kisra kings and Caesar

  33. أغارت على الأَقيال من آل حميرٍ

    وجاءتْ على كسرى الملوك وقيصرا

    It was not barred by sturdy citadels

    Nor did it reveal what dangers had been hidden

  34. فما منعت عنها حصون منيعة

    ولا كشفتْ من فادح الخطب ما عرا

    Though departed from our sights by his death

    He still blazes in our thoughts, kindled

  35. لئنْ غابَ عن أبصارنا بوفاتِه

    فما زالَ في الأَفكار منَّا مفوَّرا

    We lost you like losing shade in the heat

    So no spring remains except what has flowed

  36. فقدناك فقدان الزُّلال على الظّما

    فلا منهل إلاَّ ومورده جرى

    You were in God's cause not a miser

    Of righteous deeds throughout the world

  37. ألا في سبيل الله ما كنت صانعاً

    من البرّ والمعروف في سائر الورى

    For God, you fed the hungry

    And clothed and gave shelter to the bare

  38. وكنتَ لوجه الله تشبعُ جائعاً

    وتُطعم مسكيناً وتكسو لمن عرى

    So I beseech God to send showers upon you

    Whenever the rain clouds unleash their downpour

  39. وإنِّي لأستسقي لك الله وابلاً

    متى استمطر الصَّادي عزاليه أمطرا

    To pour over the grave sheltering you

    And musk diffuses from your sweet scent

  40. يصوب على قبر يضمّك لَحْدُهُ

    ويَسْطَعُ مسكاً من أريجك أذفرا

    The well gave you life water every night

    And the early cloud drops quenched you

  41. سقاك الحيا المنهلُّ كلّ عشيَّةٍ

    وروَّاك من قطر الغمام مبكرا

    You were to the thirsty sweeter than a spring

    And were a pouring rain with generosity

  42. فقد كنتَ للظمآن أعذبَ منهلٍ

    وقد كنتَ غيثاً بالمكارم ممطرا

    Poetry flourished and prospered through you

    Purchasing praise and glory from you

  43. وقد كانَ فيك الشّعر ينفُقُ سوقه

    لديك ويبتاع الثناء ويشترا

    It pained me that merit became unmarketable

    And the glory of generosity after you was barren

  44. وقد ساءني أن أصبح الفضل كاسداً

    وأصبح مغنى الجود بعدك مقفرا

    The fires of the dwellings died without a lighter

    No generosity lits any fires or dwellings

  45. وقد خمدتْ نار القِرى دون طارق

    فلا جود للجدوى ولا نار للقرى

    The flowing glory in every aspiration went astray

    Reined away from lofty goals

  46. وغُدر ساري الحمد في كلِّ مهمهٍ

    من الأرض مصروف العنان عن السّرى

    So neither a fertile land became fertile

    Nor did a meadow bloom, frequented and flowering

  47. فلا أُخْصِبَتْ أرض الخصيب ولا زهى

    بها الرّبع مأنوساً ولا الرَّوض مزهرا

    You were my clear morning from your forehead

    And you made my night radiant from your smile

  48. لقد كانَ صُبحي من جبينك واضحاً

    وقد كانَ ليلي من محيَّاك مقمرا

    If only I knew, with calamities numerous

    If only I knew, who could possibly know

  49. فيا ليتَ شعري والحوادث جمَّةٌ

    ويا ليتني أدري ومن ذا الَّذي درى

    The beauties of that time, how they changed

    And the bloom of that beauty, how it altered

  50. محاسن ذاك العصر كيف تبَدَّلتْ

    ورونق ذاك الحُسن كيفَ تغيَّرا

    Your hands were long in reaching high

    Seizing glory and pride in the heights

  51. وكانتْ لك الأَيدي طوالاً إلى العُلى

    تناول مجداً في المعالي ومفخرا

    How many coveted them and craved them

    Stretching their arms long but falling short

  52. فكم راغب فيها وكم طامع بها

    أمدَّ لها الباعَ الطويلَ فقصَّرا

    From your gracious acts cladding the free with honour

    Crowning them with your hands and with necklaces

  53. ومن مكرمات تملكُ الحرَّ رقَّةً

    تطوّق من أيديك يداً ومنحرا

    From your virtuous traits authoring a tradition

    With which I wrote the glory on its forehead in prose

  54. ومن حسنات تخلق الدهر جدَّةً

    كتبتُ بها في جبهته المجد أسطرا

    How many impoverished you changed their hardship to ease

    Never ceasing to facilitate good deeds

  55. وكم مُعسرٍ بدَّلت بالعُسْر يُسْرَه

    وما زلت للفعل الجميل ميسّرا

    If helpers could save from doom

    We would have helped you, with ample support

  56. ولو كانت الأَنصار تُنجي من الرَّدى

    نصرناكَ إذ وافاك نصراً مؤزّرا

    How many teary eyes have streamed over you

    And how many inflamed hearts nearly ignited

  57. فكم مقلةٍ أذْرَتْ عليك دموعها

    ومُهجة صادٍ أوشكَتْ أن تسعّرا

    How many livers, burnt with anguish for you

    Nearly ruptured when you were recalled

  58. وكم كبدٍ حرَّى يحرّقها الأَسى

    تكادُ على ذكراك أنْ تتَفَطَّرا

    The night that elicits from me a moan over you

    It would be wrong for my eyes to forget it

  59. وليلة تُذكيني بذكرك زفرةً

    حرامٌ على عيني بها سنة الكرى

    May God's peace be upon you whenever a pilgrim decries

    And exalts God in those lands, declaring His glory

  60. عليك سلام الله ما حجَّ محرمٌ

    وهلَّلَ في تلك البقاع وكبَّرا
