1. You came as goodness comes, after a long absence,

    As a full moon, once hidden, rises, shines, and clears the dark.

  2. You approached as all happiness itself approaches us;

    May God welcome your face as you draw near.

  3. You were like a raincloud’s downpour finding parched earth,

    While through you we were like a thirsty man finding a watering place.

  4. We glimpsed the radiance of hope’s lightning—no false flash;

    It beamed forth, drawing rain from the smiling cloud.

  5. You journeyed from land to land,

    For it is the nature of moons to move from place to place.

  6. And you came to Baghdad to remove the affliction within it,

    Until its condition returns to what it was at first.

  7. Welcome and ease be yours for as long as you remain—most warmly welcome,

    Honored amid the realms of glory, held in reverence:

  8. The most truthful in speech of all who have come from Rome,

    And one whom the Sultan dispatched as his watchful agent and envoy;

  9. A faithful guardian over the officials, forsaking the oppressor,

    Supporting the oppressed and rescuing the afflicted.

  10. So, on the morning when all the people rejoiced, we said:

    Perhaps these circumstances will now be transformed.

  11. And beneath the subtle cadence of our words—were there no restraints—

    Lie fine points not hidden from anyone who reflects.

  12. How often God sends relief after hardship!

    With that hope, we consoled ourselves by fond wishes.

  13. For even if the inquiry has not improved our condition, we remain

    Scattered—our affairs inept and their protection frail.

  14. Whoever regards things with the gaze of one who knows

    Sees them before him both as a whole and in detail.

  15. For an intelligent man, the bare text of a hint is enough;

    He perceives its explanation as though it were set out at length.

  16. The Sultan singled you out only because he knew

    That you would neither accept bribes nor be bought.

  17. This is of his bounty—and God rewards bounty with bounty—

    A favor bestowed upon us by the Commander of the Faithful,

  18. So that the coming of a rightly guided man might drive oppression from us,

    And in him we praise both one who hopes and one in whom hope is placed.

  19. We await the outcome, for beyond it lies

    Such grace as all humankind may enjoy.

  20. May God’s Shadow ever continue to bring his justice;

    He was entrusted with judgments only that he might judge justly.

  21. I have seen nothing like merit for raising up its possessors,

    Nor any ornament among jewels like truthfulness in speech.

  22. So say whatever you wish: what you say

    Is plain, and God forbids that you should speak falsely.

  23. Endure, remain, and prosper; may you ascend through every rank,

    Climbing ever upward to glory’s highest summit.
