1. شَجَتْني وقد تُشجي الطلولُ الهوامدُ

    معالمُ أَقْوَتْ بالفضا ومعاهدُ

    She captivated me, though the gazelles captivate the meadows

    Signs have strengthened in the wilderness and covenants

  2. وأَيْسَرُ وَجْدي أنَّني في عراصها

    أُذيبُ عليها القلبَ والقلبُ جامد

    And my anguish is easiest when in her dwelling

    I melt my heart for her while my heart is frigid

  3. وقفتُ بها أستمطرُ العين ماءها

    وأَسأَلُ عن سكَّانها وأُناشد

    I stood at it, drawing tears from my eyes

    And asked about its dwellers, reciting poetry

  4. وما انهلَّ وبل الدَّمع حتَّى تأَجَّجت

    من الوجد نيران الفؤاد الخوامد

    No sooner had the tear flowed and wetted

    Than fires were kindled in my inner heart from passion

  5. فلا ماء هاتيك المدامع ناضب

    ولا حرّ هاتيك الأَضالع خامد

    Neither are those tears depleted

    Nor is that burning in my ribs extinguished

  6. خليليَّ ما لي كلَّما لاحَ بارقٌ

    تنبَّه وَجْدي والعيون هواجد

    My friend, why is it whenever lightning flashes

    My passion stirs and my eyes blaze

  7. وأُوقِدَ هذا الشوقُ تحت أضالعي

    فهل يوقد الشوق المبرّح واقد

    And this yearning is ignited beneath my ribs

    Can ignited passion be extinguished?

  8. فليتَ خيالَ المالكيَّةِ زائري

    فأشكو إليه في الهوى ما أُكابد

    If only the image of my angel would visit me

    So I can complain to her of the love I suffer

  9. وعهدي بربع المالكيَّةِ مَصْرَعٌ

    إذا خَطَرَتْ فيه الحسان الخرائد

    And my pact with the district of the angels is a demise

    When the beautiful wild cows wander there

  10. أَحبَّتنا أمَّا الغرام وحَرُّه

    فباقٍ وأَمَّا الاصطبار فنافد

    Our loved ones, the passion and its heat remain

    While patience is depleted and gone

  11. وإنِّي لفي عصرٍ أضَرَّ بأهلِه

    وأَغْرَبُ شيء فيه خِلٌّ مساعد

    And I am in an era that harmed its people

    And the strangest thing in it is a helpful ally

  12. وما ضرَّني فقدي به ثروة الغنى

    فلا الفضل منحطٌّ ولا النقص صاعد

    What pained me was not losing wealth

    Excellence does not decline, nor disgrace ascend

  13. ترفَّعْتُ عن أشياءَ تُزري بأهْلِها

    وما أنا ممَّن دنَّسَتْهُ المفاسد

    I rose above things that debase those who possess them

    And I am not one dirtied by corruption

  14. وإنِّي لِمَنْ يبغي ودادي لطامعٌ

    وبالمُعرضِ المُزْوَرِّ عنَّي لزاهد

    And I am one whom the greedy desire his affection

    While the pretentious shun me, acting pious

  15. جَريْتُ بميدان التجارب برهةً

    وقد عرَّفتني بالرجال الشدائد

    I raced in the arena of trials for a time

    And tribulations introduced me to men

  16. وما النَّاس إلاَّ ما عَرَفْتُ بكشفها

    صديقٌ مداجٍ أو عدوٌّ معاند

    People are only what their unveiling reveals

    A sincere friend or a hostile enemy

  17. إذا خانكَ الأدنى الَّذي أنت واثقٌ

    به فحريٌّ أنْ تَخونَ الأباعد

    If the lowest you trust betrays you

    It's only fair you betray those further

  18. أعد نظراً في النَّاس إن كنت ناقداً

    فقد يتلافى صحة النقد ناقد

    Reconsider people if you are a critic

    Lest the validity of your critique be critiqued

  19. مضى النَّاس والدنيا وقد آل أمرها

    إلى غير ما تهوى الكرام الأماجد

    The people and world have passed, and their affair

    Has changed from what the generous desire

  20. وأصبَحْتُ في جيل الفساد ولم يكن

    لِيَصْلُحَ هذا الجيل والدهر فاسد

    And I found myself in an era of corruption that

    Cannot be reformed, for time itself is corrupt

  21. فإنْ عُدَّت الآحاد في الجود والتقى

    لقومٍ فعبد الواحد اليوم واحد

    If individuals were counted for generosity and piety

    Today, the singular worshipper would be one

  22. يُعدُّ لإيصال الصِّلات محلُّه

    وتعمر فيه للصّلاة مساجد

    His place is prepared to deliver greetings

    And mosques are populated for prayers

  23. ملابس تقوى الله في البأس دونها

    صدور العوالي والسيوف البوارد

    Garments of piety in adversity beneath them

    Are the chests of glorious men and polished swords

  24. جناب مريع يستمد بمدّه

    وتلقى إلى ذاك الجناب القلائد

    An honorable man who derives strength from his extension

    And to that man come necklaces

  25. يلوح إذا ما لاح بارق جوده

    كما لاح برق في الغمائم راعد

    He shone when his lightning of generosity flashed

    Like lightning flashing in the clouds, thunderous

  26. لقد زرع المعروف في كل موطنٍ

    وزارعه للحمد والشكر حاصد

    He planted goodness in every place

    And its planter, for praise and thanks, reaps

  27. يكاد يقول الشعر لولا جميله

    لما طال لي باعٌ ولا اشتدّ ساعد

    Poetry would nearly speak were it not for his beauty

    Else my talents would not have lengthened nor my efforts intensified

  28. إذا اقترنا شعري وكوكب سعده

    وشوهد منا المشتري وعطارد

    Whenever my poetry and his star of fortune couple

    And the observer beholds us, Mercury appears

  29. تَفَتَّحُ أزهارُ الكلام وأشرقَتْ

    بآفاق أقطار الفخار فراقد

    The flowers of speech blossom and shine

    With prospects radiating the horizons' breadth

  30. أُشاهِدُ في النادي أساير وجهه

    فأنظر أبهى ما أرى وأشاهد

    In the club, I behold the captives of his face

    Looking at the most wondrous of what I see

  31. إذا ما انتمى يوماً لأكرم والدٍ

    فبورك مولودٌ وبورك والد

    Whenever he is attributed to the noblest father

    Blessed is the newborn and blessed the father

  32. بنفسي رفيع القدر عالٍ محله

    تنال الثُّرّيا كفُّه وهو قاعد

    Himself honorable, lofty is his station

    His palms attain the Pleiades while seated

  33. له حيث حلّ الأكرمون من العلى

    مقامٌ كريمٌ في العُلى ومقاعد

    He has, wherever the noblest reside on high

    An honorable abode, its foundations raised

  34. كريم يُنيلُ المستنيلين نَيْلَه

    ومن كرم الأخلاق ما هو رافد

    A generous one who gives seekers his bestowal

    And the most generous morals flow to him

  35. فما خاب في تلك المكارم آملٌ

    ولا سُرَّ في نعمائه قطُّ حاسد

    No hopeful was ever disappointed by those generosities

    Nor did any envier privately delight in his blessings

  36. مناهلُه للظامئين مواردٌ

    فلا نَضِبَتْ في الجود تلك الموارد

    His springs are sources for the thirsty

    Those springs of generosity never run dry

  37. تُشادُ بيوتُ المجد في مكرماته

    وتَرْفَعُ منها ما علاه قواعد

    The houses of glory are built by his generosities

    And the highest of foundations are raised

  38. حَثَثْنا إلى ذاك الجناب قلائصاً

    لها سائق منها إليه وقائد

    We spurred to that side sincere devotions

    With a driver from us to him guiding them

  39. وقد صَدَقتْنا بالذي هو أهْلُه

    ظُنونٌ بما نرجو به وعقائد

    And we were true in what was deserved

    Hopes in what we desire and beliefs

  40. من القوم موصول الجميل بمثله

    لنا صِلَةٌ من راحتيه وعائد

    From those people, goodness is connected to its like

    We have from his tranquility a returning benefit

  41. وما البرّ والإحسان إلاَّ خلائق

    وما الخير في الإنسان إلاَّ عوائد

    Goodness and benevolence are only manners

    And good in man is only habits

  42. تدلّ عليه بالثناء أدِلَّةٌ

    عليها من الفِعل الجميل شواهد

    Evidences attest to him in praise

    Indicators from good deed are its testament

  43. وأبقى له في الصالحات بواقياً

    وإنْ فَنيَ المعروف فالذكر خالد

    And I maintain for him among righteous works a preservation

    Though goodness expires, remembrance is immortal

  44. تروح إليه الآملون وتغتدي

    فذا صادر عنه وذياك وارد

    To him come the hopeful and from him they receive

    For he bestows and they are recipients

  45. ألا بأبي ذاك الهمام الَّذي له

    من الله عونٌ في الأمور وحاشد

    Lo! By the father of that resolute one, who has

    From God support in matters and a defender

  46. تُناخ مطايا المعتفين ببابه

    ويَنْفُقَ سوقُ الفضل والفضل كاسد

    The steeds of those loyal to him are hitched at his door

    And the market of virtue spends while virtue is depressed

  47. إذا أنا أنْشَدْتُ القريض بمدحه

    وَعَتْ أُذُنُ العلياء ما أنا أُناشد

    When I recited eulogy in his praise

    The ears of the eminent heard what I recited

  48. وكم جابتِ الأرضَ البسيطة باسمِهِ

    قوافٍ سوارٍ في الثناء شوارد

    Many times the wide earth was traversed with his name

    Necks adorned with necklaces praising

  49. تُقَلِّدُ جيدَ الدهر منها قلائداً

    ويا ربَّ جيدٍ زيَّنَتْه القلائد

    Adorning the neck of time with necklaces

    By the neck! Adorned with necklaces!

  50. وكم نظمت في عقود مدائح

    مزاياه في تلك العقود فرائد

    And how much have I composed in the meters of eulogies

    His merits as the outstanding qualities in those meters

  51. رعَيْتَ رعاك الله حقَّ رعايتي

    فأفعالُك الغرُّ الجياد محامد

    You have tended, may God tend to you, the right tending of me

    So your actions, the noble steeds, are praised

  52. فَدَعْ غير ما تهوى فإنَّك مفلحٌ

    وخُذْ بالذي تهوى فإنَّك راشد

    So leave what you do not desire, for you will succeed

    And take what you desire, for you are rightly guided

  53. وإنك معروف بكلِّ فضيلةٍ

    وهلْ يجْحَد الشمس المضيئة جاحد

    You are known for every virtue

    Can the shining sun be denied by a denier?

  54. فيا لك في الأماجد من متفضلٍ

    له طارف في الأمجدين وتالد

    O you who are distinguished in glories! A generous one

    Whose brightness shines in both glories and births

  55. بَلَغْنا بك الآمال وهي بعيدة

    وتمّت لنا فيما نروم المقاصد

    Through you we have attained hopes though distant

    And attained in what we seek intents

  56. فكلُّك يا فخر الكرام مكارمٌ

    وكلُّك يا مال العفاة فوائد

    You, pride of the generous, are all nobility

    And you, wealth of the virtuous, are all bounties

  57. شكرتك شكر الروض باكره الحيا

    يد المزن تمريها البروق الرواعد

    I thanked you with the dawn’s first thanks

    As the rain-waterer’s hand passes them, lightning flashes

  58. وها أنا حتَّى ينقضي العمر شاكر

    لنعماك ما بين البرية حامد

    And here I am, thanking your blessings

    For as long as life remains, praising

  59. فلا زلت مقصوداً لكلِّ مُؤَمِّل

    ولا بَرِحَتْ تُتلى عليك القصائد

    Still I am the destination of every hopeful

    And eulogies continue to be recited to you
