1. ألا هَلْ للمتيَّمِ من مُجير

    كئيبٍ ذي فؤاد مستطيرِ

    Alas! Is there no refuge for the lovelorn,

    The sad-hearted with churning bosom,

  2. يقلِّبُه الأَسى ظهراً لبطنٍ

    ويُسْلِمُهُ إلى حرِّ الزفير

    Whom grief tosses back and belly,

    And surrenders to the heat of sighs?

  3. وكيفَ يَقَرُّ بالزفرات صبٌّ

    وفي أحشائه نار السَّعير

    How can one find peace in sighs

    When in his guts rages a blazing fire?

  4. يعالج بالهوى دمعاً طليقاً

    يصوبُ للوعة القلب الأَسير

    He treats freely flowing tears with love,

    As the afflicted heart vents its despair.

  5. وكم في الحيِّ من ليثٍ هصورٍ

    صريع لواحظ الرشأ الغرير

    How many grim lions in the wild,

    Lie dead, slain by the intense looks of a gazelle!

  6. وكنت على قديم الدهر أصبو

    بأشواقي لربَّات الخدور

    I used to pine in times of yore,

    For the maidens of the tents with my yearning.

  7. وكنت إذا زأرت بأسد غيل

    رأيت الأُسْدَ تفزع من زئيري

    Whenever I roared like an angry lion,

    I saw lions take fright at my roaring.

  8. فغادرني الزَّمان كما تراني

    عقيراً في يد الخطوب العقور

    Yet time has left me as you see me now,

    Feeble in the grip of intractable misfortunes,

  9. فأَغدو لا إلى خلٍّ أنيسٍ

    وما لي غير همِّي من سمير

    The ancients took after their ancestors,

    And the young went astray, following the old.

  10. فآهاً يا أُميمة ثمَّ آهاً

    لما لاقيت من دهرٍ مبير

    This world has shown me

    Its wondrous and bizarre events,

  11. محا من أُسرتي الأَشراف منهم

    كما مُحيت حروفٌ من سطور

    And my soul still longs for that day,

    Gloomy, windy, and showery,

  12. لقد بعد الكرام النجب عنِّي

    فليلي بعدهم ليل الضرير

    So I can vent some of my torment,

    And calm the sighs that rend my breast.

  13. على أنِّي دفعت إلى زمان

    يخاطر فيه ذو المجد الخطير

    If I come to live among a people,

    And some of them look at me askance,

  14. تشبّهت الأَسالف بالأَعالي

    وقد تاه الصغير على الكبير

    How strange that ignorance injures them

    With arrogance puffing up their noses!

  15. وأمستْ هذه الدُّنيا تريني

    حوادثها أعاجيب الأُمور

    They see themselves as the epitome of glory,

    Not as lords of dunghills and goat-pens!

  16. ولا زالتْ تتوقُ لذاك نفسي

    إلى يومٍ عبوسٍ قمطرير

    I turn my face from them in disdain,

    As the mighty spurns the mean.

  17. لعلِّي أنْ أبُلَّ به غليلاً

    ويهدأ بعض ما بي من زفير

    I leave the arrogant to their arrogance,

    And drag the train of the vainglorious.

  18. أراني إنْ حلَلْتُ بدار قومٍ

    أساءَ ببعض أقوامٍ حضوري

    How often time raises up a soul,

    But cuts it short with its quick scissors!

  19. وذي عجب أضرَّ الجهل فيه

    وأنفٍ مشمخرٍ بالغرور

    How often fate debases to the dust

    One whose place is above the stars!

  20. يرى من نفسه ربّ المعالي

    ولا ربّ الخورنق والسدير

    I guard my dignity from the rabble,

    For guarding one’s soul is the wont of the proud.

  21. ضريت بوجهه وصددت عنه

    كما صدَّ العظيم عن الحقير

    Since I began to versify,

    I never dedicated verse to one devoid of taste.

  22. وألقى المعجبين بكلِّ عُجْبٍ

    وأسحبُ ذيل مختالٍ فخور

    How many live, yet seem

    Among the dead in the tombs!

  23. وكم رفع الزَّمان وضيع نفس

    فنال الحظَّ بالباعِ القصير

    I came to Basra the radiant, hastening,

    For love of you, intrepid one.

  24. وكم حطَّ القضاء إلى حضيض

    وكان محلُّه فوقَ الأَثير

    To visit a master scholar there,

    Endowed by God with abundant knowledge,

  25. أصونُ عن الأَرذال عزَّ نفسي

    وَصَوْنُ النفس من شِيَم الغيور

    A unique paragon of the learned,

    Whose sciences pour like seas,

  26. ولا أهديتُ منذ قرضت شعراً

    إلى من لا يزال بلا شعور

    Ahmad, cream of the helpers; my journey

    Would be to him, if I decided to travel.

  27. وكم في الناس من حيٍّ ولكنْ

    يُرى في الناس من أهل القبور

    If I enumerated the notables of a people,

    And matched each with his peer,

  28. أتيتُ البصرة الفيحاء أسعى

    وحبَّكِ سَعْيَ مقدام جسور

    The eye of those notables would be him,

    And the heart in the breasts and bosoms.

  29. أزورُ بها من العلماء شيخاً

    حباه الله بالعِلم الغزير

    Since I took refuge in his eminence,

    I feel I have taken refuge in a lofty mountain.

  30. إلى عَلَمٍ من الأَعلام فردٍ

    تفيض علومه فيض البحور

    Despite the hostile mouths of people

    Who attacked me with rancor and loathing,

  31. لأحمد نخبة الأَنصار يغدو

    مسيري إنْ عزمت على المسير

    When my right hand takes their measure,

    I seize the ultimate honor.

  32. إذا ما عدّدت أعيان قومٍ

    وقابلنا نظيراً بالنَّظير

    I found his company a tender meadow,

    Where he quenched my thirst from the purest nectar.

  33. فعين أُولئك الأَعيان منهم

    وقلب في صدور بني الصُّدور

    To his exemplary spiritual path, my visits,

    And to his frequented retreat, my inner thoughts.

  34. وإنِّي مذ ركنتُ إلى عُلاه

    كأنِّي قد ركنت إلى ثبير

    I resorted to his lofty principles,

    Not to the infamy of a deceitful rogue.

  35. رَغِمْتُ بودّه آناف قوم

    رَمَوْني بالعتوّ وبالنفور

    His face shines with the light of God-consciousness,

    Gleaming brighter than the glowing moon.

  36. إذا أخَذَت بغاربهم يميني

    أخذتُ بغارب الجدّ العثور

    Independent of all mankind, gentle,

    Kind to the weak and the destitute.

  37. رعيت لديه روض العزّ غضًّا

    وأنهلني من العذب النمير

    You see reflected on his face

    What you see on the radiant dawn.

  38. إلى منهاج شرعته ورودي

    وعن مورود نائله صدوري

    He is counted among the foremost in piety,

    Even if you meet him in later times.

  39. ركنت إلى المناجيب الأَعالي

    ولم أركنْ إلى وغدٍ شرير

    Can the shining suns of his ascendance

    Be hidden from the eyes of any witness?

  40. أبار بنور تقوى الله وجهاً

    وقد يزهو على القمر المنير

    So take knowledge from him, for God

    Has granted him famed excellence.

  41. غنيٌّ عن جميعِ الناس عفٌّ

    رؤوفٌ بالضَّعيفِ وبالفقير

    We never attained the like of his eminence,

    An enlightened sage of such insight.

  42. ترى من وجهه ما قد تراه

    على وجه الصَّباح المستنير

    Ask him obscure, intricate questions,

    For you have landed upon the expert.

  43. يُعَدُّ من الأَوائل في تقاه

    وإنْ وافاك بالزَّمن الأَخير

    The people of merit circle him eagerly,

    As the thirsty throng about a pool.

  44. وهل يخفى على أبصار بادٍ

    شموس علاه بادية الظهور

    He never ceased to provide shade for the learned,

    Sheltering them with his protection from the heat.

  45. فخُذْ عنه العلوم فقد حباه

    إله العرش بالفضلِ الشهير

    He satisfies me in place of supporters;

    My ally when supporters desert me.

  46. ولم نظفر بمثل علاه يوماً

    بمطّلع بصير بالأُمور

    He has my utmost affection in sincerity,

    And utmost affection is purity of conscience.

  47. فسل منه الغوامض مشكلاتٍ

    فإنَّك قد سقطت على الخبير

    I will reward his favors with gratitude,

    In a way that satisfies a thankful slave.

  48. تحومُ عليه أهل الفضل طرًّا

    كما حامَ الظماءُ على غدير

    Naturally disposed to noble traits

    And molded with nobility and bounty.

  49. ولم يبرح لأهل العلم ظلاًّ

    يقي بظلاله حرَّ الهجير

    The rhymes shine in praising you

    Like necklaces shining on throats.

  50. ويغنيني عن الأَنصار مولًى

    نصيري حين يخذلني نصيري

    Praise sounds sweet in my verse,

    And my poetry exudes your fragrance.

  51. له محض المودَّة من خلوصي

    ومحض الودّ إخلاص الضَّمير

    Live long, greeting the endless nights,

    And live as long as you live in bliss!

  52. سأجزيه على النعماء شكراً

    بما يرضيه من عبدٍ شكور

  53. لمطبوع على كرم السجايا

    ومجبول على كرم وخِير

  54. زهتْ في حسن مدحتك القوافي

    كما تزهو القلائد في النحور

  55. وطابَ بك الثناء وإنَّ شعري

    تضمَّخَ من ثنائك بالعبير

  56. فدمْ واسلمْ على أبد اللَّيالي

    وعشْ ما دمت حيًّا في سرور
