1. قام يجلوها وبُرْدُ اللَّيل مُعْلَمْ

    خمرةً ما اجتمعت معَ الهَمْ

    He rose to bid her farewell, while the cold of night was prevailing,

    With wine that gathered no sorrow,

  2. فهي تِبْرٌ في لجين ذائبٍ

    أو كنارٍ في فؤاد الماء تُضرم

    So it was like snow melting in intense heat,

    Or like fire kindled in the heart of water.

  3. نظم المزج عليها حَبَباً

    رَصَّعَ الياقوتَ بالدرّ المنظّم

    He threaded the wine with raisins,

    And studded the rubies with well-arranged pearls.

  4. عجباً للشَّرب أنَّى قطّبت

    أوجهاً من شرب راحٍ تتبسَّم

    Wondrous is the drink, how it soured

    Faces smiling from the drinking of refreshed wind.

  5. مُرَّةٍ يحلو بها العيش وفي

    مثلها قد يُحمد الدَّهر المذمّم

    At times life is sweetened by it, and in

    The like of it epochs blamed are praised.

  6. من رأى يا قوم منكم قبلها

    قبل هذا أَنَّ نوراً يتجسّم

    O my people, who of you has seen before it

    Before this, a light embodied?

  7. فهي سرٌّ منعت سرّ الضيا

    في ضمير اللَّيل من أن يتكتّم

    It is a secret that prevented the secret of darkness

    In the heart of night from being concealed.

  8. قَدُمت في عصرها حتَّى لقد

    أَوْشَكَتْ تخبرنا عمَّا تقدّم

    It came forth in its time, until indeed

    It almost told us of what preceded.

  9. ما ألذَّ الرَّاح يسقاها امرؤٌ

    من أيادي مُنْية القلب المتيَّم

    How sweet is the wind a man drinks

    From the hands of the heart's loved ones.

  10. كقضيب البان أنَّى ينثني

    ذو قوام يشبه الرّمح المقوَّم

    Like a stick of eaglewood, how it bends,

    Of straight stature like the straightened spear.

  11. أشرق البدر علينا وجهه

    فعرَفْنا منه أنَّ البدرَ قد تم

    The full moon shone its face upon us,

    So we knew the full moon had reached its peak.

  12. بابليُّ اللَّحظ حلويُّ اللّمى

    غير أنِّي في هواه أتألَّم

    Babylonian of glance, sweet of saliva,

    Although in passion for it I suffer.

  13. مالكٌ ما رقَّ للصّبّ ومن

    عادة المالك أن يرثو ويرحم

    An angel not softened to youth, yet who

    Is characteristic of angels to grieve and show mercy.

  14. ظالمي في الحبّ عدلٌ فاعجبوا

    يا لقومي من ظلومٍ يتظلّم

    My oppressors in love are just, so wonder,

    O my people, at oppressors who complain of oppression.

  15. عاطنيها يا نديمي قهوةً

    تَخْضِبُ الأَقداح بالصّبغ المُعَنْدَم

    Give it to me, my friend, coffee,

    That dyes the cups with permanent brown dye.

  16. وانتَهِبْها فرصةً ممكنة

    قبل أن تمضي سدًى أو تتندّم

    And seize any possible opportunity for it,

    Before it fruitlessly passes or you regret.

  17. في رياضٍ قرن البشر بها

    فغَدَتْ تقرن ديناراً بدرهم

    In gardens the created paired,

    So they coupled the dinar with the dirham.

  18. واعصِ من لامك فيها طائعاً

    لذَّة النَّفس فأُنسُ النَّفس ألزم

    And be obediently abstinent regarding blame for it,

    For the pleasure of the soul, and intimacy of soul is more binding.

  19. أترى مستعظم الوِزْر بها

    ليس يدري أنَّ عفو الله أعظم

    Do you see the burden of it too great?

    He does not know that God's pardon is greater.

  20. أنْعَمُ العيشة ما قضَّيتها

    مع مليحٍ جادلَ بالوصلِ وأنعم

    The most pleasant life is what you spend

    With a fair one, communing with intimacy and bliss.

  21. فتعاطاها إلى أن ينجلي

    من أسارير الدُّجى ما كانَ أظلم

    So indulge in it until clarity emerges

    From the glooms of dusk that were darkest.

  22. فترى للصُّبح في إثْر الدُّجى

    صارماً من شفق يلطخ بالدم

    For at dawn, following the darkness,

    You will see a flashing scimitar staining with blood.

  23. أو فكانا كجوادي حلبةٍ

    راح يتلو أشقرٌ آثار أدهم

    Or it was like two racers of the hippodrome

    A bay followed the tracks of a dappled grey.

  24. رفعَ الفجرُ لنا رايتُه

    وتولَّى اللَّيل بالجيش العرمرم

    Dawn raised its banner for us

    And night took charge of the vast army.

  25. يا لها من ليلةٍ في جنحها

    حلّل اللَّهو بها كلّ محرَّم

    What a night it was, in whose wings

    Revelry in it was made licit, all taboos untied.

  26. رقَص البانُ لها من طربٍ

    وتثنَّى لحمام يترنَّم

    The cups danced from rapture,

    And the doves cooed melodiously.

  27. نطقَ العودُ بأسرار الهوى

    فسكتنا والأَغاني تتكلَّم

    The lute spoke secrets of passion,

    So we fell silent while the songs kept speaking.

  28. فحسبناها لما قد أطربتْ

    أفصحت في مدح عبد القادر القرم

    We reckoned that when it brought delight,

    It eloquently praised ʿAbd al-Qādir al-Jīlānī.

  29. لم تزل منَّا إلى حضرتِه

    مِدَحٌ تجبى ومال يتقسّم

    From us to his eminence

    Continued praise that is collected and wealth distributed.

  30. حكَّم العافين في أمواله

    وهي فيما تشتهيه تتحكّم

    The prosperous he appointed over his wealth,

    While regarding what it desires, it holds sway.

  31. هكذا كانَ وما زال كذا

    إنَّها شِنْشِنَة من عهد أخزم

    Thus was it, and still is so,

    For it is a tradition from the epoch of Akhzam.

  32. لو نظرنا رقَّةً في طبعه

    لحسبناهُ نسيماً يتنسّم

    If we look at the gentleness of his nature,

    We would reckon him a breeze inhaled.

  33. فهو مثل الرَّوض وافاه الحيا

    رائقَ المنظَر زاهٍ عطر الشّم

    He is like a garden the rainwatered life,

    Pleasant to look upon, fragrant with aromatic scent.

  34. لم ترق عيني سوى طلعته

    أنا فيها لم أزلْ أنجو من الغم

    My eye has not been delighted but by his appearance,

    In it I cease not to be rescued from grief.

  35. بيَّضتْ وجهَ المُنى أقلامُه

    إنْ يكنْ وجه المُنى أسودَ أسْحم

    His pens whitened the face of prosperity,

    If the face of prosperity is blackish-ashen.

  36. وَسَطَتْ في الخصم حتَّى أنَّها

    فتَكَتْ فتكَ القنا في مهجة الخصم

    And they arbitrated in dispute, so that indeed

    They rent with the rending of the spear in the adversary's brain.

  37. ملهمٌ يعلم ما يأتي من الأَ

    مرِ إنْ شاءَ وبعض النَّاس ملهم

    An inspired one who knows what will come of affairs,

    If he wishes, while some people are inspired.

  38. ذاك واري الزّند مغوار النهى

    إنْ رمى أصمى وإنْ جاد لأفحم

    That one, covering his firebrand, restraining prohibition,

    If he casts, he blinds, and if he is generous, he overwhelms.

  39. وإذا أَبهم أمرٌ في العُلى

    كشفَتْ آراؤه عن كلِّ مبهم

    And when an order is ambiguous on high,

    His opinions uncover every ambiguous thing.

  40. طار في الأُفق لك الصِّيت الَّذي

    كلَّما أنْجَدَ في الأَقطار أتْهم

    For you soared the fame

    That whenever it blazed in the regions, it stoked.

  41. أَنت والغيث جوادا حلبةٍ

    مثلما أَنت مع العلياء توأَم

    You and rain are racers of the hippodrome,

    Just as you are the equal of the sublime.

  42. كم ورَدْنا منكَ عذباً سائِغاً

    كالحيا المنهلّ بل أَمرى وأَسجم

    How much sweet, delicious, from you

    We attained, like snake- cascading not but bitter and astringent.

  43. وبلغنا من أياديك المنى

    فيميناً إنَّ يُمناكَ لكاليم

    And we reached the objective from your hands,

    A right hand, indeed your beneficence is binding.

  44. بأبي أَنت وأُمي ماجداً

    وملاذاً في معاليه لمنْ أَم

    By my father and mother you are a glorious one,

    And refuge regarding your excellences for whoever seeks shelter.

  45. إنْ ذكرنا فضلَ أرباب النَّدى

    كنتَ رأس الكل والرَّأس مقدم

    If we mention the merit of the people of munificence,

    You would be the sum of all, and the sum comes first.

  46. أَنت والله لأندى من حياً

    مستهلّ القطر بالجود وأَكرم

    You, by God, are more dewy than life

    First rain, with generosity and greatest bounty.

  47. أَرغم الله أعاديك بما

    يجدع الأَنف به جدعاً ويرغم

    May God defeat your enemies with what

    Breaks the nose with it, smashing and overwhelming.

  48. وفداك القوم أمَّا كفُّهم

    فجمادٌ ونداهم فمحرَّم

    May your tribe sacrifice themselves for you,

    As for their palms, they are inanimate, and their help prohibited.

  49. وكفاك الله أسواء امرئٍ

    ضاحكٌ يُكشر عن أنياب أَرقم

    May God protect you from the evils of a man

    Laughing, baring the fangs of a butcher.

  50. وإليك اليومَ منِّي مِدَحاً

    أيُّها المولى وحوشِيتَ من الذَّم

    And to you today from me is praise,

    O sir, and my savagery is blameworthy.

  51. فلسان الحال منِّي مفصحٌ

    إنْ يكنْ منِّي لسان القال أَبكم

    The tongue of my state with me is eloquent,

    If the tongue of my speech with me is mute.

  52. أنا في مدحك ما بين الورى

    أفصَح النَّاس وإنْ لم أتكلَّم

    I, in praising you among all mankind,

    Am most eloquent, even if I do not speak.

  53. خدم العبد علاكم شعره

    أَنت في أمثاله ما زلتَ تُخدم

    The servant has served you with his poetry,

    While you, in the likes of him, cease not to serve.

  54. شاكراً مولاي إحسانك بي

    إنَّ إحسانكَ يا مولاي قد عم

    Thanking my patron for your kindness to me,

    For your kindness, my patron, is all-encompassing.

  55. إنْ تَفَضَّلتَ على الدَّاعي لكم

    بقبولٍ فتفضَّل وتكرَّم

    If you would favor the supplicant for you

    With acceptance, then oblige and show nobility.

  56. أسأَل الله لعلياك البقا

    فابقَ في العزِّ مدى الأَيَّام واسلم

    I ask God for your lofty existence to endure,

    So endure in honor for the length of days and be safe.
