1. مَنْ لصَبٍّ مُسْتَطارِ القَلْب هائمْ

    يشتكي المُهْجَةَ من رُمْحٍ وصارِمْ

    He whose passionate heart is restless with love

    Complains of the agony of spears and swords

  2. عاقَدَ الحبَّ على أنْ لا يُرى

    في التصابي غير محلول العزائم

    He has sworn his love on the condition

    That in mutual affection none but the steadfast of purpose be seen

  3. إنَّما تَفْتِك في أحشائه

    نظراتٌ ليس ترقيها التمائم

    For in his heart naught but glances

    That no amulets can ward off

  4. رحمة للصبِّ ما يشكو إلى

    راحمٍ يوماً وهل للصبِّ راحم

    Mercy for the passionate - what he complains of

    To a compassionate one - and does the passionate have a sympathizer?

  5. يا خليليَّ انصفاني من جوًى

    أنا مظلومٌ به والشَّوق ظالم

    O my bosom friend do me justice against my ardour

    I am wronged by it and longing is unjust

  6. ما لهذا البرق يهفو وامضاً

    باتَ يبكيني نجيعاً وهو باسم

    Why does this lightning quiver and flash

    It weeps for me all night while smiling

  7. ويثير الوَجْد يوري زنده

    فاحِمَ اللَّيل وفرع اللَّيل فاحم

    And stirs up passion showing its blade

    The night glowed and the night bloomed

  8. أذكُرُ العيش وأيَّامَ الحمى

    ناعمات العيش بالبيض النواعم

    I recall living and the days of fever

    The gentle life with gentle white women

  9. يا سقى الله الحمى من موطنٍ

    يزأَرُ اللَّيث به والظبي باغم

    May God water the abode of fever

    Where the lion roars and the gazelle sighs

  10. كم وكم قد فتكتْ فانتصرَتْ

    أَعْيُنُ الغزلان بالأُسْد الضراغم

    How many times did the black-eyed gazelles conquer

    The eyes of lionesses with the smooth-cheeked lion

  11. وكميٍّ حازمٍ أصْبَحَ في

    قبضةِ الحبّ وما ثَمَّةَ حازم

    And how many firm ones in the morning

    Were caught in the grip of love, and where is the firm one

  12. نامَ عنِّي غافلاً من كمدي

    ربَّ ساعٍ ساهِر الطَّرف لنائم

    He slept heedlessly of me for a brief hour

    While my eyes were sleepless and awake

  13. ويمجُّ الشَّهدَ من ريقَتِه

    ولحظّي منه تجريع العلاقم

    And he sucked the honey from his spittle

    While my share from him was but bitter aloes

  14. حاربتْني الأَعيُنُ النجلُ ومن

    مُهْجَتي غُذُّوا ومن لي أنْ تسالم

    The eyes of the doe fought me, and from

    My love they were nourished, and who can make peace?

  15. ما أحلَّ القتل إلاَّ عامداً

    مستبيحٌ سيفُ عينيه المحارم

    Naught but a willful transgressor deserves death

    The sword of his eyes violates the unlawful

  16. مُعْجَبٌ من حُسنْه مبتسمٌ

    يُودعُ اللؤلؤَ هاتيك المباسم

    Enchanted by his beauty, smiling

    Bestowing pearls, those smiles

  17. قاتلي من غير ذنبٍ في الهوى

    أَنْتَ في قَتْلي رعاك الله آثم

    You killed me without sin in love

    May God protect you, you have sinned in killing me

  18. سفكتْ أحداقُك السوُّد دمي

    أينَ من أحداقك البيض الصوارم

    The black of your eyes shed my blood

    Where are the piercing whites of your eyes?

  19. فِعْلُ ألحاظك في عُشَّاقها

    يَتَعدَّى بشباها وهو لازم

    The deeds of your glances against their lovers

    Exceed their right yet cleave fast

  20. لي على قَدِّك نَوْحٌ في الدُّجى

    مثلما ناحتْ على الغصنِ الحمائم

    For your height I moan in the darkness

    As the doves once moaned for the branch

  21. ساغَ ما جرَّعْتني من غصَّةٍ

    غير أنِّي عن جنى ريقك صائم

    I have accepted the bitterness you made me drink

    Except that I fast from the wine of your saliva

  22. فَضَحَ الحبُّ الهوى في أهلِهِ

    وبدا من كاتمٍ وما هو كاتم

    Love has exposed passion in its people

    And has appeared from one who hides it, and it is no hider

  23. لا أرى الله عذولي راحةً

    لامني فيك فما أُصغي للائم

    I see no comfort for my crime, blame me for you

    And I heed no blamer

  24. وبلائي كلُّه من لائمٍ

    باتَ يلحو وحبيبٍ لا يلائم

    And my tribulation is all from a blamer

    Who persists in blaming, and a beloved who will not blame

  25. والهوى داء كمين في الحشا

    ليثَ شعري ما لهذا الدَّاء حاسم

    Passion is a lurking malady in my soul

    A lion, none can overcome this disease

  26. كانَ لي صبرٌ فما دام وما

    كانَ صبر الصّبّ بعد الصَّدِّ دائم

    I had patience but it did not last

    The patience of passion is not lasting after estrangement

  27. كيفَ يسلو ذاكرٌ عهد الهوى

    جدَّدَ الذكر لعهد متقادم

    How can one who recalls the pact of love find solace

    When the reminder renews an old pact?

  28. عَجَباً للشَّوق يبني ما بنى

    يا ترى يهدمه من بعدُ هادم

    Wondrous is longing, see what it builds

    I wonder, who will demolish it afterwards?

  29. وبصدْري زفرة لو كُشِفَتْ

    للصَّبا يومئذٍ هَبَّتْ سمائم

    Were the sigh in my chest revealed

    To the zephyrs, gales would blow

  30. غير أنِّي والأَماني جمَّة

    لا أُبالي وأبو سلمان سالم

    But I, and my wishes gathered, care not

    And Abu Salman is safe

  31. سيِّدٌ أمَّا نداه فالحيا

    مستهلٌّ من سَحابٍ متراكم

    A master whose fame, when called

    Is an auspicious cloud laden with rain

  32. فهو للصَّادي إذا بلَّ الصَّدى

    مَوْرِدٌ عذبٌ وبحرٌ متلاطم

    For he is to the questioner, when the echo sounds

    A fresh spring, and a surging sea

  33. شِمْتُ منه البَرق عُلْويُّ السَّنا

    مُؤْذِنُ العارضِ بالغيث لشائم

    I smelled from him the lofty lightning

    Foreteller of rain for the complaining poor

  34. كسَحاب القطر إلاَّ أنَّه

    يتبع السَّاجم منهلاً بساجم

    Like rainclouds, but he

    Follows the humble shower with a shower

  35. إنَّ مَن يرويك عنه خبراً

    لا كمن يرويك عن كعب وحاتم

    Verily, the one who relates a report of him to you

    Is not like one who relates of Ka'b and Hatim

  36. عن رسول الله عن أبنائه

    ما رَوَيْنا من أحاديث المكارم

    From the Messenger of God, from his sons

    What we have transmitted of the hadiths of noble deeds

  37. صفوة الله من الخلق وهم

    عالم المعروف والنَّاس عوالم

    The elect of God from creation, and they

    Are guides for creatures, else they would be beasts

  38. هم هداة الخلق لولا جدُّهُم

    وهداهم كانت الخلق بهائم

    The rightly-guided, but for their forefather

    And guidance, creation would wander confused

  39. آل بيتٍ خُلِقوا مُذْ خُلِقوا

    للعلى ركناً وللدِّين دعائم

    The family of a house, created from the first

    As pillars of glory and pillars of faith

  40. فَتَحَ الله علينا بِهمُ

    في مفاتيح العطايا والخواتم

    Through them God opened for us

    The keys of grace and the seals

  41. حبَّذا نَجْلُ عليٍّ إنَّه

    عَبِقُ الأَخلاق عطريُّ النَّسائم

    Blessed is the son of Ali, he is

    The essence of manners, the fragrant breath

  42. قالَ من أبْصَرَهُ مستبشراً

    هكذا فلْتَكُ أبناءُ الأَكارم

    "Thus should the sons of nobles be," said he who saw him joyfully

    Inheritor after his father in ascendance

  43. وارثٌ بعد أَبيه في العُلى

    من بني هاشم ما أَوْرَثَ هاشم

    Of the Hashimites, none inherited like Hashim

    A sheer nobility and towering glory

  44. شرفٌ محضٌ ومجدٌ باذخ

    أَيُّ فرعٍ من فروع الفخر ناجم

    Which branch of the branches of pride buds

    An ascendancy ever rising

  45. يرتقي في كلّ يوم رفعةً

    في المعالي ليس تُرقى بالسَّلالم

    To the heights - no ladder can climb it

    By my father the noblest - in war they have no fear

  46. بأبي الأَشراف عن بأس لهم

    أعربت سُمر القنا وهي أَعاجم

    Eloquent the reddened swords of Qana even when mute

    And continued favors from their hands

  47. وتوالت من يديهم أنعمٌ

    فازَ من كانَ لها ما عاش لائم

    So he survives who censured them

    You are my patron from them, and you are their people

  48. لي ولي منكم وأَنْتم أَهْلُها

    نِعَمٌ تَرفَعُني فوق النعائم

    Favors raising me above favors

    So my reward from you, my master, is

  49. فَجُزِيتُم سيِّدي عن شاعرٍ

    ناثرٍ فيكم مدى الدَّهر وناظم

    A lifetime's scattering verse and rhythm

    As when a northerly wind shook a stone pine

  50. مثلَ ما هَبَّتْ صَباً من حاجر

    ترقص الأَغصان منها بالكمائم

    And the branches danced with the swaying

    By your favors upon us there is an effect

  51. ولنعمائِكَ فينا أَثرٌ

    إنَّ آثاركَ آثار الغمائم

    Your traces are like the traces of clouds

    Does the master know what he has known

  52. هل دَرى السَّيِّد فيما قد درى

    أَمْ هو الآن بما أَعْلَمُ عالم

    Or is he now aware of what I know?

    Verily your Indian steel is in peril

  53. إنَّ هِنْدواتِكم في كُرْبةٍ

    ما له منها سواك اليوم عاصم

    None but you can save it today

    He has repented of his sins

  54. تابَ ممَّا قد جنى من ذَنْبه

    وعلى التَّوبةِ قد أصْبَحَ نادم

    And regrets in the morning what he gathered in the evening

    Thus I seek your intercession

  55. ولهذا أنا باستعطافكم

    قارعٌ باللّطف أبوابَ المراحم

    Knocking gently on the doors of mercy

    If you wish, you can save him, or not

  56. إنْ تَشَأْ أَنْقَذْتَهُ أَوْ لا فلا

    فَعلى أَيّهما أصْبَحتَ عازم

    Whichever you intend

    So show mercy my master, and be kind to him

  57. فتَعَطَّفْ سيِّدي والطفْ به

    وعليه إنَّه مولاي خادم

    He is still my patron and servant

    You have been to me a shady shadow

  58. دُمْتَ لي ظلاًّ ظَليلاً وله

    إنَّما ظِلُّك للرَّاجين دائم

    Your shade endures for those who seek it
