Why must I bid farewell each morn

When we no longer meet after long separation

And sever ties with friends - not out of disdain

On my part, nor seeking out conflict

I left them, my tears flowing

    My heart aflame with separation

I left them and returned, patient

Though I am filled with longing

I buried them in a low valley

    Pure white, like slender swords

I'm weary of life after their loss

And have cut off all my hopes in them

How can life be sweet when I cannot see

    My companions, family and friends?

I see my loved ones ravaged by time

    Falling like leaves amongst us

I left the smartest man alive

Noblest of all in his excellence

I lost the pillar men relied upon

Whose virtues were related by trusted men

He was my refuge, watering place

The source of my pride and will to compete

    His hands would embrace me

    Gifts that adorned my neck

I say to him, as I walked in his funeral

    My tears flowing in sorrow

Where to go with him gone?

The pearls of speech and wise days are lost

You lived nobly amongst men, and dead

O purest of chiefs and protectors

You who heavens poured drink each night

    With rumbling thunder and lightning

I've exhausted my patience with this tragedy

Grieving endlessly though I must move on

I must drink the cups of sorrow

Brought by the hands of destiny

An affliction that befell Iraq - unveil

Iraq's grief at Abd al-Baqi's death
