1. أكْرِمْ بطيف خيالكم من زائرِ

    ما زار إلاَّ مُؤْذِناً ببشائر

    Honor me with the shade of your imagination, whenever a visitor comes

    He comes only as a harbinger of good news

  2. وافى على بُعد المزار وربما

    بلَّ الغليل بغائب من حاضر

    He reached the shrine from afar, and perhaps

    Quenched the thirst with one absent yet present

  3. والنجم يصرف للغروب عنانه

    حتَّى بصرت به كليل الناظر

    The star turns its bridle towards sunset

    Until I see it twinkling to the weary-eyed viewer

  4. وكأنَّ ضوءَ في أثر الدجى

    إظهارُ حُجّةِ مسلمٍ للكافر

    As if the light in the darkness’ wake

    Reveals the proof of a Muslim to the unbeliever

  5. لا تحسبوا أنّي سلوت غرامكم

    هجراً فبعداً للمحب الهاجر

    Think not that I forgot your love

    No! Woe to the lover who departs

  6. جمرات ذاك الوجد حشو جوانحي

    وجمال ذاك الوجه ملء نواظري

    Embers of that passion fill my chest

    And the beauty of that face fills my eyes

  7. أعِدِ ادّكارك يوم مجتمع الهوى

    إنِّي لأصبو عند ذكر الذاكر

    Remember the day love brought us together

    When the reminiscent recalls, I yearn

  8. أيام نرفل بالنعيم ونصطلي

    نار المدامة من عصير العاصر

    Days when we revel in bliss and bask

    In the wine’s fire from the squeezer’s press

  9. ولقد ذكرت العيش وهو كأنَّما

    برزت محاسنه بروض ناضر

    I recalled living as if

    Its charms appeared in a blossoming meadow

  10. ومليكة الأفراح في أقداحها

    قد رصعت تيجانها بجواهر

    The queen of joys in her cups

    Adorned her crowns with gems

  11. صبغت بإكسير الحياة لجينها

    فكأنها ملكت صناعة جابر

    She dyed her smooth cheeks with the elixir of life

    As if she mastered Jabir's craft

  12. خلع العذار لها النزيف وبان في

    جنح الظلام منادمي ومسامري

    The purest dignity graced her

    My boon companions and fellow drinkers

  13. متجاهر يهفو إلى لذاته

    أحبب إلى اللذات من متجاهر

    Boldly lusting for pleasure

    More beloved to me than the boastful

  14. ذهبت لذاذات الصبا وتصرّمت

    أوقات أُنْسِكَ في الزمان الغابر

    The pleasures of youth have gone and the times of your company

    Perished in days gone by

  15. وإذا امرؤ فقد الشباب فما له

    في اللهو بعد مشيبة من عاذر

    When a man loses his youth, what excuse has he

    To frolic after graying with age?

  16. ولقد أقول لطامع برجوعها

    كيف اقتناصُك للغزال النافر

    I say to one greedily seeking its return

    How can you catch the escaping gazelle?

  17. لله ما أروى بنا متلفت

    يوم الفحيم بجيد أحوى الناظر

    By God, I cannot quench the burning thirst

    On the day of reckoning with a gazing brow

  18. والركب مرتحل بكل غريرة

    تبني الكناس بغاب ليث خادر

    The caravan travels with every flirt

    Who builds a nest in the lair of a lurking lion

  19. أرأيت ما فعل الوداع بمقلة

    ما قرّحت بالدمع غير محاجري

    Have you seen what farewell did to my eyelids?

    Nothing but my tears could soothe them

  20. وجَرَتْ على نَسَقٍ مدامعُ عبرة

    شبّهتها باللؤلؤ المتناثر

    Tears of sadness flowed like pearls scattered

    Bidding farewell to the beauties one eve

  21. شيّعت هاتيك الظعون عشية

    ورجعت بعدهم بصفقة خاسر

    Only to return after them bankrupt

    That day of farewell was no mere rest stop

  22. لا كانَ يوم وداعهم من موقف

    وقف المتيم فيه وقفة حائر

    Where the lovesick paused, confused

    A tear chases the last, and separation

  23. والدمع يلحق آخراً في أوَّلٍ

    والبين يرفق أوَّلاً في آخر

    Accompanies the first in the end

    Who can support me in my torment of passion?

  24. مَن ناصري منكم على مضض الهوى

    هيهات ليس على الهوى من ناصر

    Alas, passion has no aiders

    Blame me not, for love has a case

  25. لا تعذلنّ فللغرام قضية

    سَدَّت عليَّ مسامعي ومناظري

    That has silenced my ears and sights

    O Saad! When I recalled my eastern fever

  26. يا سعد حين ذكرت شرقيّ الحمى

    هل كانَ قلبي في جناحي طائر

    Did my heart flutter like a bird in flight?

    I confessed to you a secret I hid

  27. كشفت لديك سريرة أخفيتها

    فعرفت ثمة باطني من ظاهري

    So you knew my essence from my semblance

    After that, even imagination deserted me

  28. وجفا الخيال ولم يزرني بعدها

    أين الخيال من الكئيب الساهر

    Where is imagination for the sleepless gloomy one?

    O people of this neighborhood! How can I endure

  29. يا أهل هذا الحي كيف تصبري

    عنكم ومن لي بالفؤاد الصابر

    Being away from you - who calms my restless heart?

    I was elated at your memory, as if I was

  30. ولقد طربت لذكركم فكأنني

    بغداد يوم قدوم عبد القادر

    Baghdad upon Abdul Qadir's arrival

    He came from Damascus to Iraq with a rising

  31. وافى من الشام العراق بطلعة

    شِمْنا بها برق الحيا المتقاطر

    Whose lightning we sensed refreshing the rain

    Iraq and its people became jubilant at his rising

  32. فَزَها بطلعته العراق وأهله

    والروض يزهو بالسحاب الماطر

    And the meadow blossomed from the pouring clouds

    Before that came tidings never witnessed before

  33. وتقدمته قبل ذاك بشارة

    ما جاءت البشرى لها بنظائر

    No herald ever brought such great news

    He came and illuminated every dark crevice

  34. وافى فأشرق كل فجٍّ مظلم

    فيه وأحيا كل فضل داثر

    Reviving every faded glory

    Joy covered the town’s nobility

  35. وضفا السرور على أفاضل بلدة

    سرُّوا بمحياه البهي الباهر

    Who rejoiced at his shining radiant face

    I greeted the eminent newcomer

  36. نعموا بوجه للنعيم نضارة

    فيه وقرّت فيه عين الناظر

    Among the generous and great

    You shook Damascus’ authority over me

  37. بأغرَّ أبيضَ تنجلي بجبينه

    ظلمات سجف ستائر لدياجر

    A mother who bore the barren era

    You sharpened your resolve to come here boldly

  38. يبتاع بالمال الثناء وإنَّما

    في سوقه ربحت تجارة تاجر

    With a will like a piercing sword

    You rose like the shining moon

  39. صعب على صعب الخطوب وجائر

    أبداً على جور الزمان الجائر

    Beaming with brilliant beauty

    You chose the noblest dwelling in Baghdad

  40. إنْ كانَ ذا البأس الشديد فرأفة

    فيه أرقّ من النسيم الحاجري

    Among the best of men and the virtuous elite

    Settle into its vast dignity and spaciousness

  41. حُيّيتَ ما بين الورى من قادم

    ونعمت بين أكارم وأكابر

    In this vast abode and prosperous home

    Its foundations are built properly

  42. قد زعزعت بك عن دمشق أبوَّةً

    نتجت به أمُّ الزمان العاقر

    With towering pillars and pride

    If you grow tired, after this is rest

  43. وشحذت عزمك للمجيء غراره

    ولرب عزم كالحسام الباتر

    Or if they speak, it brings no harm

    You will attain wishes beyond imagining

  44. وطلعت كالقمر المنير إذا بدا

    زاه بأنوار المحاسن زاهر

    That never occurred to the mind

    May your Lord spare you evil enemies

  45. واخترتَ من بغداد أشرفَ منزلٍ

    ما بين خير عصابة وأخاير

    Who rode arrogance and vainly persisted

    You were greeted on earth as an eminent newcomer

  46. فانزل على سَعَة الوقار ورحبه

    في منزل رحب وبيت عامر

    And I delighted between nobles and dignitaries

    With you I boast among the people

  47. بُنيت قواعده على ما ينبغي

    من سؤدد سامي العلى ومفاخر

    As they say 'By God, their praiser is a poet!'

    If I came with every poem a maiden

  48. فلئن تعبت فبعد هذا راحة

    أو قيل ما قالوا فليس بضائر

    Of poem-gems, an early dawn

    Adorned it as if it were a necklace

  49. ولسوف تبلغ بعد ذاك مآرباً

    ما ليس يخطر بعضها بالخاطر

    I decorated with praising you and bracelets

    If reciters vied over it, I'd deem it

  50. وكفاك ربك شر كل معاند

    ركب الغرور فلا لعاً للعاثر

    Spirits of the gentle breeze's breath

    I cannot fully thank your kindness

  51. أبني جميلٍ إنَّني بجميلكم

    ميزت بين الناس دون معاصري

    But prolong it with imperfect range

    You have provided me pure springs among the people

  52. إنِّي لأفخر فيكم فيقال لي

    لله شاعر مجدهم من شاعر

    Until I saw my sources flow from the stranger

    Those hands of yours whose beautiful praise

  53. فلو أنَّني آتي بكل قصيدة

    عذراء من غرر القصائد باكر

    And thanking by the grateful will never deplete

    O beautiful people! Through you I was distinguished

  54. وجلوتها فكأنما هي غادة

    حلّيتها من مدحكم بأساور

    Above my peers

    I boast in you, and it is said to me

  55. وإذا تناشدها الرواة حسبتها

    أرواح أنفاس النسيم العاطر

    "By God, their glorifying poet is a poet!"

    If only I came with every poem

  56. لم أقضِ حق الشكر من إحسانكم

    لكن أُطاوِلُه بباع قاصر

    An unsullied pearl from the poem-gems’ womb

    And polished it until it shined

  57. عذبت لديكم في الأنام مواردي

    حتَّى رأيت من الغريب مصادري

    Adorned with your praise like bracelets

    If reciters recited it by heart

  58. هاتيكم الأيدي الَّتي لا ينقضي

    مدح الجميل لها وشكر الشاكر

    I'd deem it the fragrant breeze's soul
