1. قَلبٌ يَذوبُ ومهجةٌ تَتَقطَّع

    وجوًى يهيجُ به الفؤاد المولَعُ

    A melting heart and a soul torn asunder

    My innermost being aflame with fervent ardor

  2. لي بعد مَن سكن الغضا نار الغضا

    تطوى على الزفرات منها الأضلع

    For one who dwells in the tender bosom of Ghada is a scorching fire

    My ribs curl round sighs that escape

  3. ما زِلتُ تُصْبيني الصّبا بهبوبها

    سَحراً وتبكيني البروق اللُّمَّعُ

    The morning breeze still casts its spell on me

    Bewitching me, the glittering lightnings dazzle

  4. وتهيجني الورقاء ما إنْ أصْبَحَتْ

    تشدو على فنن الأراك وتسجع

    The meadows stir me when at dawn

    Chanting melodies of gazelles, blending rhymes

  5. تُملي عليَّ حديث فرط شجونها

    في الشجوِ وفي صُحفِ الغرام فأطمعُ

    Reciting to me tales of overflowing passions

    In love songs and scrolls of desire I revel

  6. وقضى ادِّكار الظاعنين بأنَّه

    لا يستقرُّ لمستهامٍ مضجعُ

    And the vows of lovers decree

    No rest for one impassioned, no repose

  7. أرأيتَ أنَّ المزمعين على النوى

    عزَموا على أخذ القلوب وأزمعوا

    Have you not seen those bent on visiting

    Are resolved to steal hearts and have in mind to roam

  8. لو كنتَ يومَ البين حاضرَ لوعتي

    لرأيت كيف تصوب تلك الأدمعُ

    Had you been there the day we parted

    You'd have known how those tears then poured

  9. أشكو إليك وأنت أبصر بالهوى

    ما أودعوا يا سعد ساعة ودّعوا

    To you I complain, most knowing of passion's throes

    What they confided at that moment of farewell

  10. هم أهرقوا دمعي المصونَ وأوقدوا

    في القلب غُلَّةَ وامقٍ لا تنقعُ

    They shed my treasured tears and lit

    Within my heart a blaze of parted love that will not quench

  11. ولقد رعيتُ لهم هناك وما رَعوا

    وحَفِظْتُ وُدَّهم القديم وضيَّعوا

    I guarded their affection of old which they forsook

    Kept safe their olden love which they let waste

  12. وأخذت أذكرهم وبينَ جوانحي

    كبدٌ تكادُ لما بها تتصدَّعُ

    Thinking of them while in my breast

    A heart so pained it nearly ruptures

  13. حُيِّيت يا دار الأحبَّة في اللوى

    بحياً يصوبك في العشيِّ ويقلعُ

    Greetings O dwellings of the beloved in fervent love

    With greetings that at nightfall and dawn repeat

  14. حتَّى يراقَ على ثراك فترتوي

    بعد الظما تلك الطلول الخشع

    Until upon your ruins the showers rain

    Quenching after thirst those humble ruins

  15. كانت منازلنا تروقُ بأوجهٍ

    غَرَبَتْ فأينَ تقول منها المطلعُ

    Our homes once graced with faces

    Now strange - where does the rising sun now gleam?

  16. يا عهدنا الماضي وليسَ براجعٍ

    أفترجعنَّ بما مضيت فترجعُ

    O bygone days that will not come again

    Can you not return as once you were?

  17. واهاً لعيشك يا نديم بمثلها

    والكأسُ من حدق الأوانس تترعُ

    Alas, your life's companion is now bereft

    The cup from the lovely maidens' hands he sips no more

  18. حيث الصبا غضٌّ وأعلاق الهوى

    ممَّا تُغَرُّ بها الملاح وتخدعُ

    Where youth was fresh, the bonds of love

    Seducing to the sailor, offering all as ruse

  19. نجد الهوى رطْبَ المَجَسِّ فواصلٌ

    لا ينثني وملايمٌ ومُمَنَّعُ

    In Nejd we found tender love, companions

    Staunch, not easily swayed and great restraint

  20. ونروض باللّذّات كلَّ أبيَّةٍ

    منها لنا فيها القياد الأطوعُ

    We tamed each wild gazelle

    Leading them gently, docile in our hands

  21. نكصَتْ على أعقابها أسرابها

    وخلا من الظبيات ذاك المربعُ

    Their herds have turned back on their heels

    Leaving the meadows empty of livestock

  22. ويحَ المتيّم من فراقِ أحبَّةٍ

    عفَتِ المنازلُ بعدهم والأربعُ

    The lovesick man is sundered from his loved ones

    Bereft, the dwellings and grounds since they went

  23. يتجرَّع المرَّ الزعاف وإنَّما

    كأس الصدود أقلُّ ما تتجرع

    He tastes the bitter agonies yet if only

    He'd hear the love songs, he might find comfort

  24. ولربما احتمل السلوَّ لوَ انَّه

    يصغي إلى قول العذول ويسمع

    In the dwellings where I oft would halt and rest

    Is a place for one who suffered love's cruel blow

  25. لي في المنازل حيثُ رامة وقفةٌ

    فيها لمن عانى الصبابة مصرعُ

    My loved ones camp at Zarud, perhaps

    The clouds rained upon Zarud and Alelak

  26. إنَّ الأحبَّةَ في زرود ولعلعٍ

    سُقي الغمامَ بهم زرودُ ولَعْلَعُ

    The imprints called at dawn, so they set forth

    To meet them, hastening with great speed

  27. هتفَ النوى بهم ضحًى فتبادروا

    فيه إلى تلف المشوق وأسرعوا

    O can you see them gathering, o can you see

    Fortune yield to people what it denies?

  28. يا هَلْ تراهم يألفون وهل ترى

    يَهَبُ الزمان لأهله ما ينزع

    For them the imprints always yearn

    A heart aflame, eyes weeping

  29. يشتاقهم أبداً على شحط النوى

    قلبٌ به حُرَقٌ وعينٌ تدمعُ

    I seek to heal with their sweet company

    Or else this aching heart may find relief

  30. أنفكُّ أستشفي بطيب حديثهم

    أو يشتفي هذا الفؤاد المُوجعُ

    Ask not how I fare, for I'm

    A hide, no longer soft, made rough through time

  31. لا تسألنِّي كيف أنتَ فإنَّني

    جَلدٌ على الأيام لا أتضعضعُ

    The vile opportunists slapped my cheek

    Evil itself slaps opportunity to make it cower

  32. صفعتْ قذال المطمعات أبوَّتي

    وقفا الدنيَّةِ بالأُبوَّة يُصفعُ

    From my noble father a noble scion I remain

    Called to sublime glory, I pursue

  33. أنا من جميل أبي جميل لم أزلْ

    أُدعى إلى المجد الأثيل فأتبع

    Through him, the varieties of generosity overflowed

    Diverse yet of a kindred kind, diverse

  34. عنه المكارم في الوجود تنوعت

    أجناسها والجنس قد يتنوّع

    His gifts surpass all others, though he

    For God, or God's cause, brings all gains together

  35. أفْنَتْ عطاياه الحطامَ وإنَّه

    لله أو لسبيله ما يَجْمَعُ

    Without him, kindness would remain unknown

    Nor for merit any garden flourish or be kept

  36. لولاه ما عرف الجميل ولا زها

    في غيره للفضل روضٌ ممرعُ

    Exalted in a beauty that brings greatest joy

    Of those the highest index fingers point

  37. متهلّلٌ بجمال أبهج طلعةٍ

    ممَّن تشير إلى علاهُ الإصبعُ

    From him benefits are sought, though he

    Attains the heights by harming or benefiting both

  38. ترجى المنافع من لَدُنه وإنَّما

    نالَ المعالي من يضرّ وينفعُ

    Where are his enemies when he attacks?

    He, no doubt, more bold than all his enemies

  39. أينَ الضياغمُ من علاه إذا سطا

    هو لا مراء من الضياغم أشجعُ

    In positions souls cower from evil

    While the resolute prostrate and swords bow down

  40. في موقف ترد النفوس من الردى

    والهامُ تسجدُ والصوارمُ تركعُ

    The free spirit exults where the hunting

    Is sated and the lances of warriors fed

  41. والحرّ يطرب حيث صادية الظبا

    تروى وساغبة القشاعم تشبع

    Merciful to all yet firm and strict

    Taming the wild affairs till they submit

  42. ذو رأفة في العالمين وشدَّةٍ

    تومي لعاتية الأُمور فتخضعُ

    He severs hopes from those who hoped

    And so the polished sword severs all

  43. قطعت أراجيف الرجاء لأهلها

    وكذلك العضب المهنَّد يقطعُ

    Your worth, if weighed against all souls

    Would then outweigh them, and your value loftier

  44. لله درّك لو وزنت بك الورى

    لرجحت حينئذٍ وقدرك أرفعُ

    O you whom praise an obligation made

    And whose praise is duty and volunteer

  45. يا من رأيت به المديح فريضة

    ومن المدايح واجب وتطوّع

    If you're pleased, then what need of precious gift?

    If wrathful, then what use is sword or spear?

  46. فإذا رضيت فما الشهاد المجتنى

    وإذا غضبت فما السمام المنقع

    Thanks for your gift of glorious feats to me

    Where generosity and the highest place reside

  47. شكراً لسالفة الصنايع منك لي

    حيث المكارم والمكان الأَرفعُ

    You granted me favors, which to thank

    I am eloquent, though stutterers speak

  48. بلَّغتني نعماً خطبت بشكرها

    فأنا البليغ إذا خطبت المصقعُ

    And I broadcast, despite my sins, my poems

    Where pleasing praise of you illuminates

  49. ونشرتُ بعد الطيّ فيك قصائدي

    طيب الثناء عليك فيها يسطعُ

    Without your generous praise, none would

    Listen, or a listening ear incline

  50. لولا مدايحك الكريمة لم تكن

    تصغي له أذنٌ ويطرب مسمعُ

    I confounded my enviers with your gift

    Which humbles the proud and makes them kneel

  51. أكبتّ حسَّادي بنعمتك التي

    أمستْ تذلّ لها الخطوب وتخضع

    Can the days' events ever touch me

    While your victorious side protects?

  52. أتنالني أيدي الزمان بحادثٍ

    يوماً وجانبك الأغرّ الأمنع

    I swear by the One who raised the sky, now the

    Stars' flowers long to praise you in their verse

  53. قسماً بمن رفع السماء فأصبحت

    زهر النجوم بنظم مدحك تطمع

    That patronage, leadership, and heights

    Apart from you, their sun cannot emerge

  54. إنَّ الأُبوَّة والرياسة والعُلى

    من غير وجهك شمسها لا تطلعُ

    Each day, from your eminence, a feat

    For which you merit thanks, and you create

  55. في كلِّ يومٍ من علاك صنيعة

    أنت المجيد لها وأنت المبدعُ

    While other great ones, if called, are deaf

    To goodly deeds, if they are asked

  56. والناس إلاَّ أنت في كبّارها

    صمٌّ عن الفعل الجميل إذا دُعوا

    By God, you are peerless among your people

    And you, none but you we seek and call

  57. تالله إنَّك واحدٌ في أهلها

    ولأنت أنت المشتكى والمفْزَعُ

    No needy man has failed to gain plenty

    And to your bounty the straightest road leads

  58. ما ضلَّ عن نيل الغِنى ذو حاجة

    وإلى مكارمك الطريق المهيعُ

    We hope for your help and dread your vengeance

    For mighty is your power and greater your grace

  59. ترجو نَداك وتتَّقي منك العِدى

    فالبأس بأسُكَ والسَّماحة أجمعُ

    You give and you withhold, disappointing

    None but you can give and disappoint both

  60. تعطي وتمنع نائلاً وأبوَّة

    لا كانَ من يعطي سواك ويمنعُ

    God knows and all the world bears witness

    I hope for none but you and none expect

  61. الله يعلم والعوالم كلُّها

    إنِّي لغيرِ نَداك لا أتوقعُ

    From the sea of your kindness a sweet

    And freshwater spring flows, constant, never failing

  62. لا زالَ لي من بحرِ جودك مورد

    عذب ووبل سحابة لا تقلعُ

    If I aspire, in your kindness lies my hope

    If content, in your kindness lies my contentment

  63. فلئن طمعتُ فلي بجودك مطمعٌ

    ولئن قنعتُ فلي بجودك مقنعُ
