1. It is passion, O Ẓamyāʾ—from you I came to know it;

    it burdens me in love with more than I can bear.

  2. If passion is spoken of to me, my heart is its blaze;

    and if tears are spoken of, my eye is drowned in them.

  3. Enough to show you a love-stricken man: his heart is startled

    by the gleam of a lightning flash whose flickering mimics my heart.

  4. Every flash, O Sulaymā, startles him,

    and every love from Mayy’s clan fills him with longing.
