1. I say to her, on the day she earnestly bore us away,

when glory had ordained her departure:

  2. Toward the place for which noble souls yearn,

there, through honor, to attain all they seek.

  3. If you carry me past the three reaches of al-Ghuwayr

and traverse those abodes and their ruins,

  4. I shall give you, O she-camel, water from its springs

and say, “Drink deeply today of its flowing abundance.”

  5. And I shall let you breathe the breeze from Hājir,

trailing its skirts over the fragrant myrtle.

  6. Hudhaym saw her—as though passion

were rending her limbs with yearning.

  7. Whenever she recalled her days at al-Liwā,

    remembrance stirred her heart’s turmoil.

  8. She hopes for a pause at Dhū al-Ghaḍā,

    but separation denies her hopes.

  9. He spoke of her—for love is madness,

and how many like her has longing destroyed!

  10. Had she endured being away from the homeland’s dwellings,

then patience would have served her better.

  11. But will a soul, deeply enamored

of the one she loves, heed her reproachers?

  12. By the signs of love I knew what ailed her,

while you kept asking us, “What is wrong with her?”

  13. She spoke—and her very state, O Hudhaym,

is a tongue interpreting all her words:

  14. “For a time I delighted in those faces,

and after they were gone, I suffered terrors.

  15. You have held back within your eyes these tears

that you long, O she-camel, to release.

  16. Come, let us summon fresh weeping,

for sorrow has laden the eye with its burdens.”
