1. بحيث انعطف البانُ

    قويمُ القدِّ فتَّانُ

    The slender waist bent gracefully,

    Straight as a spear, alluring and coquettish,

  2. وللقامات أغصان

    وفي الأرداف كثبان

    With branches for hips

    And dunes on the buttocks.

  3. رويداً أيها السَّاقي

    فإنِّي بك سكران

    Slow down, oh cupbearer,

    For I am drunk on you,

  4. وهذا قدّك النشوا

    ن من عينيك نشوان

    Your supple figure arouses desire,

    Springing from your eyes.

  5. فلي من روضك الزاهي

    بروض الحسن بستان

    For me, your radiant garden

    Is a garden of beauty.

  6. فمن وجنتك الوَرْدُ

    ومن قامتك البان

    Your rose petals

    And your supple figure,

  7. ومن عارضك المخضرّ

    لي رَوحٌ وريحان

    Your verdant cheeks,

    Revive my soul and heart.

  8. وفي فيك لنا خمرٌ

    وأنت الخمر والحان

    In you we have wine,

    You are the wine and the cupbearer.

  9. وإنِّي لجنى ريقتك

    العذبة ظمآن

    I yearn to sip

    Your sweet saliva, thirsty,

  10. جنود منك في الحب

    على قتليَ أعوان

    Your glances hurl regiments,

    To slay me in love.

  11. فمن جفنيك صمصام

    ومن قدّك مرّان

    From your lashes, arrows,

    From your figure, supple spears,

  12. نعم في طرفك الموقظ

    وجدي وهو وسنان

    Yes, in your awakening glances,

    My soul and it are companions.

  13. وما أنتَ كمن يُسلى

    وما لي عنك سلوان

    You're not like those who console,

    Nor do I seek solace from you.

  14. وجنّات دخلناها

    فقلنا أين رضوان

    We entered gardens,

    Saying: Where is Paradise?

  15. وفيها من فنون الحُ

    سْن في الدَّوحة أفنان

    In them, the forms and hues

    Of flowers differ,

  16. وفيها اختلفت للز

    هر أشكال وألوان

    The narcissi have cheeks

    As lilies have ears.

  17. فللنرجس أحداقٌ

    كما للآس آذان

    The bud appears with teeth,

    As if to bite,

  18. وهذا الأٌقحوان الغضُّ

    تبدو منه أسنان

    While the cupbearer chides us

    For not drinking.

  19. وقد حضّ على شرب

    المدام الصّرف ندمان

    Wine-bearers circled with cups

    And tumblers,

  20. وطافت بكؤوس الراح

    والراحات غلمان

    Silver goblets

    Melting pearls within.

  21. وطاسات من الفضة

    فيها ذاب عقيان

    No devil whispered worries

    Into the drinker's heart,

  22. فما وسْوَسَ للهمِّ

    بصَدْر الشَّرب شيطان

    Saying: Drink for love,

    For love rules all.

  23. وقال اشرب على حبّي

    فإنَّ الحبَّ سلطان

    This empty goblet

    Became full.

  24. وهذا القدح الفارغ

    أضحى وهو ملآن

    May God protect those we loved,

    Though they betrayed us,

  25. رعى الله لنا في الحيّ

    أحباباً وإن خانوا

    We remember them in absence,

    Though they transgressed and left.

  26. ذكرناهم على النأي

    وإن شطوا وإن بانوا

    In memory there is sadness,

    Sighs, and sorrows,

  27. وفي الذكرى تباريحٌ

    وأشجان وأحزان

    As if we are in the gardens of grief,

    Not as we or they once were.

  28. كأنَّا في رياض الحزن

    لا كُنَّا ولا كانوا

    The rain of the past era waters

    Wilting roses,

  29. سقى عهدهم الماضي

    مُلِثُّ القَطر هتَّان

    Since their loss, tears

    Never dry on our eyes,

  30. فما تغمض من بعدهم

    للصبِّ أجْفان

    My burning liver thirsts

    For the cool of their lips.

  31. وأظمى كبدي الحرّى

    بَرودُ الثغر ريَّان

    We gave selves that sacrificed,

    Paying high prices of love,

  32. بذلنا أنفساً تغلو

    لها في الحب أثمان

    But no wealth is safe,

    Though children may be.

  33. ألا لا سَلِمَ المال

    وفي الأنجاب سلمان

    The lofty honor

    Of the noble ones,

  34. قرين الشرف الباذخ

    والأشراف أقران

    For their brilliant ascent

    Is a sign of destiny,

  35. على طلْعَته الغرّاء

    للإقبال عنوان

    When appraised, they are

    The pride of Adnan,

  36. همُ القومُ إذا عُدّوا

    بهم تفخر عدنان

    Lords who bow to none

    But God,

  37. أباةُ الضَّيْم أشراف

    لغير الله ما دانوا

    Unerring and steadfast,

    Men of truth, unmasked,

  38. وها هم في سبيل الله

    ما جاروا وما مانوا

    Veils cannot stop them.

    O highest aspiration, you are

  39. هم الصُّمُّ إذا يَقْسون

    والماءُ إذا لانوا

    Humanity's eyes,

    In your steps are signs

  40. وإمَّا حَلَّقوا في جوِّ

    علياءٍ فعُقبان

    Of the masters of yore.

    When weighed, superiority

  41. شيوخ لم تزل تسمو

    إلى المجد وفتيان

    Tips to you,

    Poems in your praise

  42. أذلّوا عزّة المال

    فما ذلّوا وما هانوا

    Are melody and song,

    In my thanks for your gifts

  43. وصانوا المجد في البذل

    فما أحسَنَ ما صانوا

    Are messages and proclamations.

    God willed to raise

  44. فَهُمْ للدِّين أطوادٌ

    وهم للدِّين أركان

    My stature through you,

    Your kindness to people

  45. رجال كوشفت بالحقّ

    لا يحجبها الرّان

    Added to your beauty,

    Any praise not yours

  46. فيا عين العُلى أنْتِ

    لعين العزّ إنسان

    Would be pretense and slander,

    Any gain not from you

  47. وفي آثارك الغُرّ

    من السادات أعيان

    Would be loss,

    The dawn and what

  48. إذا ما وُزِنَ القومُ

    ففي وزنك رجحان

    Secrecy conceals of your merit,

    My praises carried

  49. وفي مدحك للأقلام

    تغريدٌ وألحان

    Through lands by convoys.

    You ascend to the highest

  50. وفي شكري لنعمائك

    إعلامٌ وإعلان

    Heavens, where Jupiter sinks.

  51. أرادَ الله في شأنك

    أن يُرْفَعَ لي شان

  52. ومما زاد في حُسْنِك

    عند النَّاس إحسان

  53. فمدحٌ لم يكن فيك

    فتزويرٌ وبهتان

  54. وربحٌ لم يكن منك

    فذاك الربح خسران

  55. وعن فضلك والصبح

    وما يخفيه كتمان

  56. وسارت بثنائي لك

    في الأقطار ركبان

  57. فلا زِلْتَ بعلياءٍ

    لها ينحطُّ كيوان
