1. قُلْ مثلَما قد قال عبدُ الباقي

    في نَعْتِ عِتْرَةِ صَفْوَةِ الخلاّق

    Say, as Abdu'l Baqi has said

    In eulogy of the elite of mankind

  2. أو فاسترحْ وأرِحْ لسانك واتخذ

    للنطق من صمت أجلّ نطاق

    Either take rest and give your tongue relief

    And take from silence a sublime mode of speech

  3. إنَّ اللسان لمضغةٌ ما لم تفه

    بالطيّبات تُلاك بالأشداق

    Indeed, the tongue is a morsel that unless

    Seasoned with the good, it destroys you with heartburn

  4. أوَ ما تراه قد أتى بأوابدٍ

    تفنى بنو الدنيا وهنَّ بواقي

    Or what you see has come with far-reaching wisdoms

    Mortal men perish while they remain

  5. حِكمٌ على الألباب يُشْرِقُ نورها

    لله دَرُّك حكمة الإشراق

    Wisdoms that enlighten minds with their light

    May God bless you, o wisdom of illumination

  6. تُشجي وتُطربُ أنفساً وجوارحاً

    فكأنَّهنَّ صوارمُ الأحداق

    Exhilarating souls and limbs

    As if they were sharp swords

  7. ولقد أدار على العقول سلافةً

    ما لا تدور به أكُفُّ الساقي

    And it has stirred the minds with its smoothness

    In ways the wrist of the cupbearer cannot

  8. عن بهجة المعشوق يسفر حسنها

    ولواعج المشتاق في العشَّاق

    Unveiling the beauty of the beloved

    And passions of the ardent lover

  9. قد عانَقَتْ أشرافَ آل محمد

    فكأنَّها الأطواق في الأعناق

    It has embraced the nobility of the family of Muhammed

    As if they were necklaces around necks

  10. فكأنَّها هَبَّتْ صَباً في روضةٍ

    فتأرَّجَتْ بنسيمها الخفَّاق

    As if it breathed a morning breeze in a garden

    That fluttered with its gentle wind

  11. رقَّتْ فكادتْ أنْ تسيل بلطفها

    حتَّى من الأَقلام والأَوراق

    It softened, almost melting away

    Even ink and paper with its gentleness

  12. وبما غَدَتْ تُملي ثناءً طيِّباً

    عن طيِّبٍ في الأَصل والأَعراق

    And with it dictating beautiful praise

    Of one pure of origin and ancestry

  13. لُدِغَتْ أُميَّةُ منه أفعى تنفث ال

    سّمّ الزّعاف وما لها من راقِ

    Umayyah was bitten by it like a snake spewing

    Poisonous venom, beyond cure

  14. كَلِمٌ ولا وخزات أطراف القنا

    يَلْمَعْنَ عن صَوْب الدم المهراق

    A word whose edges of the spear

    Gleam towards the spilling blood

  15. من كلِّ قافية بثاقب فكره

    يفتضُّها عَذْرَا بغير صداق

    With each rhyme its penetrating mind unlocks

    A virgin metaphor without a price

  16. طوبى له في النشأتين لقد حوى

    نعمَ الذَّخيرة والثناء الباقي

    Good fortune to him in both worlds, he has contained

    Good provision and lasting praise

  17. فالله يجزيه بها خير الجَزا

    ويَقيه شرًّا ما له من واقِ

    So may God reward him with the best reward

    And protect him from any evil without end
