هنيئاً لكم هذا الهناءُ المجدَّدُ

ودام لكم هذا السرور المؤبَّدُ

Congratulations on this renewed joy,

May this eternal bliss last for you,

ونِلْتُم به في كلّ يوم مسرَّةً

يجيء بها في مثل يومكم غد

With it you attain every day a happiness,

That comes again on a day like yours tomorrow.

سرورٌ وأفراحٌ وأنسٌ ولذَّةٌ

وأَعيادُ أعمارٍ بكم تتعدَّد

Joy, cheer, companionship and pleasure,

And repeated life celebrations with you,

معاشر قوم ما بهم غير ماجد

ولا فيهم إلاَّ النبيل الممجَّد

Company of people with no one but the glorious,

And none but the noble esteemed amongst them.

إذا وُلدَ المولود منهم لوالدٍ

فللمجد مولودٌ وللمجد يولد

When a newborn is born to their father,

For glory a newborn, and for glory he is born.

وإنْ زوَّجوه كانَ من صلبه الَّذي

تَقَرُّ به عين العلاء وتسعد

And when they marry him, it is from his loins,

With which the eyes of the noble are delighted and blissful.

تَزوَّجَ من كانَ الجميل شعاره

جميل له منه نجار ومحتد

He married one whose banner is beauty,

A beautiful one for him, masterly made.

وذلك جمعٌ لا تفرُّقَ بعده

وشملٌ مدى الأَيَّام لا يتبدَّد

And that is a union never to separate after,

And a bond all the days not to dissipate.

وعيش صفا رغداً كما تشتهونه

فلا شابه في الدَّهر عيش منكَّد

And a life of pure serenity as you wish,

None in time is a troubled life like it.

بأَعراس أيَّام الزَّمان وطيبه

إذا الزهر يسقى والحمام يغرّد

With the weddings on days of time and its prime,

When the flowers are watered and the doves coo.

تبسَّم ثغر الأُقحوان لحسنه

وأَينَعَ للنوَّار حدٌّ مورّد

The lips of the bushes smile at its beauty,

And the meadows bloom to the rivulets abundant.

وصفَّقَتِ الأَوراق من طربٍ به

وراح لها بانُ النقا يتأوَّد

The leaves clap in rapture for it,

With flashes like fires that kindle and subside.

وقد لَبِسَتْ فيه الرِّياض ملابساً

مُدَنَّرة منها لجين وعسجد

The gardens wear in it adorned dresses,

Embroidered with smooth silk and heavy brocade.

تعطّر من هذا الرَّبيع نسائماً

عليهنَّ أنفاسُ المصيف توقَّدُ

It exudes from this spring scented breezes,

On which the breaths of summer are kindled.

سقاها الحيا المنهلّ حتَّى كأَنَّه

لئالئ في أسلاكها تتنضَّد

The rainclouds watered it until it appears

As if pearls line its twigs interlaced.

بمثقلة بالودق خلَّت بروقها

لوامع نيران تشبُّ وتخمد

Laden with berries its lightning bolts

Are flashes of fire that flare up and die down.

يريني ندى عبد الغني قطارها

على الكبد الحرَّى ألذّ وأبرد

The dew of Abdul Ghani shows me its train

On the scorched liver most delicious and cool.

من القوم في مضمار كلِّ أَبِيَّةٍ

أغاروا الفخار المشمخرّ فأَبعدوا

Of the people in every field of glory

They envied the arrogant clay and distanced it.

إذا ما هزَزْناه هزَزْنا مهنَّداً

وهيهات منه المشرفيُّ المهنَّد

When we shake it we shake a trembling one,

Far from it the lofty and shaking one.

وإذ أبعد التشبيه منه فإنَّه

على نائبات الدَّهر سيف مجرَّد

And when the simile is far from it, it is

A sword stripped for the vicissitudes of fate.

ترى جيّد النَّاس الرّديّ بجنبه

وفي النَّاس ما دامت رديٌّ وجيّد

You see the necks of people inferior to it,

And among people there is inferior and superior.

فلا قَدْرَ يدنو قَدْرَه وعلاءه

ولم تَعْلُ في الدُّنيا على يده يد

No worth approaches its worth and height,

And no hand rose above its hand in the world.

له السؤْدد الأَعلى على كلّ سؤدد

وما بعد ذاك الفخر فخر وسؤدد

For it is the highest fortune over all fortunes,

And after that pride, pride and fortunes.

لقد جمع الله المحاسن كلّها

به فهو من بين العوالم مفرد

God gathered all perfections in it,

So it is unique amongst all creations.

تفرَّد من بين الورى بجميله

فما شكّ في توحيده اليوم ملحد

Unique amongst all people in its beauty,

No atheist doubts its oneness today.

وما تجحد الحسَّاد منه فضيلة

وهل تجحد الحسَّاد ما ليس يجحد

Nor do the envious deny any of its virtues,

Do the envious deny what cannot be denied?

تلوذ به بغداد ممَّا يسوؤُها

فمنه لها نعم الدّلاصُ المسرَّد

Baghdad seeks refuge in it from what harms her,

So he is her excellent rescuer, sword drawn.

يقيها سهام النائبات فلم تبل

إذا طاش سهمٌ للخطوب مسدَّد

He protects her from arrows of misfortune, so she is not touched

When a well-aimed arrow for calamities is shot.

حماها ولا حامٍ سواه ولا له

سوى الله في كلّ الأُمور مؤيّد

He protected her while no other protector,

And none but God in all matters supports him.

وقام أبو محمود في كلّ موقف

عليه لواء الحمد يُلوى ويعقد

And Abu Mahmoud stood in every position,

The banner of praise on him twists and knots.

وكم وقعةٍ شبَّت وشبَّ ضرامها

وشابَ لها نصل الظُّبا وهو أَمرد

And how many fights flared up with their sparks flashing,

And the blades of youth shone and he is most valiant.

وقد أنهضَتْه همَّةٌ بلغت به

من المجد ترقى ما تشاء وتصعد

And an ambition raised him that reached with him

From glory however high you climb and ascend.

وقد يطأ الأَهوال بالهمَّة الَّتي

لها موطئٌ هام السّماك ومقعد

And he trampled terrors with the ambition

That has as foothold the high-soaring eagle's nest.

فأَبدى وقد أَخفى أخو الجبن نفسه

ونالَ شجاع القوم ما كانَ يقصد

So he showed while the coward's brother hid himself,

And the brave of people attained what he aimed for.

أسارير ذاك الوجه والوجه عابس

وأبيض ذاك الفعل واليوم أسود

Prisoners of that frowning face, and the day is black,

And white of that deed, and the day is dark.

وأكرومة تحكي وأكرومة عَلَت

يقوم بها هذا الزَّمان ويقعد

Both honorable, telling of glories, both exalted,

With them this time begins and ends.

تسير بها الرّكبان شرقاً ومغرباً

فذا مُتْهِمٌ فيها وآخر منجد

Travellers journey with them east and west,

One being blamed among them, and another praised.

تناقلها عنك الثّقاتُ روايةً

عن المجد عن علياك تُروى وتُسنَد

The trusted ones transmitted them from you,

Stories of glory, stories of your height, narrated and supported.

أرى مُطْلَقَ الأَمداح من حيث أطلقت

بغيرك يا مولاي لا تتقيَّد

I see lavish praise wherever you released it,

None confined my lord, it knows no bounds.

إذا تُليت آثار ذكرك بيننا

نميل كما مالت بنشوان صرخد

When the traces of your mention are recited among us

We lean as the Nu'shan bent with longing.

يذوق بها التَّالي حلاوةَ ذاكرٍ

من الحمد تتلى كلّ آنٍ وتنشد

The reciter tastes through it the sweetness of a rememberer

Of praise recited at all times and chanted.

فيا باسطاً للنَّاس من فضله يداً

لها جملة الأَحرار إذ ذاك أعبد

So O you who extends to people from your bounty a hand,

To which all the free are then most loyal.

فللناس من تلك المناهل منهلٌ

وللناس من تلك الموارد مورد

For people from those springs a spring,

And for people from those meadows a meadow.

لك الجود والإِحسان والفضل كلّه

هو الفضل والمعروف والله يشهد

For you are all generosity, kindness and favor,

It is bounty, grace and God bears witness.

ولست أقول الغيث والغيث مرعد

ولست أقول البحر والبحر مزبد

I do not say rain, and rain is thunderous,

I do not say sea, and the sea surges high.

وما عاقَ دون الجود وعدك نيله

وما لهباتٍ من عطاياك موعد

None deprived of reaching your promise of bounty,

Nor flames from your gifts have a promised time.

كأنِّي بمدحي في علاك منجّم

يبيت لأَجرام السموات يرصد

It is as if in praising your heights I am an astrologer

Who observes for the celestial bodies to chart.

وهل أَكرَه الإِملاقَ أو أَطلب الغنى

ولي منك كنزٌ ولا وربّك ينفد

Do I dislike eloquence or seek wealth,

While for me you are treasure, inexhaustible by your Lord?

فلا زلت مسرور الفؤاد بقرَّةٍ

لعينيك ما دامَ الثناء المخلَّد

So my heart is still blissful in the tranquility

Of your eyes, as long as praise endures.

هما قمرا مجد وإن قلتُ فرقدا

سماءٍ فكلٌّ منهما هو فرقد

Two moons of glory, and if I say they slumbered,

A sky, and each of them is a planet.

تزوَّج زاكي العنصرين بكفوه

وتمَّ بحمْد الله ما كنت تقصد

Zaki married the best of the two potentials,

And by God's praise fulfilled what you intended.

أَقولُ له لمَّا تزوَّج بالهنا

بملءِ فم الأَقلام حين تردد

I say to him when he married joyfully

With the pens' nibs flowing as they echo:

تزوَّجتَ فلتهنا هناءً مؤَرَّخاً

وقد سَرَّنا هذا الزَّواج محمّد

You married, may you be congratulated a dated congratulation,

And we are gladdened by this marriage, Mohammed.
