1. بلغتُ بحمد الله ما أنا طالبُ

    زماناً وهنَّتني لديكَ المطالبُ

    I have attained, by the grace of God, what I sought

    For long while your requests weakened me

  2. فأصبحتُ لا أرجو سوى ما رجوتهُ

    مراماً وما لي في سواكَ مآربُ

    So I came to hope for nothing but what I aspired to

    With purpose, and I have no other desires besides you

  3. وقد كنت من غيظي على الدهر عاتباً

    فما أنا في شيءٍ على الدهر عاتبُ

    And I used to blame fate angrily

    But now I do not blame fate for anything

  4. لئن كانَ قبلَ اليوم والأمس مُذنباً

    فقد جاءَني من ذنبه وهو تائبُ

    If I was a sinner before today and yesterday

    Well, repentance for that sin has come to me

  5. وجدتُ بك الأيام مولاي طلقةً

    وسالمني فيك الزمان المحاربُ

    I found the days gentle through you, my master

    And time that fought me is now peaceful with me

  6. وقد شِمتُ من جدواكَ لي كلَّ بارقٍ

    ونوؤك مرجوٌّ وغيثُك ساكبُ

    And I sensed in your generosity to me every flash of lightning

    Your help is hoped for and your rain pouring

  7. فلا الأملُ الأقصى البعيدُ بنازحٍ

    لديَّ ولا وجهُ المطالب شاحبُ

    So neither far-reaching nor lofty hopes

    Remain with me, nor do the faces of requests grow pale

  8. وهل تنجح الآمالُ وهي قصيَّة

    وتبلغُ إلاَّ في نداكَ الرغائبُ

    And how can hopes succeed if they are short

    Or attain except through your fulfillment of desires?

  9. لقد حَسُنَتْ فيك الرعيَّة بعدما

    أساءَت إليها بالخطوب النوائبُ

    The flock behaved well after they

    Had done it wrong with calamities and disasters

  10. وألهمتها فيما تصدَّيتَ رشدَها

    ألا إنَّ هذا الرشدَ للخير جالبُ

    You inspired them, as you guided them, with wisdom

    Indeed this wisdom brings good

  11. كففتَ يدَ الأشرار من كلِّ وجهةٍ

    فلا ثمَّ منهوبٍ ولا ثمَّ ناهبُ

    You held back the hands of evildoers from every side

    So no more plunder and no more pillaging remains

  12. ومن لوزير قلَّد الأمر ربَّه

    نظيرك شيخاً حنكته التجاربُ

    And who is like the minister you appointed, my Lord

    Whose experience has tested him

  13. بصيرٌ بتدبير الأمور وعارفٌ

    بمبدئِها ماذا تكون العواقب

    Discerning in managing affairs and knowing

    What their beginnings will lead to in the end

  14. أذلَّ بكَ الأخطارَ وهي عزيزة

    فهانتْ عليه في علاك المصاعب

    You humiliated dangers, though formidable

    They became easy for him through your tribulations

  15. تريه صباح الرأي والأمر مُبهم

    فتنجاب من ليلِ الخطوب الغياهبُ

    You see the morning of opinion and command obscured

    So the darkness of calamities is dispelled through you

  16. ألَنْتَ له في قسوة البأس جانباً

    فلانَ له في قسوة البأس جانبُ

    You supported him in the harshness of affliction

    So he supported you in the harshness of affliction

  17. فأصبح لم يعرض عن الناس لطفه

    ويحضر فيهم بأسه وهو غائبُ

    Thus he does not refrain from showing people his gentleness

    And though absent, his might and wrath are present with them

  18. وبأسكَ لا البيض الصوارم والقنا

    وجودك لا ما تستهلُّ السحائبُ

    Your might, not gleaming swords nor spears

    Your presence, not what the clouds rain down

  19. وما زلت حتَّى يدرك المجد ثأرَهُ

    وتُشْرِقُ في آفاقهنَّ المناقبُ

    You have continued until glory takes its vengeance

    And virtues shine in their horizons

  20. بأيديك سحرُ الخطّ لا الخطّ تنثني

    فتثني عليها المرهفات القواضبُ

    Through your hands the magic of speech, not speech bends

    So those slender waists bend to it

  21. تخرُّ لك الأقلام في الطرسِ سُجَّداً

    لما أنتَ تمليه وما أنتَ كاتبُ

    Pens bow down before you, prostrate on parchment

    At what you dictate and what you write

  22. إذا شئت كانت في العداة كتايباً

    وهيهات منها إذ تصولُ الكتايبُ

    If you wish, they become in the enemies like unsheathed blades

    While it is inconceivable that they rage when you unleash them

  23. تقرّط آذان الرجال بحكمةٍ

    حكتها اللئالي رونقاً أو تقاربُ

    They pierce the ears of men with wisdom

    Whether you relate it gently or draw analogies

  24. متى أفرِغتْ في قالب الفكر زيَّنتْ

    وزانت من الألباب تلك القوالب

    When they are molded in the crucible of thought, they are adorned

    And are weighed by discerning minds in those crucibles

  25. بهنَّ غذاء للعقولِ وشِرْعَةٌ

    تسوغ وتصفو عندهنَّ المشاربُ

    With them is nourishment for intellects and a canon

    That justifies and clarifies perspectives for them

  26. تصرَّفتَ في حلوِ الكلام ومرِّهِ

    فأنتَ مُجِدٌّ كيف شئتَ ولاعبُ

    You wielded elegant and coarse speech

    So you are glorious, however you wish, and artful

  27. ذَهَبْتَ بكلٍّ منهما كلَّ مذهب

    ذهاباً وما ضاقت عليك المذاهبُ

    You took each of them down every course

    And those courses did not narrow for you

  28. فمن ذكر وجدٍ يسلب المرءَ لبَّه

    على مثله دمع المتيَّم ذائبُ

    Thus whoever recalls a passion that melts one's reserve

    At the like of it the tear of the bereft melts

  29. ومن غَزَلٍ عَذب كأنَّ بُيُوته

    مسارحُ آرام النقا وملاعبُ

    And whoever spins gentle sweetness, it is as if

    Its dwellings are theaters of tranquility and playgrounds

  30. وفي الباقيات الصالحات مثوبة

    من الله ما يبدو من الشمس حاجبُ

    And in lasting good deeds is reward

    From God that emerges from behind the sun's veil

  31. دَمَغْتَ بها من آل حربٍ عصابةً

    تناقشهم في صنعهم وتحاسبُ

    You stamped on the party of war an elite

    Who take them to task for their making and call them to account

  32. تناقَلَها الركبانُ عنك فأَصبحت

    تُجابُ بها أرض وتطوى سباسبُ

    Travelers transmitted them from you, so they became

    Answers to a land, and folds were traversed with them

  33. مغيظاً من القوم الذين تقدَّمت

    لهم في المخازي الموبقات مكاسبُ

    Enraging the people who gained

    Corrupted profits in disgraceful ways from them

  34. غضبت بها لله غير مَداهنٍ

    وغيركَ يخشى كاشحاً ويراقبُ

    You raged at them for God, without compromise

    While unlike you others fear harshness and watch

  35. مواهب من ربٍّ كريمٍ رُزِقْتَها

    وما هذه الأشياء إلاَّ مواهبُ

    Gifts from a generous Lord you were granted

    And these things are none but gifts

  36. أروح أجرُّ الذيل أسحب فضله

    وإنِّي لأذيال الفخار لساحبُ

    I wander dragging the train of your merit

    Though I am but the trails of dust trailing it

  37. بمن لم يقم في الأكرمين مقامه

    ولا نابَ عنه في الحقيقة نائبُ

    Compared to the one who did not take his stand with the noble

    And none can represent him in reality as his deputy

  38. فقد وجدت بغداد والناس راحةً

    وقد أَتْعَبَتْها قبل ذاكَ المتاعبُ

    For you brought Baghdad and its people comfort

    After troubles had wearied it before that

  39. قضى عمري طال في العزِّ عمره

    أقاربه مسرورة والأجانبُ

    One whose long life was spent in power

    His relatives joyous and foreigners

  40. وإن قلتُ ما جاء العراق ولا نرى

    نظيراً له فينا فما أنا كاذبُ

    And if I say none has come to Iraq like him

    I speak no falsehood

  41. بنادرة الدُّنيا وفرحةِ أهلها

    أضاءَت لنا أقطارها والجوانبُ

    He illuminated its regions and sides for us

    As a rare gem of the world and delight of its people

  42. أمولاي ما عندي إليك وسيلة

    تقرّبني زلفى وإنِّي لراغبُ

    My master, I have no means of attaining

    Your intimacy though I desire it

  43. محاسنُ شعري ما إذا أنا قستها

    بشعرك والإِنصاف فهي مثالبُ

    If I weigh the beauties of my poetry

    Against your poetry, by justice mine are blemishes

  44. وإنِّي مع الإِطناب فيك مقصِّرٌ

    وإن كانَ شعري فيك ممَّا يناسبُ

    Though I prolong my praise of you, I fall short

    Even if my poetry about you is apt

  45. أهنِّيكَ فيه مَنصِباً أنت فوقَه

    بمرتبة لو أنصفتك المراتبُ

    I congratulate you on a position you are above

    By a rank the ranks have not done justice to

  46. فإنَّك شرَّفتَ المناصبَ كلَّها

    وما أنتَ ممَّن شرَّفَتْهُ المناصبُ

    For you have ennobled all positions

    And you are not one whom positions have ennobled

  47. وَهَنَّيْت نفسي والعراق وأهلَهُ

    وكلَّ امرئ أهل لذاك وصاحبُ

    I praised myself, Iraq, its people

    And every worthy and appropriate person

  48. وزفَّت إليه كلَّ عذراء باكرٍ

    كما زفَّت البيضُ الحسانُ الكواعبُ

    And sent to it every virgin bride

    As gazelles were sent to the beautiful slender waists

  49. قوافٍ بها نشفي الصدورَ وربَّما

    تَدبُّ إلى الحسَّاد منها عقاربُ

    Meters by which we heal hearts, and perhaps

    Because of which scorpions sting the envious

  50. شكرتُكَ شكر الروض باكره الحيا

    وشكرك مفروض ومدحك واجبُ

    I thanked you with the thanks of a blossoming garden

    And gratitude to you is obligatory and praising you a duty

  51. وليسَ يفي شعري لشكرك حقَّهُ

    ولو نُظمتْ للشعر فيك الكواكبُ

    Yet my poetry cannot fully thank you

    Even if the stars were to be strung in verse for you

  52. وممَّا حباهُ الله من طيِّب الثنا

    مشارقها مملوءة والمغاربُ

    Of the excellent praise with which God has gifted me

    Its horizons filled, and its Wests

  53. وكلِّي ثناء في علاك وألسن

    إذا كنت ممدوحي وأنت المخاطبُ

    My every eulogy is of your ascent, and tongues

    When you are my subject and the addressee

  54. وإنِّي لأبدي حاجةً قد حجبتُها

    إليك وما بيني وبينك حاجبُ

    I make known to you a need I have concealed

    From you, and there is no barrier between us

  55. سواي يروم المالَ مكترثاً به

    ويرغبُ في غير الذي أنا راغبُ

    Apart from me, one seeks wealth preoccupied with it

    And desires other than what I desire

  56. وإنَّك أدرى الناس فيما أريده

    وأعلمهم فيما له أنا طالبُ

    You know best what I want

    And are most knowledgeable about what I seek

  57. وكيف وهل يخفى وعلمك سابق

    بمطلبي الأسنى وفكرك ثاقبُ

    How could it be hidden when your knowledge precedes

    My heartfelt wish and your insight penetrates?

  58. فلا زلتَ طلاَّع الثنايا ولم تزلْ

    تطالعني منك النجوم الغواربُ

    You continue informed of secrets, and you

    Continue to observe me with penetrating stars
